To roll my eyes at these gifts

Birthday was recently and a relative bought me Star Wars oven gloves and dish clothes, as they know I love Star Wars. DPs birthday was in October and he was bought lovely t-shirts by the same relative.

Is it just me who thinks that handing someone kitchen gear as a gift is a little shitty? It's not just for the birthday girl, it's for everyone in the house 🙄

@Luredbyapomegranate

I think they probably thought -ooh Star Wars! And got excited and nabbed them.

TBH if I were a SW fan I’d rather have kitchen gear as I like a jolly tee towel, and think anyone over the age of 13 wearing a themed t shirt should be SHOT. We all have our foibles..Smile

Foibles is a new word for me! I love it ☺

Maybe they thought as a female that you might be a bit choosey about clothing/t shirts but thought they nailed it with something you are interested in.
Unless their is a bitchy signal (like an op's mil on another thread with a cushion with a nasty ha ha comment on weight picture on a cushion) I would appreciate the (misplaced) thought in trying to please you & just be kind.

Loveatortie · 20/02/2022 21:31

Can you ask them where they got them, would be a perfect present for my sister.

Emilyaparis · 20/02/2022 21:31

This is fair, thank you

That would kind of go against the point of my thread, wouldn't it? 😅

Another irritating thread where everyone blatantly ignores that OP has said she is not interested in kitchen stuff.

Or you could just google it, like the whole wide world.

It never fails to surprise me the amount of people who are sniffy about gifts and decide if they are good enough, and don’t jist appreciate that someone made the effort.

My sister in law travelled internationally my hubby got a Swiss Army knife and I got fucking lace doilies-like a coaster for lamps on tables-I was 22 years old not a spinster aunt and it was insulting. Everyone else got really nice, expensive gifts-housewares aren't good gifts unless you ask specifically for them in my opinion

BoredZelda · 20/02/2022 21:55

I bought my husband a robot hoover for his Christmas a few years back. One year I bought him a foreman grill. Can’t see what the problem is.

FireMeetGasoline · 20/02/2022 21:56

I think it's better than receiving nothing at all. They might not remember your conversation fully, or just they've just taken snippets from that convo - you like Star Wars and I'm pretty sure she said something about the kitchen, for example.

At the end of the day, they've put some thought into it, albeit thet got it wrong. Just be grateful that they've put some thought into it. Some people, more so children don't have that, and for that reason I'm saying YABU. Happy birthday btw. I'm a winter birthday, and I f 🤬🤬king hate it. My bff and I hav a summer party.

HomeHomeInTheRange · 20/02/2022 22:00

They saw Star Wars rather than ‘kitchen goods’, probably as a rare item.

Had they been generic striped cloths etc, then that’s terrible.

Thedogscollar · 20/02/2022 22:02

YANBU I hate Star WarsGrin
Seriously tho completely see your point as it's not a gift just for you and you alone.

@sadpapercourtesan what a nasty post. I’ve reported you.

curlii103 · 20/02/2022 22:13

T shirts are an easy option. Id have to go out of my way to find starwars oven gloves so i tjink yabu and i doubt its sexist if thats what youre getting at

Maybe they misremembered your conversation and thought you really like kitchen stuff as q gift?

MummyInTheNecropolis · 20/02/2022 22:16

OP you obviously love cooking and are a keen baker, I don’t know why you keep trying to deny it. They bought the perfect gift for a kitchenware lover such as yourself.

BlaBlaFishcakes · 20/02/2022 22:16

*Last summer I had a conversation with this some person and it happened to come into conversation that I would never buy a woman kitchen stuff because I think it's a little sexist, not to mention it's a household gift, so not really a gift for the person at all.

They completely agreed with me, and then bought me kitchen stuff 😅*
Is it possible it was a jokey reference to the conversation between you? So maybe clumsy, but meant to be taken with humour rather than as a hint that you should spend more time in the kitchen?

SaySomethingMan · 20/02/2022 22:18

Yanbu OP. I see where you’re coming from.

sellingupslow · 20/02/2022 22:24

OP, I got a frying pan for mine today Grin
