I went out for a walk this evening and really enjoyed seeing the Christmas lights and decorations out.

With the rising numbers, January swiftly approaching and the gloom of wet, dark days, who's with me to ask everyone to keep the decorations up for January?

Traditionally they stay up until Candlemas Eve (1 Feb).

The whole 12th night thing (6 Jan) is a more modern twist.

Chouetted · 31/12/2021 00:17

I only put mine up at Christmas - before then I have an Advent wreath and candle arch, but I hate the merging of the two seasons.

I'm keeping mine up till Candlemas, as usual. It seems a shame to take them down after only twelve days. You're all welcome to join me.

SituationCritical · 31/12/2021 00:19

I don't keep mine up past the 2nd/3rd January, but I will miss walking the dog looking at all the colourful lights and decorations every evening. I hate January and February.

There is a chap in the town local to my parents with a beautiful bay window (in a gorgeous room floor to ceiling with bookshelves). He puts his tree up late on Christmas Eve and it stays there til Candlemas when everyone else has taken theirs down. It's a lovely little scene.

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 31/12/2021 01:06

I got my Xmas tree on November 28th in 2020 and kept it up for 10 weeks!!
Prob keep as long as it had needles this year too!

thefirstmrsrochester · 31/12/2021 01:11

Down on 5 Jan, we get a real tree so it’s dropping badly by then. I’m going to keep the fairy lights about the house until there is more natural light about the place.

DramaAlpaca · 31/12/2021 01:18

My tree is coming down at 12th Night as usual but I'm tempted to leave the lights up longer. I think I did so last year too.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 31/12/2021 01:22

Nah mine comes down when I feel Xmas is over. So normally the 31st but this year it was 30th as I am having an op today.

Oldenoughtobedead · 31/12/2021 01:25

I kept mine up for January last year and it really helped lift the winter blues I normally get

campion · 31/12/2021 01:26

Kept ours up well into January and suddenly the room filled with tiny flies. Apparently the eggs had hatched Shock
The quickest ever undecorating and chucking out of a tree followed!

Think we'll go just a few days beyond 12th night this time.
We do have fairy lights on an arch all year though; too much faff to take them down/ put them up.And they cheer me up.

PurpleSproutingSomething · 31/12/2021 01:53

Mine came down on 27th. Just wasn't in the mood this year.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 31/12/2021 02:46

Mine didn’t go up. Felt utterly bereft of festive spirit again this year.

Topseyt · 31/12/2021 02:52

The remainder of ours are coming down today. I can't wait!

KloppsTeeth · 31/12/2021 05:02

We’ll be taking ours down, but I think we will keep the outside lights on for another few weeks. If it cheers one person up when they are walking past then it will be worth it.

readingismycardio · 31/12/2021 05:29

Took ours off yesterday as we're away for NYE and I didn't feel like doing it tomorrow. I'm sad, but I want to start 2022 with a clean and organised house

Joystir59 · 31/12/2021 06:02

My decs are already down and always have to be before Nye as I get very depressed otherwise..Jan is hard enough with all the getting dusty tat of Christmas hanging round.

Explosivefarts · 31/12/2021 06:14

Down on the 27th here

crivit · 31/12/2021 07:24

Another one here who keeps things up until the start of February (Imbolc for me). Certainly does help January feel lovely 😊. Never had a problem with real trees struggling to last that long either.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/12/2021 07:27

Not me, they need to come down. Ours are down today ahead of a sparkly new year.

LightBulbous · 31/12/2021 07:32

Mine came down yesterday so that we can start the new year clear of clutter

FlamesEmbersAshes · 31/12/2021 08:02

I’ve already taken mine down but the DCs wanted the fairly lights to stay so we still have several strands of those draped around the living room.

Darbs76 · 31/12/2021 08:05

I’ve got some light up twigs for my room as I love the lights, be gutted to see them go! I’m not keeping them up though

onedayoranother · 31/12/2021 08:06

Nope I'm taking mine down in a few days - I don't like them up much in the New Year, which feels like a separate holiday and requires a clean slate. I love the decorations but more in the lead up and this week, after that I want them gone.

Chasingaftermidnight · 31/12/2021 08:06

I’m with you. Lots of people round here have really nice lights on the exteriors of their houses and I love seeing them when I walk past. Maybe I’ll put notes through their doors suggesting it Smile

MsTSwift · 31/12/2021 08:11

Adore Christmas and the run up to it but shabby Christmas decorations left up until mid Jan I find depressing somehow. They look sad and bedraggled. I assume the householder just can’t be arsed to take them down.

Everything gone by the time school starts - quite like fresh clean slate feeling of January.
