To not have wanted to pay for the wrong fuel.

Today I went to fill up my car. Went into pay (non pay at the pump) and asked to pay for number 4. She asks 'you mean number 3' and I said 'no number 4' and pointed to my car at number 4.

She then tells me a guy has just paid for number 4 and points to the guy getting into car at number 3 next to my car. She said that I will have to pay for his even though he'd bought food etc with his his fuel too. Turns out it was only £5 more than mine so not the end of the world, but I didn't feel right paying for the wrong fuel and dp is currently off with covid and on SSP so money is extremely tight. I'm double jabbed and negative and needed fuel after using so much going to and from test centres all week!

She calls red car owner at number 3 back at tannoy. He doesn't hear and calls for a member of staff to go grab him but no one did. He wasn't rushing off thankfully so I went to grab him. The man was very apologetic and paid the difference, so non issue after all.

So it ended up a non issue. But if the red car had driven off faster then he did the staff would have wanted me to for his. Like I said it was only £5 more but what if he had a massive car and filled up with £100 worth of fuel? Make me pay then?!

I'm not sure who was it at fault. Whether the guy thought he was pump number 4 even though the numbers are very clear or whatever the staff did it wrong.

Either way aibu to not want to pay for another pumps fuel?

I still would have done the same say if guys fuel was less and he paid more for mine. I would have paid him the difference!

YANBU. I wouldn't have paid more than what I used even if it was "only" a fiver. It wasn't your mistake.

bestdhever · 11/12/2021 11:14

I would have offered to pay the same amount that I had put in originally and that's it. I wouldn't pay for something I don't have. Yanbu I wouldn't be your fault

Landof · 11/12/2021 11:14

Omg no, yanbu at all!!! That's disgraceful. They can't expect a random member of the public to pay for their mistake!

Wannakisstheteacher · 11/12/2021 11:14

I’m glad you got in that you are double jabbed 😂

Clymene · 11/12/2021 11:14

Of course you shouldn't have paid! It wasn't anything to do with you.

Sparklfairy · 11/12/2021 11:14

Wow she was pulling a fast one! She made a mistake and tried to use you to cover her arse.

ImAGreenToothbrush · 11/12/2021 11:15

That's really odd! You pay for pump 4 if that's what you used. It's their loss if they don't check. I have occasionally wondered what would happen if you accidentally told them the wrong number though.

Lockheart · 11/12/2021 11:15

No that's not correct and I'd be speaking to the manager about training (not in a nasty or complaining way, sometimes new / untrained staff panic and make mistakes).

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 11/12/2021 11:16

Was this a big chain? If so I would complain. You shouldn't be out of pocket for someone else's mistake.
If it happened again, I'd be saying 'no, I'll pay for the fuel I've actually taken but nothing else, call the police if you don't like that and we'll see what they say'.

WorraLiberty · 11/12/2021 11:16

This ^^ has literally nothing to do with anything Confused

Of course you shouldn't pay for petrol you haven't had. The staff member was trying it on.

This.

Garages have drive offs and people paying the wrong amount all of the time. They can easily make attempts to get the money back through the registration plate.

Redcrayons · 11/12/2021 11:17

What kind of crazy logic is that? It’s got nothing to do with you.

GiltEdges · 11/12/2021 11:19

YANBU... although I'm confused about what being double jabbed has to do with anything Confused

YouveBeenLittUp · 11/12/2021 11:19

Probably mentioning double jabbed as she didn't need to isolate as double jabbed. If she wasn't double jabbed shouldn't see be isolating so that's why it's mentioned?

girlmom21 · 11/12/2021 11:20

You should only pay for what you spent.

If you'd have refused to pay because your fuel had already been paid for they wouldn't have had a leg to stand on - although that might have been a dick move Grin

SusieBob · 11/12/2021 11:25

Absolutely not would you have to pay extra. That's the staff totally pulling a fast one.

I'd be sending a message to the garage owners.

Coronachristmas21 · 11/12/2021 11:25

@Wannakisstheteacher

I’m glad you got in that you are double jabbed 😂
Oh god. Nothing in that at all. I just wasn't in the mood for a faff at the petrol station after a week from hell. First time I've been out in days after 3 negative covid tests 😅😅

No chance! Unless I was paying less! Their mistake, their problem! I would of had a standoff with the manager and failing that put down what I had spent and walked off

GrumpyLivesInMyHouseNow · 11/12/2021 11:32

YANBU the staff at the petrol station was just being lazy, not wanting the hassle of refunding and recharging etc.

Yuledo · 11/12/2021 11:33

@Sparklfairy

Wow she was pulling a fast one! She made a mistake and tried to use you to cover her arse.
This.

No way would I pay. I’d have stood there creating Merry hell.

Summersdreaming · 11/12/2021 11:35

Thank goodness you were double jabbed, the situation could have been much worse. I bet the chap at pump 3 was an unvaxxed too Wink

PatriotCanes · 11/12/2021 11:37

When someone says something so bizarre that you are left thinking you must be missing something. Of course you don't pay for random guy's fuel. No matter how many jabs you've had.

womaninatightspot · 11/12/2021 11:39

I went into the garage and someone had paid for my fuel and driven off. I think there was 9 quid difference but they just put a transaction through for the exact amount I'd used and said they'd try and contact the other driver. Which is what should happen tbh

2Rebecca · 11/12/2021 11:43

I had this before and insisted on paying for my fuel. The food stuff makes no sense as even if he'd quoted the wrong pump number they would have added his shop stuff on top of his fuel so he should have still paid for that. I don't understand how food hadn't been paid for
