MN and their approach to autism

I have attached two screenshots. One showing the two threads I’m watching, the other the deletion message from the first watched thread which was deleted.

The subjects of the two threads are

(1) Any ‘positive’ autism stories?
(2) Married to someone with Asperger’s: support thread 5

My confusion is that the first was deleted because “the title was not in spirit of the site” Yet thread 2 - which has (IMO) a deeply offensive as it implies all people with Asperger’s are a problem in a relationship (leaving aside the ghastly ableism within the thread) is absolutely fine?

Thread 1 was from a concerned parent who may have used clunky wording but was looking for support - yet she has been deleted. Thread 2 is for concerned partners who can blame every poor behaviour of their partners on autism and that’s all fine?

As an autistic person this makes no sense to me at all and highlights not only ableism within MNHQ but also a deeply inconsistent approach to moderation?

(Have name changed as I’m a coward)

Only about 20% of autistic people are in employment, we are often prevented from accessing education, healthcare and the wider community. We have a suicide rate which is nine times higher than the general population. We die prematurely because we can't access healthcare and struggle to live a healthy lifestyle. We are frequently living in poverty. We experience abuse from family, friends, neighbours, the authorities and healthcare workers. We are often locked up and lose our human rights, sometimes for years.

All of you who pour scorn on us and try to minimise our struggles whilst centering yours, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

We are human beings.

Ironic much? This thread pretty much demonstrates how self centering many are, and yes its hugely ignorant.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 03/01/2022 15:59

This is a thread about autism of course the autistic people are going to centre our experiences. This is our experience, not yours. You do not get to tell us how we should feel about the ableist threads and posts on here.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 03/01/2022 16:00

Some of you are truly disgusting.

HerRoyalHappiness · 03/01/2022 16:02

why is it permitted to be offensive about autistic people? because we don't matter to most NTs. We're just autistic, our feelings aren't valid because they think we don't have feelings like them. It's frustrating.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 03/01/2022 16:10

We are not subhuman, the repeated attacks on autistic people should not be permitted on these boards. If it was happening to people of a different ethnicity, sexuality, disability or religion it wouldn't be permitted. It is damaging and harmful.

WE ARE NOT SUBHUMAN

Is this what you want to do with us? We deserve it I suppose judging by the nastiness we regularly encounter.

WE ARE NOT SUBHUMAN

This is what others are taking issue with. People with disabilities are attacked, in horrible ways, all the time. And there is constant racism on Mumsnet. Not to mention the fact that all these groups overlap - there are neurodiverse people in every other marginalised group and it's not right to assume (for example) that black people are 'other' and somehow 'outside' neurodiversity.

Rejoice! The workplace is yours.

GCAutist · 03/01/2022 16:20

@floyi conversely autistic people are also fully human and as capable with their 5 senses as the precious allistic (non autistic) people are. Within that we have people who are black, white, brown etc shocking!

We bring it on ourselves though.

If only we could act more neurotypical. Damn.

Get rid of us from school and the workplace and you've almost succeeded! Collect 100 points and go to the top of the class.

Top news NTs, if at first you don't succeed, you can always deny us healthcare!

Don't fear, you WILL prevail!

Literally.

Fill your boots and let the hatred flow MNHQ.......

We are the last people whom it's okay to demonise. Enjoy

RoosterTheRoost · 03/01/2022 16:33

The first thread shouldn’t have been deleted. Mnhq could have changed the title if they thought it was so offensive. No positivity of autism allowed here. 🙄
The 2nd thread title is horrible but mn doesn’t care about that.
I think people should have a forum where they can talk about and get support for their relationship problems but the relentless “he’s an abusive arsehole because he’s autistic” talk is horrible.

flippertyop · 03/01/2022 16:38

For some it's very hard being married to someone who is not neuro-typical. Why do you have an issue with a thread supporting people who are experiencing this. If it doesn't relate to you or you don't like it scroll on

Because it encourages and perpetuates harmful tropes about autistic people.

It blames all the difficulties in the marriage on autism.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 03/01/2022 16:47

Personally, I don't like NT people and they've been the bane of my life. I wouldn't start a thread dedicated to bashing NT people though.

I've met some nice NTs and some NTs I wouldn't spit on if they were on fire. Like those of us on the spectrum - you've met one NT; you've met one NT.

But I agree that they have made my life very very difficult.
