Ran dd15 physical symptoms by G.p . She said bring in dd to have e.c.g and that she thought she could have p.o.ts syndrome.
ECG was fine, blood pressure low on standing but nothing to worry about..But she also said that we were to look up somatic. Is this the same then as hypochondria, if so why not just say! How do I cure the somatic ?

I asked if she had pots, should she have tilt test ? She said no as she was not passing out. So I'm confused. A.i.b.u being confused ?
Also above g.p's head, a framed Bible poster saying that those who believe in Jesus will see their health soar (like eagles wings). So belief will make her well? I'm sure there was some mention of once she has this diagnosis, she won't have to knock on medical doors (well what if she does need to consult, what is this about ?!) .

See another GP?

ParkheadParadise · 31/12/2021 20:32

I love the hymn On Eagles Wings 👼
Can't comment on your GP.

secular39 · 31/12/2021 20:32

Don't understand your post. See another GP if you have an issue of him/her being a Christian.

Twillow · 31/12/2021 20:34

Did she say somatic or psychosomatic? Because one is actually physical and the other is to do with physical issues caused by psychological issues.

Dontletthemuggglesgetyoudown · 31/12/2021 20:36

Christ the GP is allowed to have their own faith Hmm

Rosemaryandlemon · 31/12/2021 20:39

Hypochondria is not the same as somatic.

Hypochondria is a fear of a serious illness. So a cough is lung cancer. A headache is a brain tumour. It can be debilitating for some people and they can require therapy.

Somatic is when there is not an “organic” reason to cause the symptoms, but they are genuine. If the doctor believes your daughters are somatic then he shouldn’t be telling you just to look at the internet, he should be investigating if there is underlying factors that could be giving rise to it (so stress is often a big cause. Often people talk about “conversion” the stress manifesting as physical symptoms).

I would ask to see another gp.

Too much wine

Ireolu · 31/12/2021 20:40

What does the GPs religion have to do with their ability or inability to make a diagnosis? Nothing.

Is the OP drunk?

steff13 · 31/12/2021 20:43

I don't think the doctor's religion has anything to do with it. I'm sure there are good and bad doctors of all faiths.

So she just told you to look up somatic? She didn't suggest any further testing or treatment?

saraclara · 31/12/2021 20:43

@Ireolu

I'd agree, but...

Also above g.p's head, a framed Bible poster saying that those who believe in Jesus will see their health soar (like eagles wings).

That's close to proselytising.

Totallyfoodedout · 31/12/2021 20:54

Was it this verse OP? If so, it's about being patient and waiting on the Lord to give you strength when you're about to give in on something. Sort of, recharging the batteries if you like.
It's not about health per se.

Yes, but they're not supposed to use it as a diagnostic tool, or for it to directly influence the way they deal with patients.
Polkadotties · 31/12/2021 21:02

The GP shouldn’t be allowed to have their faith influence they practice. I was once refused the morning after pill in a boots chemist due to the pharmacist’s religion

@Polkadotties

I was refused the morning after pill in a bloody family planning clinic by a doctor who banged on about the evils of abortion. Disgraceful.

That is not what seems to be happening here, although it is difficult to tell without a clearer account.

Suggesting that the patient's symptoms might be somatic in someway in nothing to do with religion and suggesting that they look this up while not ideal is nothing to do with religion. Displaying a Bible verse is perhaps a bit insensitive, maybe even inappropriate but from what the OP says it has not affected treatment or diagnosis.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 31/12/2021 21:13

So many Christians become doctors. I know so many evangelical Christian doctors. Not a single one has ever crossed a professional line and every single one has embraced everyone they have treated.

I also know a number of Tamil, Muslim and Jewish doctors. The best people I have ever met

I think so🙄
DroopyClematis · 31/12/2021 21:17

Sorry, your post is difficult to understand.
What does somatic , p.o. ts mean?
Does a doctor's faith really have a bearing?

EyesAsGreenAsAFreshPickledToad · 31/12/2021 21:19

I need a doctor now. This post hurt my head a lot.

AnnaMagnani · 31/12/2021 21:20

Don't think the GP's faith has anything to do with it.

I started having near blackouts and dropping my BP a lot in my teens, always had low BP - got told it was psychosomatic.

In my 40s got diagnosis of POTS which it had obviously been all along.

Cuck00soup · 31/12/2021 21:20

Are you sure she didn't say syncope?

MadMadMadamMim · 31/12/2021 21:20

Are you bigoted against all religions? Or just Christians?

The majority of the Asian doctors at our surgery are Muslim. I don't have an issue with it. Are medical practitioners not allowed to have a faith? Do you think it somehow affects their training and medical knowledge?
