To hate beige buffet food?

Went to a couple of family parties recently with buffets of beige. Sausage rolls, cheese sandwiches, scotch eggs, breadsticks, crisps. A sea of golden brown and dry food.

It’s my daughters birthday coming up. What would be on your dream buffet menu?

YABU - I love a beige buffet. Embrace sausage rolls!

YANBU - give me veggie noodle salads and Parma ham wrapped green beans.

Haha, I live somewhere where that kind of fare is unavailable so I covet the scotch eggs and sausage rolls! Oh and pork pie Smile

How about a combination? Also you can get really nice sausage rolls and what I’d consider traditional party buffet food. It doesn’t have to be cheap and nasty if you can afford. Some of those, some nice Bright salads. My mum always does a Nigella Asian noodle salad at parties which is lovely.

LagunaBubbles · 14/01/2022 21:45

Why would sausage rolls etc be dry?

Nutrigrainygoodness · 14/01/2022 21:46

If you don't do a cheese and pickled onion hedgehog you've failed as a parent 😂😂😉

HelloDulling · 14/01/2022 21:47

For me, cheese, meats, mix of salads, breads. For DH, the more beige the better.

Nosquit · 14/01/2022 21:49

I mean I put YABU - But I think the ideal is a whole load of the good old beige food with a generous helping of more colourful healthy (and even not so healthy) food too. My ideal buffet has a bit of both.

JaceLancs · 14/01/2022 21:50

I’m gluten free so couldn’t eat it anyway
If we have a buffet we have eggs, salads, cheese, cold meats, prawns, salmon, pate, dips and crudités, nachos, new potatoes, coleslaw etc

MeatyRvita · 14/01/2022 21:51

My dream scenario would be a combo of both!
Sausage rolls, cheese and pineapples on sticks, scotch eggs etc but also nice baguette, charcuterie board, olives, sundried tomatoes, salads etc

SarahJessicaParkin · 14/01/2022 21:52

Don't know how to vote as I don't like the sound of either buffet. Parma ham wrapped green beans sound dreadful to me. Actually, maybe I just don't like buffets 🤔

...I'll get my coat Grin

SlyAvocado · 14/01/2022 21:52

Cheese and pineapple hedgehog surely?!

Ragwort · 14/01/2022 21:55

I like a combination- and, without sounding a snob, homemade sausage rolls, quiche etc are delicious... 'value' brands obviously not.

minipie · 14/01/2022 21:56

How old is your daughter? Most primary age kids would be unimpressed by a veggie noodle salad. As would I, if I’m completely honest.

You can do a mix surely.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 14/01/2022 21:57

I like things such as prawns in breadcrumbs (beige I know) chicken satay, rice salad and other salads, skewers of some nature, falafel, a cheeseboard, a few types of bread and smoked salmon blinis etc. A bit of a random list.

44PumpLane · 14/01/2022 21:59
  • Toothpick tricolor salad (cherry tomato cut in half, basil leaf wrapped round a mozzarella ball with each half of the cherry Tom on top and bottom)
  • Prawn vol au vent
  • orzo salad with loads of peppers and tomatoes and spinach
  • parma ham wrapped figs

All delicious and work perfectly alongside sausage rolls, quiches and cold pizza Grin

SlashBeef · 14/01/2022 22:00

Parma ham wrapped green beans...?

Camomila · 14/01/2022 22:01

Fruit kebabs are really fun for primary age DC.

(I find at birthday parties the fruit is always one of the first things to get eaten - probably because the DC are hot from running about)

Not one of your options but my ideal buffet would be "afternoon tea" foods, lots of tiny sandwiches and little cakes.

mumofEandE · 14/01/2022 22:02

I did cheese and pineapple hedgehogs for my Year 7s Christmas party-

11 year olds Minds blown !
20 something year old LSA Mind blown !

Lozza70 · 14/01/2022 22:03

Freezer tapas! The best…

Fallible · 14/01/2022 22:06

Ideally a mix of both. I love sausage rolls, but I also need some veg when I'm eating.

Also a good potato salad is always a winner for me.

Georgeskitchen · 14/01/2022 22:06

Sausage rolls, scotch eggs, pork patties and cheese and pineapple hedgehog my dream come true 😋😋

SlyAvocado · 14/01/2022 22:08

Vol au vonts.

Just put loads of different fillings in VAV.

That’s what I insisted on doing for my evening wedding buffet 😂

There’s nowt thou can’t put in a vol au vont

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/01/2022 22:10

I love a cocktail sausage. Plain or rolled in a mixture of honey and mustard. Love the tricolour salad idea @44PumpLane.

MorrisZapp · 14/01/2022 22:10

Put out a big tray of sausage rolls and a big bowl of colourful salad.

If the sausage rolls outlive the salad I'll eat my hat.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 14/01/2022 22:10

I can be an absolutely wanky foodie type and would happily eat Parma ham wrapped green beans.

But fuck me, I bloody love a buffet. Sausage rolls, crisps, breadsticks and cheese sandwiches you say? I’ll be round in a minute. If there’s vol-au-vents (especially prawn and Marie Rose sauce ones) I may never leave.

FindMeInTheSunshine · 14/01/2022 22:11

I like both! For finger buffets I find it difficult to do much that doesnt have carbohydrates included, which tends to make it more on the beige side. And, of your daughter is young then sausage rolls and crisps sound perfect! But if she's an adult then there are better options. For finger or fork buffet food my favourites I've had are probably: Parma wrapped asparagus; rare beef and blue cheese on mini skewers; tomato, mozzarella and pesto/ basil on mini skewers; hummus and roasted pepper wheels; and a minced Thai chicken on endive/chicory leaves.

WonderfulYou · 14/01/2022 22:11

How old is your daughter?
Most kids want beige food so do the majority that and add some of the other stuff.
