I know he'll be replaced by someone equally awful and I know he's not quite gone yet, but I can't remember when I felt uplifted about politics and the ejection of this national embarrassment is warming my cockles. Anyone else feel the same?

Blackmailing potential defectors is normal, but it is usually confined to telling anyone who write to the 1922 committee that they stand no chance of any sort of promotion. They seem to be going overboard on this one.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 20/01/2022 10:35

@Florianus

ThinkAboutItTomorrow This sort of work event was not in the rules.

Exactly. That is why there is debate about it, rather than certainty.

The rules said only those events that were necessary. There is no way drinks in the garden was necessary. No way.

The rules were clear enough and the BYOB drinks in the garden with 100 invitees broke them.

Blossomtoes · 20/01/2022 10:36

Where in that invitation does it say that the event was a party?

You just said that was irrelevant. For the love of God, make up your mind.

the80sweregreat · 20/01/2022 10:38

I'm still surprised that Carrie Johnson's moving around during the first lockdown in 2020 between number 10 and Chequers is still not being mentioned again ( I heard of this first on lbc on Tuesday morning)
It Might have been within the rules because she was pregnant with her son , but I've not seen or heard any more references to it since anywhere else.
Apparently domestic staff were concerned she was doing this. Covid 19 was rife at the end of March at number 10 as well.
I'm not surprised that the chief whips are trying to stop any more rebellious behavior by the younger MPs. Maybe they are all just waiting on the inquires too? It's dirty tricks, but what you would expect to protect the PM :(

Cornettoninja · 20/01/2022 10:39

If these latest accusations prove to have substance it seems that some tories are disproportionally concerned about their ‘work’ practices.

If I was a self-declared Tory supporter or valued our political system I would be seeking to distance myself from this cabinet.

Cornettoninja · 20/01/2022 10:42

@ENoeuf

Shock William wragg - LBC reporting that the person who defected yesterday has already been referred to as having ‘personal problems’.
I believe this has been suggested by another MP? It’s a smear campaign from what I can tell.
ENoeuf · 20/01/2022 10:44

Yes - LBC saying one went on the record yesterday to say this.

OhWhyNot · 20/01/2022 10:44

He isn’t out yet

I don’t think he cares much about being humiliated most would feel humiliated his emotion is probably being annoyed

I wouldn’t celebrate too soon I’m not sure he will be out

Blossomtoes · 20/01/2022 10:44

I just heard an interview with Anna Soubrey. She says the current Tory party is unrecognisable from the one she was elected to represent in 2010 and she finds it abhorrent now. Given that she voted for all devastation of austerity, that’s quite an indictment.

SueSaid · 20/01/2022 10:47

'I just heard an interview with Anna Soubrey'

Oh she's been harping on for years, pre covid she only had whines and moans. I'm surprised anyone bothers interviewing her tbh.

Blossomtoes · 20/01/2022 10:50

Of course she has. She was a remainer, what do you expect? It doesn’t make her opinion any less valid. On that basis, perhaps nobody should bother listening to you.
ClaudineClare · 20/01/2022 10:58

They really are floundering in faeces. I hope one of the MPs concerned reports the intimidation to the pice, but I doubt they will.

ClaudineClare · 20/01/2022 11:01

Police!

Cornettoninja · 20/01/2022 11:03

… and Sue Gray has apparently confirmed that she has possession of an email advising BJ that the ‘work event’ shouldn’t go ahead.

Busy morning today.

Notonthestairs · 20/01/2022 11:05

The email warning that the party was in contradiction of the regs was sent to the PPS I believe, not Johnson.

BashStreetKid · 20/01/2022 11:11

WTAF? We have now reached a point where government ministers, Whips and SPADs have to be reminded by other Conservatives that, um, intimidation and blackmail aren't acceptable?

This is getting actively scary.

ClaudineClare · 20/01/2022 11:12

I can't stand Andrew Bridgen, but v interesting piece here. He thinks DC is working to a grid and has more to lob at the government. He also mentions a smear against him which ties in with what Wragg is saying about No.10's current tactics.

BashStreetKid · 20/01/2022 11:12

@Notonthestairs

The email warning that the party was in contradiction of the regs was sent to the PPS I believe, not Johnson.
And do we seriously believe that the PPS said "Oh, that's interesting", and did nothing else with it?

I do hope they're interrogating the email system to see who the PPS forwarded it to.

callingon · 20/01/2022 11:13

I think I’m going to have to borrow down advice from the Relationship board for the poster so keen to defend Johnson… you need to spend some time examining your own boundaries as to why you think it’s ok for you to put up with being gaslighted like this.

ClaudineClare · 20/01/2022 11:13

No.10's current tactics. My typing is shite today.

BashStreetKid · 20/01/2022 11:13

@WindyState

"It's easy for Johnson to say that now, but the point is that at the time he did not put a stop to it because, as he said, he believed it was a work event."

Yeah, sure.

Which comes back to the question that was put to him yesterday: Is your excuse seriously that you were not criminal, you were merely exceptionally stupid?
ClaudineClare · 20/01/2022 11:14

@Notonthestairs

The email warning that the party was in contradiction of the regs was sent to the PPS I believe, not Johnson.
Do you have a link reporting that, or is that what you personally believe?
Maverick197 · 20/01/2022 11:16

Looks like he's gone into full Trump mode- clinging on at all cost. Scary!

ClaudineClare · 20/01/2022 11:16

@ClaudineClare

No.10's current tactics. My typing is shite today.
Oh ffs current not rent. Angry
Notonthestairs · 20/01/2022 11:18

@BashStreetKid I doubt it was forwarded on. They wouldn't create a paper trail unless they had to. And any follow up conversation will likely be "forgotten".
Anyway I'm sure they'll create sufficient wriggle room.
