To ask if you smoke cigarettes?

I'm an ex smoker. Been 20 years. Get a craving now and then but wondered how many people still smoke?

So, do you smoke?
If yes, how many?
Why don't you stop?

Mabelface · 14/02/2022 22:54

Yes
Too many
Not the right time for me right now

miki14 · 14/02/2022 22:58

A few a week. Stupid.. but.. still something about it..

Phormiumjester · 14/02/2022 22:59

I stopped a few years ago. I never tried before because I think I thought it would be harder than it actually was!
I was about 5 a day though. Not tons.

1Week · 14/02/2022 23:00

I vape now.

monroeagogo · 14/02/2022 23:03

@1Week

I vape now.

Do you find that's better?

I'm tempted to vape but worried I'll start smoking again

I know MN hates smokers - today is my “quit day”. I smoked from the age of 21, and am 48 now. I have a vape, and am enrolled on a smoking cessation programme for 12 weeks with patches.

Kitkat151 · 14/02/2022 23:06

I stopped 31 years ago (first pregnancy)

Bigbus · 14/02/2022 23:08

I smoked for many years. Stopped when pregnant then started again three times! It felt like it was part of who I was and every time I quit it was horrendous. I eventually quit for good 9 years ago after a specific difficult experience and I can honestly say, although I don’t regret smoking when I did (met lots of interesting people in the smoking areas!) I’m so glad I don’t smoke now. When I remember how much of a slave I was to it - I even found it hard to sit through a movie in the cinema - I’m so glad it doesn’t have that hold over me anymore. I went cold turkey but some of my friends who were the most unlikely to give up did it by vaping and it really worked. Good luck op!

MaryAndHerNet · 14/02/2022 23:08

I smoked from a teenager up to 35 or so.
It's been 7 years now. I actually hate it now, the smell on people, the smoke clouds in the street, the fag ends everywhere etc.
I'd ban it. But I'm a miserable bugger.

Thisbastardcomputer · 14/02/2022 23:08

I would still be smoking if menthols were still on sale, I vape now but my cough is greatly improved.

I can only tackle one normal fag, so I'm not tempted to buy a packet

Hard to say.
I started vaping years ago - it was amazing, I never looked back. I had only managed to give up for pregnancies and being before - once that ended I was right back into it. Vaping made giving up fun,if you believe it, I liked trying out the different flavours, and it felt guilt free.

But now I'm just as hooked on the vape, and am nowhere near giving that up. At least its not as unhealthy in many ways, and you can pop out at work for a few mins without smelling when you come in.

EmmaMaya · 14/02/2022 23:14

Dont/never have!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/02/2022 23:15

I'm tempted to vape but worried I'll start smoking again

I thought the same myself - only got a vape because I was going on a ship where smoking was disallowed, and it was "just going to be for the 10 days"

I've never touched another cigarette since Smile

1Week · 14/02/2022 23:17

Me too puzzledandpissedoff

No, I tell a lie, I smoked at a friend's wedding after a few drinks, but that didn't send me back, went back on the vape the next day and never missed it

cuno · 14/02/2022 23:19

I don't smoke now, but I started smoking when I was 19 and I tried to quit numerous times but it never fully worked. I got a vape and then I ended up vaping way more than I was smoking, and fell back into smoking anyway when I forgot my vape/ran out of battery etc. Ended up smoking and vaping, it was ridiculous. I straight away quit when I found out I was pregnant when I was 25, haven't looked back since, not touched a single cigarette nor my vape wherever that thing is (probably lost it in a house move). Don't even feel tempted when I see colleagues/friends smoke.

Ponoka7 · 14/02/2022 23:22

My eldest can smoke anything between 15-40. She doesn't stop because she enjoys smoking, my Mother was the same. My middle DD smokes around 12 a day. She doesn't stop because of anxiety. I've never smoked and neither has my youngest.

Lovemydoggie · 14/02/2022 23:23

Yes I am a smoker..not every day though.

ComtesseDeSpair · 14/02/2022 23:26

I smoked socially as a teenager and student and a couple of years thereafter. I’m now 35 and I still get the occasional craving and will have a cigarette three or four times a year if the circumstances are right: outdoors, a view, with friends, a special occasion.

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 14/02/2022 23:27

I’ve never smoked. I’m in my 20s and only know one person below the age of 40 who smokes! It’s viewed as gross in my circle and vaping is lame/middle aged.

houseonthehill · 14/02/2022 23:29

Yes.
About 15 lovely Drum rollies with licorice paper.
I am a contented smoker.

Want2beme · 14/02/2022 23:32

Today, I saw 2 teenagers in school uniform vaping Grin. Have seen quite a few young ones vaping.

I've never smoked.

Elieza · 14/02/2022 23:58

I don’t.

My mum smoked for over 50 years and stopped because she could no longer afford her ‘hobby’ so she switched over to vaping. Coughed like hell for three days before acclimatising to it. Now she enjoys her wee vape as much as she enjoyed her wee ciggies.

It’s ramped up during lockdowns though, so now she has a full on smokers cough and smokers tickle again, and always bunged up with catarrh.

It’s so much cheaper she overdoes it because she likes it and it’s her way of relieving stress. Only the constant blowing of the nose and coughing must be tiring.

blyn72 · 15/02/2022 00:03

I gave up years ago but have had the odd lapse, not much though. I've been a lot better since giving up, used to be prone to chest infections and not now. Well done you!

Awrite · 15/02/2022 00:08

I have up 17 years ago. Just woke myself up by dreaming I was smoking a cigarette out my back door. Weird.

RightOnTheEdge · 15/02/2022 00:12

I've never smoked and I'm so grateful I never started.
