Does a bed need a headboard?

alwaysscared · 30/01/2022 13:33

I want a new bed, we have just moved house and our bed is massive and chunky.
I've found a great bed for not much money but it has no headboard.
I think it would be fine, husband thinks it's weird to not have a headboard.
I can't add voting as I'm on mobile but AIBU or is he?

A bed doesn't NEED a headboard per se, but it looks a bit odd without one IMO. Sort of 'unfinished.'

ollobololo · 30/01/2022 16:27

from a feng shui perspective - yes, a solid one! meant to offer stability to the person sleeping in it.

alwaysscared · 30/01/2022 18:25

I have ordered one with a headboard 😂

Nope

pastypirate · 30/01/2022 18:26

I bought a metal frame with no headboard....and then installed one. Padded one is so lovely to lean on

sst1234 · 30/01/2022 18:28

I headboard would simply look weird.

Hairyfriend · 30/01/2022 18:39

Glad to see the update that you ordered one OP!

I was going to echo others, in that the wall gets filthy without one. I had a bed without a headboard for years and it wasn't till I moved the bed, that I realised how stained the wall was!!! The paint was wearing from propping pillows on the wall to watch TV, plus (I assume) the oil on your head had made a mark over time. It looked grim, so I'd always get a head board going forward.

ThinWomansBrain · 30/01/2022 18:41

several of the Q&A on the item description menttion lack of headboard and lack of attachments to fix one to.
If it's important to you look for something else - or if you try it and decide you would prefer a headboard, look for something else.
I did have a bed with no headboard for a while, then bought one separately (it did have attachments for one)

PinkSyCo · 30/01/2022 18:42

I never had a headboard and then finally bought the coco bed from Loaf. I am now obsessed with headboards and would never go back.

There you go OP and it only costs 13 times more than the bed you had your eye on. 🤦🏽‍♀️ 😂

Sideswiped · 30/01/2022 19:02

Too late for you, OP, but for anyone else interested:
A simple solution (beside the screw-to-the -wall option) is to buy a good-looking curtain rail and two of the square continental pillows. You can then have the covers of your choice (just see some ties on to them) and they are washable too.

I find it really hard to sleep without a headboard - the pillow starts slipping off the bed.

liveforsummer · 30/01/2022 19:37

I agree it looks a bit student digs/cheap furnished rental and also more awkward for sitting up in bed reading etc.

eldora · 30/01/2022 19:52

I don’t even like headboards anymore, I like the all in one bed-frames that have a headboard built in.

So yes, definitely need one of these, the rooms looks incomplete without it.

Also, spiders near the skirting board will have easier access to your head without a headboard.

It doesn’t need to be expensive, our entire bedframe (with built in headboard) was £200, as strong as an ox, and still gets compliments 7 years later.

MrsToothyBitch · 30/01/2022 19:57

I prefer a headboard. Nicer to rest up against and looks finished.

bushhbb · 30/01/2022 20:12

Why would anyone deliberately purchase a bed with no headboard - it's the kind of thing stingy landlords put up in their rented property. Also leaves a grease stain because it's against the wall.

DilemmaDelilah · 31/01/2022 15:07

You need a headboard if you are going to sit up in bed for any reason. Breakfast in bed, reading, watching telly etc. Otherwise you lose your pillows between the bed and the wall. A headboard attached to the wall and not the bed gives you the same problem. If you only ever use your bed for sleeping and activities which do not require leaning against a headboard then crack on. It's not for me.... I particularly hate staying in hotels which look like there is a headboard and there is only something attached to the wall. Half an hour of trying to read/watch the telly and the bed has moved 6 inches away from the wall and the pillows have disappeared down the gap.

alwaysscared · 31/01/2022 15:22

This is the one I went for, probs not to everyone's taste but I like the design on the, dare I say it, headboard.... 😂

I think if you have enough pillows and a flat wall to lean them against, it's not vital to have a headboard. Our spare bed doesn't, I've slept in ti and been fine. For full-time use, I prefer to have one.

Ozanj · 31/01/2022 15:24

Headboards were designed for insulation, to prevent you from getting cold from the (often damp, mould infested) wall. Provided your wall isn’t in that state it’s perfectly fine to go without

Thirtytimesround · 31/01/2022 15:27

If you have a light-coloured painted wall you may get grease stains (from hair) without a headboard, I’ve seen this.

But who cares this isn’t right or wrong, if your husband loves headboards why not just let him get a headboard? He shouldn’t have to prove his case.

InvisibleDragon · 31/01/2022 15:44

I've had a bed a bit like that with no headboard. The mattress gradually slides away from the wall and then the pillows fall down the gap. Very annoying.

YouHaveNoAuthorityHereJackie · 31/01/2022 15:48

Dd has www.ikea.com/au/en/p/gjoera-bed-frame-birch-s09156308/ this bed which I love the look of, but I hate sitting and reading her stories in it. I’d always go for a headboard in future

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 31/01/2022 15:51

What? Isn't the back of your bed against the wall? Where is it falling off?
Whosthebestbabainalltheworld · 31/01/2022 15:58

A black Nordli headboard from ikea would go perfectly with that. Attached to the wall, independent of the bed.

SausageSoupSaturday · 31/01/2022 16:03

@Clarinet1

With no headboard you would tend to find that the wall gets grubby from hair rubbing it etc over time.
This. Greasy head marks on the wall is not a great look.
