To be terrified for mark Zuckerberg's Metaverse?

Have just watched his video about it today. The Metaverse seems to be a virtual 'place' where you can present yourself as an avatar and interact with other people's avatars in real time, without the barrier of a screen.

I think it sounds fucking ludicrous personally. Can you imagine what meta-munsnet would be like? I spoke to my husband about it and he thinks it will just be used by smutty people to do online shagging. Like an awful Black Mirror episode. He thinks Mark Zuckerberg is terribly naive about it being a positive way to build communities.

What do we all think?

Well I had a charming dance with a robot earlier on DD’s headset. It’s not all bad.

First Steps? I love that app. I would love one where you could dance with different robots/animals any time.

I'm just picturing MySpace, but with badly designed 3D avatars instead of badly designed web pages (lots of cheap flashing effects and nauseating colour schemes).
That for the visuals. In term of content, I guess it will be more or less the same shite you can already read/hear on Facebook, TikTok and the like.

Most media technological advances have been used for porn, from the printing press onwards so I imagine the Metaverse will be the same. It doesn't mean it can't be useful for other things too.

I'm sceptical about how much I would use it going by what I've seen so far, but these things often end up being used and adapted in ways that the original designers never thought of. So I'll wait and see.

It would add a new dimension to dick pics, basically.

Online groping has been a thing for years. I have been groped online, but I can't get worked up about it. I only knew it happened because someone else told me. I didn't see it or feel it. Not a big deal. What is a big deal is how people speak to each other. I have heard young kids tell adults that they will rape them.

And as if work meetings weren’t bad enough, by 2025 we’ve potentially got the avatar of Derek from Accounts to contend with whilst we review the 2026 budget. Zoom will be so 2020 and we’ll all be encouraged to “be in the room”.

The plot of Year's and Years is coming true, we'll have people identifying as transhuman, and want to plugged into the Internet Matrix style.

What Mark doesn’t seem to have realised yet is you can create these platforms but you can’t control them. So he might imagine some amazing VR experience when it’ll just turn into a VR porn site. Obviously don’t know the guy but can’t imagine he wants that legacy even with the money it would bring. Whatever he imagined for FB has gone way beyond his wildest dreams and is now a beast of its own that won’t be tamed.
