Is Panettone the biggest waste of money

Every Christmas, stores have the most gorgeously packaged panettone, it feels impossible not to buy at least one. And the big ones don't come cheap. My gripe is that you open it and it's nothing but eggy, vanilla flavoured fruit bread in the shape of a cake. I've used it to make French toast and it's fine, but nothing you couldn't do with a simple fruit loaf from Tesco or M&S. Panettone - a rip-off or worth it?

I hate a whole mini panettone with my coffee this morning. I love them.

vera99 · 13/12/2021 12:11

I've always regarded them as mildly evil - looks like I was right.

megletthesecond · 13/12/2021 12:11

Mmm, buttered panettone.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/12/2021 12:12

I’ve never bought it. We were given one once, it was very dry and ended up on the bird table. Bread and butter pudding would have been a good idea!

I dare say there are much nicer ones, but I won’t be bothering to buy any.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 13/12/2021 12:13

I've loved them ever since I was a kid when you could only get them in Italy ( I'm Italian ) We dip them in tea !

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 13/12/2021 12:14

I love panettone, and buy one every year. I like having it for breakfast, especially on Christmas Day.

I have to confess, though, that I am also a sucker for nice packaging, and have in the past, chosen the panettone that came in the nice tin, because I wanted the tin, and knew the panettone wouldn't get wasted.

PeanuttyButter · 13/12/2021 12:15

Mmm toasted with butter.

HeadPain · 13/12/2021 12:15

I need some now to dip in my cup of tea

Fink · 13/12/2021 12:17

I've never had a nice one. Despite Italian in-laws telling me it's just because you don't get decent stuff in the UK and shipping over their local favourites. Nope, still don't like it. Fortunately, other people in the family go for it so it's not wasted.

Prescottdanni123 · 13/12/2021 12:18

I've had good panettone. Its not really my thing but I wouldn't call it a rip off. I think its a case of you either like it or you don't.

Corbally · 13/12/2021 12:18

Why would you 'feel it's impossible not to buy one' when you know you don't like panettone? Sure, buying one is a waste of money for you, but I don't see how this is down to anyone other than you.

I loathe Christmas pudding, but I don't make or buy one, or complain about them being a waste of money and/or time.

Songoftheseas · 13/12/2021 12:19

Panettone is delicious! You need to find a good one. I hate most traditional Christmas desserts so we always buy a lot of Panettone at Christmas 😋 M&S does some lovely ones.

HeadPain · 13/12/2021 12:20

As great as their food is the Italians just can't do cake.

I don't think it's meant to be cake. It's a bread, a sweet bread.

Laufeythejust · 13/12/2021 12:20

I love panettone it’s the kind of thing you don’t want until it’s open and then can’t stop eating.

M and S did a chocolate orange one last year that was the best thing ever but they seem to have discontinued it which has basically ruined Christmas

Els1e · 13/12/2021 12:21

I love it. A slice toasted, with a slosh of amaretto poured over and single cream. Delicious!

MrsBerthaRochester · 13/12/2021 12:21

I love Panettone but have never thought of having it with butter(runs to shops immediatly)

deathofastrawberry · 13/12/2021 12:22

I never buy the fruit one as I'm not really into fruit cake/loaf. The chocolate one however is amazing.. I ate a whole mini one the other evening Sad still yet to try the M&S triple chocolate one 🤤

79andnotout · 13/12/2021 12:22

I love them! The ones with pistachio cream in are my favourite. I felt the same way as you before I tasted really decent ones, though. I was put off by the supermarket ones of my childhood.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 13/12/2021 12:23

It's easy to fall into the trap of seeing lots of things as Christmas must-haves, but you can cut down your shopping a lot if you really think about what will give you pleasure and what you are buying for the sake of it.

InPraiseOfBacchus · 13/12/2021 12:25

I agree OP, but only because I have strange tastes and think that dried ruit in baked goods is the work of the devil himself! The texture! Bleurgh!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 13/12/2021 12:27

...it's nothing but eggy, vanilla flavoured fruit bread in the shape of a cake.

You say that like it's a bad thing!

JavaQ · 13/12/2021 12:27

Costa sells mini ones which are nice.
