What do you do to prevent salt spilling out the bottom of the grinder all over the cupboard base?

I'm aware this is a first world problem but I'm so over the salty spillage

Currently contemplating a return to fine salt shakers!!

BU: put up with the salt and clean your cupboards out more often

NBU: buy a 50p shaker and move on

My salt remains in the container it came in but I don't add it in cooking and only have it for fish n chips so it's never on display.

PickAChew · 28/01/2022 19:18

I have one with a lid that you store grinder upwards. Used to have one without a lid but that quickly got disgusting.

I use a tiny saucer which was a dipping dish in a previous life !

AuntyBumBum · 28/01/2022 19:18

Don't use a salt mill, they're pointless. Pepper ideally needs to be freshly ground for flavour. Salt does not.

gluenotsoup · 28/01/2022 19:19

Hmm. I don’t like it it either but just put up with it. That’s not much help is it?😂

SmolCat · 28/01/2022 19:19

Mine stands upside down (on purpose, it was designed that way). It’s just a supermarket one.

Hiphopopotamus · 28/01/2022 19:19

@ouch321 you never use any salt in cooking??

dudsville · 28/01/2022 19:19

I have a danish looking wooden thing from John Lewis, I think it's meant to be a baguette server but who does that?! It sits alongside my hob and houses the most frequently used items, including the messy pepper grinder and salt mill, the drippy olive oil, etc.. Then occasionally the wooden things gets a rinse.

Itonlytakesonetree · 28/01/2022 19:20

I have a salt pig.

ElftonWednesday · 28/01/2022 19:20

I just chuck the dobbing great crystals into things.

MountainAshley · 28/01/2022 19:21

I have a small pepper grinder tray. You can get them on Amazon.

CoupDeGrass · 28/01/2022 19:21

Salt pig.

ItRainedForever · 28/01/2022 19:24

Mine's in a repurposed Gu ramekin. They're just the right size for my salt and pepper mills.

ToManderleyAgain · 28/01/2022 19:26

Mine stands with the pepper on a decorative tile

MsAgnesDiPesto · 28/01/2022 19:27

We have ‘upside down’ salt and pepper grinders, which solves the problem! They were very cheap, from IKEA over 20 years ago and are still going strong. Ceramic grinders seem to last forever.

AnotherMansCause · 28/01/2022 19:29

We like the pink salt, it has to be in a grinder. I clean the cupboard out when I remember. When I say I clean the cupboard, I mean I give it a quick sweep out with the back of my hand while I'm waiting for the kettle to boil.

Bunce1 · 28/01/2022 19:29

I have a pos little egg cup that has maldon salt flakes in and then a pottery salt pig.

AAAAAGHH · 28/01/2022 19:32

Mine stands upright and has a wee lid - no salt spillage here Smile

Hollytreenew · 28/01/2022 19:37

Use something like this! For the salt and pepper grinder.

NotquitewhatImeant · 28/01/2022 19:38

I was wondering about this just yesterday!

catwomando · 28/01/2022 19:38

I've got a cheap IKEA salt mill the mill is at the top so it doesn't spill.

Not pretty but it works.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 28/01/2022 19:39

Ramekin. Just don't get it jammed DH I'm looking at you 🤦‍♀️

Bouncebacker · 28/01/2022 19:40

I hardly use the grinder, but have an upside down design which goes on to the table for serving when we have guests. Salt for cooking is flaked sea salt in a little salt pig

FelicityBeedle · 28/01/2022 19:42

I’ve got a dual ended salt/pepper grinder from Amazon that has a lid for each side. I prefer it as the lid can collect the salt/pepper as you’re grinding so the steam doesn’t make it all get gunked up.
