Blair knighthood

Mummyrowland · 03/01/2022 02:54

Nearly half a million people have signed a petition over his knighthood in 48 hours.

It should be removed and he shouldn't be awarded it.

After all what did he do that was good?

What about all the squaddies he sent to their deaths over the supposed wmds?

High ranking members of the armed forces are threatening resignation if his award isn't reconsider

I'm genuinely interested if people vote ibu as I need to understand what good he did? The timing of the award given the recent demise of Afghanistan isn't favorable

I wonder whether the long wait for a K was itself supposed to be the punishment for that pesky warmongering behaviour? Ex PMs usually get elevated sooner. That must be the misguided rationale, but it’s tone deaf to public opinion.

Not good enough, and really not on. Do the panel really have such short memories?

silentpool · 03/01/2022 03:16

He should be in jail.

Just as ugly as Thatcher becoming a baroness after being very chummy with General Pinochet, she also had blood on her hands. The older I get the more cynical I become about leaders….

I read somewhere that the fact Blair didn’t have an honour ( it was alluded to that this was largely due to his fractious relationship with The Queen) was causing an issue for subsequent PMs because they cannot be given honours ahead of Blair.

However, if the whole system is scrutinised it is clear that many other honoured individuals also have made decisions, lied, have directly been implicated in deaths.

I’m not saying Blair having an honour is right, I am just pointing out how utterly immoral and corrupt the whole process appears to be.

Mummyrowland · 03/01/2022 12:09

I def agree he should be in jail.

Veterans mothers are going to returned medals earned in protest

Would be great to see him stripped of the title. Unfortunately very unlikely to happen.

Carrieannallee · 03/01/2022 12:13

Signed!!!

PersonaNonGarter · 03/01/2022 12:16

Of course he should be knighted.

I never voted for him, but millions did and he was PM for a long time and acted on what he thought was right.

Despite thinking he was a tit when he was in office, I have felt genuinely sorry for him on occasion since. His party literally cannot see that without him they would have been out of power even longer. They are so weirdly ungrateful.

llansannan22 · 03/01/2022 12:17

I think he should face criminal charges (as should the current PM for different reasons). Don't expect that to happen or the knighthood be rescinded.

Wecando · 03/01/2022 12:18

Signed!!!

Is that you Cherie?

theNumbersStation · 03/01/2022 12:24

An appalling decision.

We have not forgotten MR Blair.

theNumbersStation · 03/01/2022 12:25

Signed.

DottyDoge · 03/01/2022 12:27

YABU, he was PM for 10 years and won three elections.

colourfulpuddles · 03/01/2022 12:30

YABU and you need to calm down and mind your own business. He did great things for this country and you should be grateful.

user1471443411 · 03/01/2022 12:30

I agree and have signed the petition. I don't think it will be rescinded but it will be good if they have a debate in parliament, especially if the petition has millions of signatures by then.

madisonbridges · 03/01/2022 12:31

I never voted for him, but millions did and he was PM for a long time and acted on what he thought was right.

But this isn't right. He had a dossier issued by the secret services to get backing for the war but they knew stuff in it wasn't correct. Claims based on that dossier were made in newspapers that were wrong and he didn't have them corrected. Hans Blick had already said there were no WMDs in Iraq. And Blair has since said he decided to go to war because the USA had decided to and he felt it was important to back the US regardless of the rights or wrongs. He misled Parliament and the British people. I never believed that any PM of any political colour would take us to war and risk its own soldiers on a lie. But he did and I believe he changed the relationship between politicians and the electorate. It isn't because he told a lie that he shouldn't get a knighthood - all politicians do that! It it was the magnitude of the lie and the lack of thought ofver the repercussions of the result of that war that should preclude him from receiving that knighthood.

luckylavender · 03/01/2022 12:31

Iraq was a terrible error of judgement - but supported by the Tories, a fact that many people chose to overlook. Other than that he won 3 elections and did an awful lot of good, not least the GFA. Compared to the current government he was a saint.

Pirrip1 · 03/01/2022 12:34

What good did John Major do? He has a knighthood.

What good did Margaret Thatcher do? She was made a Baroness.

What good did Churchill do? He sent plenty of squaddies to their death. He was knighted when he retired.

It wasn't an error of judgement. He said he'd do it again. He lied to parliament and the electorate in the dossier he had the secret services produce. That war was the catalyst for the deaths of millions of people and the unrest that is still going on.

Seriously, you're comparing Churchill to Blair! 😅
WindyState · 03/01/2022 12:39

Is it not a given that PM's get knighted?

And if you want an answer to the question of what good did he do, it's perhaps worth remembering that the Good Friday agreement was signed under his government.
