Does a bed need a headboard?

I want a new bed, we have just moved house and our bed is massive and chunky.
I've found a great bed for not much money but it has no headboard.
I think it would be fine, husband thinks it's weird to not have a headboard.
I can't add voting as I'm on mobile but AIBU or is he?

Only one of the beds in my house has a headboard and that's because it came with one. I've never had one on my bed.

ThePants999 · 30/01/2022 13:35

No headboards on our beds.

SilverHairedCat · 30/01/2022 13:35

We had no headboard for a bit. Hated it. If you sit up and read etc, I find the mattress slides down the bedstead...! Headboard also just like more finished. Without it, it looks like my old student digs IMO.

Lots of people don't use a headboard. You could try it out and always get one later if you decide you prefer having one.

AuntyClem · 30/01/2022 13:38

No, but the head needs to be against a wall or the pillows will fall off.

gobbledygoook · 30/01/2022 13:38

I've always had headboards - I didn't realise people didn't?! I think it just makes the bed look more complete in a strange way, I can't imagine sitting it bed with pillows against the wall. I must have had a sheltered life 😂

My husband thinks it would look like student digs!!

We had no headboard for about thirteen years. Don't try to sit relaxing in bed.

If it's solely because of the look of the thing, you could try painting one on the wall.

Does the bed have things to fix a headboard to? The divan we originally bought when we were scrimping has a headboard now: it's quite straightforward to buy one separately.

This is the bed I'm looking at. It needs to be low to the ground

Nooo you need a headboard. I love mine, imagine if you wanted to sit up and read or watch tv - you'd have to lean against the cold wall. Also in terms of looks, no headboard just looks weird to me and reminds me of student accom with crap beds.

MrsKDB · 30/01/2022 13:41

I think a bed needs a headboard.

YellowMonday · 30/01/2022 13:42

I have a painted on the wall headboard. Love it.

Thelnebriati · 30/01/2022 13:43

It doesnt look like its got the fixtures you need to be able to attach a headboard. Its also got struts on the floor, so you wouldnt be able to slide bags or boxes out from under the bed. I'd look for a different bed.

Oblomov22 · 30/01/2022 13:45

It looks like the kind of bed that can't have a headboard fitted. I have always had a headboard. I would never be without one. I don't like beds without headboards, I think they look unfinished. and I agree with your husband they look like student digs.

Peridot1 · 30/01/2022 13:46

I hate no headboard. Think it looks unfinished. And I like to read in bed so like to be able to prop myself up against it.

alwaysscared · 30/01/2022 13:47

Mixed answers. Hmmm, maybe I'll look for a different bed!

Our headboard attaches to the wall.

TempName01 · 30/01/2022 13:48

I made my own headboard from a piece of mdf, ordered a cheap piece of foam off the internet and staple gunned some fabric around. Why don’t you buy the bed and see how you get on with it, then you can always add a headboard at a later date.

woodhill · 30/01/2022 13:48

Like a headboard personally

onedayoranother · 30/01/2022 13:49

I like a headboard. It's something to rest up against when sitting in bed, and it makes the room look more complete.

grapewine · 30/01/2022 13:50

I agree that it looks unfinished. Tried both.

Clarinet1 · 30/01/2022 13:51

With no headboard you would tend to find that the wall gets grubby from hair rubbing it etc over time.

Also this...
womaninatightspot · 30/01/2022 14:25

I work in a hotel, all our headboards are attached to the wall not to the bed which is standard in the industry. Just google wall mounted headboard.

Darbs76 · 30/01/2022 14:26

I always want a headboard, I sit up in bed most of the evening
