Maths Disagreement

One person thinks the answer is 165 and the other thinks 67, who is right?

YABU - 165
YANBU - 67

Or what’s the answer if both are wrong?

@GettingStuffed

Unfortunately there's two types of maths. The stuff we did in schools years ago when you worked left to right unless there were brackets, this new maths means to do things in a particular order.

Who decided this way was better? So it's possible to be two "correct" answers depending on when you went to school.

I am sorry that you were taught badly. Working left to right is wrong, it hasn’t changed, you were just taught the wrong thing.

Like if someone came on and said they were taught that 2+2=5, and when did that change?? It didn’t, they were just taught incorrectly.

TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits · 04/02/2022 19:36

Definitely 67.

TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits · 04/02/2022 19:38

@TheNinny

Both wrong. It’s 38.

Last row row is 2 + 3 + (3(5+6))
2 + 3 + 3(11)
2 + 3 + 33 = 38

Bananas have 3 on them, not 4 like other rows.
Pentagon shape thing is missing a square on only 15 in others if you add the sides of the shapes inside (hex,pent, square =15). On bottom is only hex+ pent =11.

Then the rules of bodmass means the multiple trumps the addition so do that first

Although if this is the case, then I've not a clue.

Didn't realise you had to look at the minute details - what is it, a bloody Mensa puzzle?

@TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits

Definitely 67.
The answer to the problem in the picture is 38. The answer to the OP's second post with the wrong numbers is 67.

Yes to BIDMAS as well as BODMAS, as the I refers to indices.

However there is some discourse about BIDMAS/BODMAS/PEDMAS, as this pithy article explains.

Time to ditch BODMASS

Oh crap got all smug didn't notice the clock. 35?

The 3 pentagram/square shapes are 15, so two are 10.
4 bananas are 4 so 3 bananas are 3.
The clock is 3 , but showing two oclock would be 2?

2+3 + 3x10= 35?

bongobingo43 · 04/02/2022 20:13

3+4+4x15 = 165

ElCaMum · 04/02/2022 20:13

The grey shape is worth 11
Bananas 3
Clock 2

All the images change subtlety for the last equation.
Multiply before addition.
So 11x3=33
33+3+2=38

Why is everyone talking about BODMAS when there are no brackets. You add the first 3 numbers together then multiply that answer by the final number

FirstTimeSecondTime · 04/02/2022 20:16

The answer is 38

2+3+(3x11)=38

Porkchopexpress · 04/02/2022 20:16

It's 35

Porkchopexpress · 04/02/2022 20:18

Scratch that..its 38

Doesn't need to be brackets as × and ÷ still take priority over + and - so you do the × first

@bongobingo43

No. That's exactly the point.
Bodmas.
Brackets first. If no brackets then move onto order (like 2 squared). If no squaring then move onto division. If no division then move onto multiplication. If no multiplication then move onto addition. If not addition then move onto subtraction.

The sum is
2 + 3 + 3 × 11

No brackets or squaring. So next check for multiplication. There is one! Do that first to give,

2 + 3 + 33.

Next, check for addition. We have two. Do those. That gives,

If the sum was,
(2 + 3 + 3) × 11

Then we would add the first 3 numbers right at the start because brackets come first.

So, it is the exact opposite of what you said. With no brackets, you go right to the end and do the multiplication first.

jimmyreckon · 04/02/2022 20:23

But it's not new @GettingStuffed we learnt it in the 80s and Ddad said he learnt it in the 50s

You don't need brackets for Bodmas

In the order or working , multiplication is always done Before addition or subtraction

BODMAS/ BIDMAS is taught in year 6, I'm pretty certain that it hasn't just been invented for SATs!
