To hate beige buffet food?

Went to a couple of family parties recently with buffets of beige. Sausage rolls, cheese sandwiches, scotch eggs, breadsticks, crisps. A sea of golden brown and dry food.

It’s my daughters birthday coming up. What would be on your dream buffet menu?

YABU - I love a beige buffet. Embrace sausage rolls!

YANBU - give me veggie noodle salads and Parma ham wrapped green beans.

Red, yellow and green pepper slices, black and green olives, stuffed vine leaves, tomato and mozzarella salad with basil, cheeses with grapes and various breads, tomato pasta salad, beetroot salad, home made coleslaw, nice ham and chicken, fruit skewers. I hate beige food.

I like to mix in some hot food Iceland do the best mini bites, hot oven for cooking and you can have tasty colourful food mixed in with the beige

gogohm · 14/01/2022 22:18

Prefer antipasti myself but good sausage rolls are delicious

Diversion · 14/01/2022 22:19

Mushroom and prawn vol au vonts, still beige but I love a cold vol au vont for breakfast the next day.

@Nutrigrainygoodness

If you don't do a cheese and pickled onion hedgehog you've failed as a parent 😂😂😉
Cheese and pineapple. Cheese and pickled onions is child abuse.

My mum used to do a Saturday afternoon buffet every week and family would just drop in and get fed. Several baguettes cut into rounds, huge trays of chicken drumsticks fresh out the oven, coleslaw, corn on the cob, an array of spreadable things to go on the bread - Brussels pate, real butter, cheese, a selection of jars of pickles.

Then the Sara Lee chocolate gateaux, Iceland defrosted cheesecake and massive trifle would come out for everyone to help themselves to.

There'd be a kick off of epic proportions by the 2 and 36 year old if sausage rolls and picnic eggs didn't feature on a buffet. But a big salad/cucumber/carrot fingers, cheese, ham, salami And fruit salad Can help brighten it up. But beige is essential.

RantyAunty · 14/01/2022 22:25

Maybe the family parties were things people would actually eat and easy to make.

That would be my priority for a kid's party.

CatsArePeople · 14/01/2022 22:30

i'm not a fan of it at all, but if you have a lot of guests, especially different age groups... what can you do, apart from food that everybody is familiar with?

TeenTraumaTrials · 14/01/2022 22:31

Love a bit of beige buffet food (more of the filo prawns, halloumi bites, spring rolls type). But always also serve baby Tom's, cut pepper and cucumber etc.

If we're talking vol-au-vents they are just too small. What you need is a giant yorkie filled with tinned chicken in white sauce (add spinach for some veg)

Yesthatscorrect · 14/01/2022 22:37

Yanbu I hate that stuff and I also don't like those grazing board things. I know I'm odd. I like more unconventional buffet type food like loads of different salads, noodles etc. I'm not really into pastry.

Lindy2 · 14/01/2022 22:39

I love a buffet. I'll eat beige but a fairly fancy buffet spread is my favourite, sushi, prawns, salmon, antipasti, fancy pasta salads, halloumi etc.

However, if it's for kids I think your best bet is the usual kids party staples of crisps, cheese sandwiches, cocktail sausages with some cucumber slices as an acknowledgement towards healthy eating.

BootySOS · 14/01/2022 22:44

Not fussed either way. I like both.
But why go to all the added expense of a non-beige buffet for people who prefer a beige buffet. Save the ££ difference and order a delicious take away or go out for a nice meal once they have left!

Hankunamatata · 14/01/2022 22:45

def not green beans in parma ham but as most people said a mix - salad, olives, crudités, dip plus beige food

amidsummernightsdream · 14/01/2022 22:47

Oh I’m doing a buffet/ tea party for my dd christening tomorrow. I was worried I hadn’t done enough food and now I’m worrying it’s too beige as well 🙈

mafted · 14/01/2022 23:00

My dream buffet is the kind where there's a few hot dishes and maybe a couple of salads that someone serves you.
Not really what you'd have a kids party (assuming your DD is a child) although DS did once go to a party at his friends house and they did exactly that. It was fantastic.

FusionChefGeoff · 14/01/2022 23:19

Heathen

Dogmum40 · 14/01/2022 23:38

I’m 41 and love a buffet! Grew up with them as party food and still have them now! Along with gateaux and trifle!!

I do try and add a bit of 21 century food in like salmon, charcuterie and crudités etc.. the 7 year old me and the 41 year old me would be truly heartbroken if cheese and pineapple on sticks were to be replaced by noodles and salad 😆

Sorry!!!!

Heartofglass12345 · 14/01/2022 23:57

YABU I do not want healthy food at a buffet Grin I like chicken on a buffet too

dreamingbohemian · 15/01/2022 00:04

I can't tell if people are joking about the cheese and pineapple hedgehogs

(I'm not British)

Kite22 · 15/01/2022 00:07

I followed your instructions so had to vote YABU, but of course anyone can dislike what they dislike - it isn't unreasonable to dislike something.

I love a good buffet myself - right up there in my top 5 favourite meals Smile
I do miss vol-au-vents though. Don't tend to see them regularly on buffet table, which is a big loss to the buffet table IMO, even though they are also beige.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 15/01/2022 00:11

Who is the buffet for?
Family of mixed ages - do a bit of everything that can be eaten as finger food.
Kids from school - keep it beige. You’ll be throwing away all the healthier stuff otherwise.
I love a beige buffet myself. So do my kids. Other people don’t count 😁

Nope they are not. It’s a nostalgic party food. I definitely had them at my birthday parties in the 80s, they were around in the 70s but I’m not sure how far they go back.

Can you define 'family party'? Was it an adult or childrens birthday party or just a family get together with all ages attending? Either way, I'd expect more than just beige food!

My ideal would be things I make at home myself:

  • sushi
  • Vietnamese summer rolls
  • rare beef salad
  • Som tam (papaya salad)
  • halloumi/watermelon/bean salad
  • Choi Sum/Gai-Lan with hoisin dressing
  • pumpkin/pinenut/feta salad
  • Quiche/open tarts and salads
madamehooch · 15/01/2022 01:49

I love a 1980's wedding buffet. I mourn their loss. Hog roast? Pah!

Nothing beats the pleasure of finding that strategic spot near the table where you can go up as many times as you like without being judged. No one wanted to do the walk of shame across the dancefloor.

Of course, these were the days when there was enough food to sink a battle ship. Prawn vol au vonts, at least four different types of sandwich, quiche, cocktail sausages, silver-skinned pickled onions, cheese and pineapple, bowls of crisps where you never knew what flavour you were getting, bbq chicken drumsticks...

Paper plates bowing in the middle, taking one bite of everything to mix textures and flavours, all washed down with a glass or cheap plonk. The prickly tear eyes when you were on your last mouthful, knowing that all the cousins were now married...

If I'd known it was the last time, it would have been a three-visit job.

I will have my day again.
