I went out for a walk this evening and really enjoyed seeing the Christmas lights and decorations out.

With the rising numbers, January swiftly approaching and the gloom of wet, dark days, who's with me to ask everyone to keep the decorations up for January?

Mine are down

Snowiscold · 31/12/2021 08:18

I like the idea of keeping things up for Candlemas. Mine stay till 12th Night, but the tree has to go straight after that because the council do a tree-removal service but only for one week, though, so the tree has to go, ready for that.

Chipsahoy · 31/12/2021 08:26

We are moving house end of jan. my tree will be the last thing to be packed. At least if the rest of the house is a mess, my tree will look nice.

RememberThePenguins · 31/12/2021 08:31

Mine always comes down on new year's day because it's my daughter's birthday the following day and I think it's important that the two are separated.

Malibuismysecrethome · 31/12/2021 08:33

Not me, it’s unlucky past the 6th January which is the end of Epithany.

lollipoprainbow · 31/12/2021 08:40

My lovely real tree is as fresh as the day I got it so feel awful about getting rid of it next week although it is twelve night and should go.

EatAllDay · 31/12/2021 08:43

Couldn’t bear to look at it for another month. Will probably come down tomorrow

SirChenjins · 31/12/2021 08:46

I’ll join! The lights are the the only nice thing about January.

ChiefAdjusterOfRubensShorts · 31/12/2021 08:48

Mine will come down 2nd Jan, I’m sick of the sight of the bloody thing.

ElvenDreamer · 31/12/2021 08:49

We didn't put ours up until 19th, so yes, mine will be staying a bit longer yet, as other posters have said, up until candle mass is nice. Last year of course we were in lockdown again so we kept ours up until schools returned, so right into February too! Kept the Christmas spirit going and made it all a bit more palatable, amused the other kids in the teams lessons too.

wineandchocolateforthewin · 31/12/2021 08:51

Tree coming down on 2nd but i will be keeping some fairy lights such as cool white ones on my banister and a winter garland in my window, it helps cheer things up during January/February

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 31/12/2021 09:08

I read an article in the last couple of years about the Queen keeping hers up until Candlemas which wasn't something I'd heard of previously. Last year I left my crib up until then and I have lights round my front door all year round when I remember the batteries. I've got a Christmas village and I'm going to leave that up this year too. The tree would get in my way too much I think.

I do love seeing lights on people's houses. In the past I was a bit sniffy about people putting decorations up 'too soon'. Post lockdown/covid I'm happy seeing any expressions of joy and lights.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 31/12/2021 09:09

My birthday is in January and I get unreasonably angry about decorations still being up.

I would consider birthday decorations and everyone has pictures of my face hanging from their ceiling.

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 31/12/2021 09:18

I kept mine til candlemas last year, I'll definitely be keeping the lights and evergreens up until then this year, I love a bit of sparkle during the winter months.

Skyeheather · 31/12/2021 09:26

Ours are coming down 5 Jan, DC back at school on 6 Jan so it makes sense to take them down on the last day of the holidays so we can be back to normal the day after.

InTheLabyrinth · 31/12/2021 09:41

My tree will need to come down before 12th night, because the council will collect the tree with the bins on the 5th....
Otherwise I'll need to book an appointment at the tip, and that's just not happening!

Nyz9213 · 31/12/2021 10:03

No. Absolutely not.

The whole point of Christmas is that it’s special. I feel the same about putting decorations up in November. It erodes it somehow. Keeping them up 2/3 months is ridiculous and takes away the special-ness.

MsAgnesDiPesto · 31/12/2021 10:04

I struggle with new year and January in general, but mine will still come down before I start back at work towards the end of next week. I often do them on 31 Dec but this year we are both enjoying their cheer, so they will stay for a few more days.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 31/12/2021 10:06

Back in the loft by the 27th of December

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/12/2021 10:11

Last year I kept some indoor twinkly lights on until the clocks went forward. My daughter had hers up all year.

Prescottdanni123 · 31/12/2021 10:19

Xmas decorations don't mean the same thing to me after new year. However, last year some people took the Xmas baubles down and put valentines/spring decorations on the tree which was a nice touch.

BrioNotBiro · 31/12/2021 10:33

Mine went up on the 20th and was down on the 27th! I like to have the decks (and decs) cleared before New Year.

mafted · 31/12/2021 10:33

If I had plain lights up outside I'd happily keep them up but I couldn't keep the trees anything actually Christmassy up for so long. Our trees are real and are looking a bit sad now. Not sure they'll make it to the twelfth night, I often put different decorations on them for New Year's Eve but don't think they're up to it poor things!

Snowiscold · 31/12/2021 10:44

I have to get rid of the tree because of the council pick-up slot, but it is traditional to keep things up until Candlemas. The 12th Night thing is a more modern invention. I definitely keep vases of holly, Ivy, plus lights and some decorations up until then. I’m a traditionalist at heart. We only put tree up on Christmas Eve generally.

LethargicActress · 31/12/2021 10:48

The outside lights will be the last thing to go, but I’ve started packing things away now. I like to go into the new year with everything fresh and tidy.
