To be terrified for mark Zuckerberg's Metaverse?

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 28/12/2021 20:29

Have just watched his video about it today. The Metaverse seems to be a virtual 'place' where you can present yourself as an avatar and interact with other people's avatars in real time, without the barrier of a screen.

I think it sounds fucking ludicrous personally. Can you imagine what meta-munsnet would be like? I spoke to my husband about it and he thinks it will just be used by smutty people to do online shagging. Like an awful Black Mirror episode. He thinks Mark Zuckerberg is terribly naive about it being a positive way to build communities.

What do we all think?

Yabu- get with it and stop being such a tech dinosaur

Yanbu - we are all doomed, Charlie Brooker style

I can't get my head round why Zuckerberg thinks people will buy the notion that this will be an overwhelmingly positive development, given the downsides of the current social media culture.

TheHamburgler · 28/12/2021 20:33

On paper it sounds great.

Although I probably would have said the same about the internet and social media not so long ago, and now can’t help but wonder if we’d be better off without.

Silverswirl · 28/12/2021 20:37

Erm- did none of you ever play second life?

XenoBitch · 28/12/2021 20:39

Isn't this just VR? VR worlds have been around for ages, so this Meta thing is nothing new.

SparklyLeprechaun · 28/12/2021 20:40

It's not exactly a new concept, is it?

XenoBitch · 28/12/2021 20:42

@Silverswirl

Erm- did none of you ever play second life?
Exactly! I recall some people made real money on there by making digital items that people could wear etc. Second Life is still going AFAIK.
Swirlywoo · 28/12/2021 20:43

Doesn't appeal even remotely but then I have watched Black Mirror.

Emerald5hamrock · 28/12/2021 20:45

I think it will appeal to the younger generation.
We're doomed for a weird future.

HumunaHey · 28/12/2021 20:47

The whole world is seeming very Black Mirror-ish these days. I don't like it. Can we go back to the 90s please.

DopesickSis · 28/12/2021 20:51

It's Better Than Life from Red Dwarf, where people became addicted to their headsets and lived in the online world, imagining they were billionaires, kings and filmstars whilst they were wasting away in real life.

I wish VR was that advanced! I have a headset, but it is nowhere near as immersive as the stuff in sci-fi.
TheDrrWillSeeYouNow · 28/12/2021 20:59

Zuckerberg doesn't believe it's going to be a positive community building whatnot, he know's it is all about online shagging. He is a marketing genius who knows that no one will sign up for something that is overtly about online shagging.

It sounds like an idea which will result in some people being unable to function in the real world and/or checking out of their lives completely.

Silverswirl · 28/12/2021 21:06

Wait until the full VR body suits become available. 🤣

TrickorTreacle · 28/12/2021 21:08

Exactly this! 2nd Life has been around for nearly 20 years, which is well before social media. There is also World of Warcraft and the Sims Online, albeit they're only 2D avatars, not 3D.

There is also VR Chat which is 3D.

I don't think anything from Zuckerberg can be a good thing. He has created a space for influencers, MLM bots, narcissists and cancel culture.

Marzipano · 28/12/2021 21:09

I didn't vote, because I think it won't catch on. Although I know people said the same thing about the internet.

XenoBitch · 28/12/2021 21:12

I am thinking of the sex suits in the series 'Upload'. You have to wear them in a bathtub.
KangSaeByeok · 28/12/2021 21:19

It's more like Roblox. You can take your avatar to different meetings.

LadyIckenham · 28/12/2021 21:29

There's a whole different thread there about what a meta Mumsnet would be like!

TheOnceAndFutureQueen · 28/12/2021 21:34

When I first read about it, it made me think of the oasis in Ready Player One. I don't like the idea at all but am also a bit of a technophobe so probably not aimed at me

mumda · 28/12/2021 21:35

Do you remember second life?

MaryAndHerNet · 28/12/2021 21:37

It'll all go Futurama eventually.

AmorFati · 28/12/2021 21:42

Er, just don't use it?

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 28/12/2021 22:47

I've never ever heard of Second Life 😬; the name alone sounds shifty enough!

@AmorFati I get your point entirely but what will I do if everyone around me is using it and I'm left stood there with people walking into walls and doing weird internet shagging?

Same, I suspect it will go the same way as 3D tv. Sounds great but in reality turns out to be a bit shit and the original format offers the same without the side dose of disappointment.
