Maths Disagreement

One person thinks the answer is 165 and the other thinks 67, who is right?

YABU - 165
YANBU - 67

Or what’s the answer if both are wrong?

188 I get.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 15:39

@knittingaddict

165
How? It isnt possible.
UniversalAunt · 04/02/2022 15:39

BODMAS - specifically the order of multiply (M) before addition (A).

Hour hand on clock gives value = 2 o’clock
Banana is 1, so 3 bananas = 3
Sum sides of the two polygons (5+6) = 11.

2+3+(3*11)= 38.

knittingaddict · 04/02/2022 15:39

Ignore me. Just seen the difference in shape. I've been caught by these before. On mn I think

KitchenTowel · 04/02/2022 15:40

If we assume that all the clocks are the same value and the grey thingies are the same value as well then it's 67. Multiplication takes precedence over addition.

So it's 3+4+(4×15)=67

DustyMaiden · 04/02/2022 15:40

This is an eye test

knittingaddict · 04/02/2022 15:42

88

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 04/02/2022 15:44

38

Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 15:46

@knittingaddict

88
Nope. Not possible.

Multiplication comes before addition. You times the two numbers first, then add the other 2 to that. You dont add all 3 and then times that number.

Multiplcation then addition.

Winchestercollege · 04/02/2022 15:46

Now I realise. 38

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 04/02/2022 15:48

Shapes count the corners. Top row 15, bottom 11.
Count the bananas, bottom row 3, above rows 4
Clock value on the bottom row 2 not 3 as above (as per hour figure)

BODMAS
11 corners x 3 bananas =33
Plus 2 on clock
Plus 3 bananas
Equals 38

knittingaddict · 04/02/2022 15:49

Only because husband (maths degree) has just explained it to me. Can't understand why you don't just use brackets, but never pretended to understand the maths mind.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 15:50

@knittingaddict

Only because your husband told you?

A thread full of (probably) women have explained why it is 38. But you had to ask your husband?

ShakespearesSisters · 04/02/2022 15:51

I'm going 50. On the last shape in the final sum there us only 11 lines, not 15 as in the shapes on top row. Also the clock is at 2 not 3 as in the other examples. So with BODMAS which I have learnt is a thing (I really remember just working right to left unless in brackets) it would be 11x4 then add on bananas (4) and clock (2). 44+4+2=50

mam0918 · 04/02/2022 15:52

answers 88 in my head

2 + 3 + 3 x 11

2 o'clock + 3 bananas + 3 bananas x 11 edges on the shapes

Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 15:52

@ShakespearesSisters

Change your 4s to 3s.
There are only 3 bananas in each bunch on the last line.

ShakespearesSisters · 04/02/2022 15:53

Ok. Ignore that. I've just magnified the screen. Only 3 bananas in the bottom row. So 33+3+2=38

dannydyerismydad · 04/02/2022 15:53

I get 38. But you need to properly zoom in to see the differences. It's more a test of observation than maths.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 15:55

@mam0918

I'm done with this thread so for the last time, you multiply before you add.

You dont multiply the whole lot. You only multiply those 2 numbers then add on the rest.

11 times 3 is 33.
Then add on 3 and 3. That's 38. Not 88.

To get 88, it would need to be
(2 + 3 + 3) × 11.
Then you would add them all and times the answer by 11.

Without brackets, it is
2 + 3 + 3 × 11.

You do 3 times 11 first.

userusing · 04/02/2022 15:55

I get 35

3 shapes in each of the first (so 5 each) to make each full shape worth 15

Then 4 bananas =4 (so each banana 1)

Then the clock is pointing at 3 on the second line and equates to 3 but 2 on the bottom line so assuming it equates to 2

Then the bottom line is
2+3+3x10
Do 3x10 first (from BODMAS) =30
Then 30+2+3 =35

Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/02/2022 15:55

*add on 3 and 2

wordler · 04/02/2022 15:56

It's 38

2+3+(3x11)

In the final sum: clock is pointing to 2 rather than 3, there are 3 bananas rather than 4, and 11 sides in the shape rather than 15

Then you have the order of mathematical operations - multiplication before addition

Why the aggression? Why are focusing on me? Got an issue you would like to discuss?

Because I wasn't reading the other responses on purpose and my husband is right next to me in the car and it was something to talk about. Is that OK with you?

Sixgeese · 04/02/2022 15:59

I made it 38....now I am going to look to see if anyone agrees with me.

NaiceLeftie · 04/02/2022 16:00

@DustyMaiden

This is an eye test
It totally is Smile

The answer is 38.
Brackets
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction
Is the order you do the last bit in.
