To not have wanted to pay for the wrong fuel.

Coronachristmas21 · 11/12/2021 11:11

Today I went to fill up my car. Went into pay (non pay at the pump) and asked to pay for number 4. She asks 'you mean number 3' and I said 'no number 4' and pointed to my car at number 4.

She then tells me a guy has just paid for number 4 and points to the guy getting into car at number 3 next to my car. She said that I will have to pay for his even though he'd bought food etc with his his fuel too. Turns out it was only £5 more than mine so not the end of the world, but I didn't feel right paying for the wrong fuel and dp is currently off with covid and on SSP so money is extremely tight. I'm double jabbed and negative and needed fuel after using so much going to and from test centres all week!

She calls red car owner at number 3 back at tannoy. He doesn't hear and calls for a member of staff to go grab him but no one did. He wasn't rushing off thankfully so I went to grab him. The man was very apologetic and paid the difference, so non issue after all.

So it ended up a non issue. But if the red car had driven off faster then he did the staff would have wanted me to for his. Like I said it was only £5 more but what if he had a massive car and filled up with £100 worth of fuel? Make me pay then?!

I'm not sure who was it at fault. Whether the guy thought he was pump number 4 even though the numbers are very clear or whatever the staff did it wrong.

Either way aibu to not want to pay for another pumps fuel?

I still would have done the same say if guys fuel was less and he paid more for mine. I would have paid him the difference!

Fuck that.
You were right to say no.
She just wanted her till to balance. I'd have said I'm paying for what I put in. If you want the extra fiver you pay it yourself.

Coronachristmas21 · 11/12/2021 11:43

@Summersdreaming

Thank goodness you were double jabbed, the situation could have been much worse. I bet the chap at pump 3 was an unvaxxed too Wink
Whether you are vaccinated was not my intention or not in this post, apologies if it sounds like that. I was just setting the scene that I had to get fuel as had used so much going to and from test centres but I do not have to isolate so went into the fuel station! 💕

WTF?!! This is so bizarre!

I thought this post was going to be about how you had accidentally put petrol in your diesel and were pissed off that you had to pay not just for the wrong fuel, but also for the cost of having it drained and then for the cost of yet another tank of the correct fuel. Because this happened to me a couple of years ago (it was a new car and I forgot it was a diesel Blush) and yes it was a bloody expensive and frustrating mistake!

But I cannot believe someone had the cheek yo expect you to pay for someone else's fuel!

ThePlantsitter · 11/12/2021 11:46

I think the mistake would probably come out of her wages which is why she was trying to get you to pay for it. Bloody cheek though, of course you shouldn't!!

lottiegarbanzo · 11/12/2021 11:48

Of course they can't charge you someone else's bill! That would literally be stealing.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 11/12/2021 11:50

I think I'd have to tweet the brand to tell them what happened. They made a mistake and tried to make you cover for it. That's not on.
Like you say, what if the difference had been £20/30/40. And the cashier had told you to pay for it. Not OK.

They need to revire the policy with staff members in that branch. Retrain them on how to handle a mistake like that. It will be in their policy somewhere. They cant pass mistakes on to the next customer and make you pay for it.

Tweet them or email their customer services and ask them to sort that out with that branch.

Helpstopthepain · 11/12/2021 11:51

Do they ask for vaccine passports at garages now?

CharityDingle · 11/12/2021 11:53

Bizarre. It happened to me one time, but after a bit of faffing about, the cashier was able to bring up the correct amount that I needed to pay.

I don't know whether the guy who had paid for the wrong pump, had paid more or less than I did. But I definitely would not have paid anything other than what I owed.

Allywill · 11/12/2021 11:53

i had this happen to me in a tesco petrol station. she was most put out i wouldn’t pay more than i had put in. she huffed “i’ll have to make up the difference from petty cash” i just said ok then and waited until it was sorted. totally strange thing to ask someone to do.

Fatgalslim · 11/12/2021 11:54

@Helpstopthepain

Do they ask for vaccine passports at garages now?
She's explained a few times why she said this if you bother yourself reading her posts.
LindaEllen · 11/12/2021 11:57

No. You pay for your own fuel. It's not your fault that the other man accidentally said the wrong number. You absolutely do not need to rectify their mistake at your expense.

Thankfully it was a non issue in the end, but I would get in touch with whoever manages that petrol station and explain the situation you'd been put in - to make sure it doesn't happen to other people!

CaptainHammer · 11/12/2021 11:58

@Helpstopthepain

No but she said her DP is off with Covid so you know people would have been freaking out that she went in to a public place.

Jeez the amount of people that somehow manage to not read a post properly but also read too much in to something is mad.

OP good you didn’t have to pay and ridiculous she asked you to in the first place!

Summersdreaming · 11/12/2021 12:00

@Coronachristmas21 I was being lighthearted don't worry.

And YANBU about the fuel.

SmellyOldOwls · 11/12/2021 12:01

A petrol station near me makes staff pay if people fill up and drive off, so she was maybe trying to get you to pay so her till wouldn't be short then she would have had to pay it!!

Coronachristmas21 · 11/12/2021 12:01

I wish I never mentioned the covid and vaccine bit but I'm an over explainer by nature and setting the scene 😅 it was the first time I'd been out in days and felt like a mini holiday!

I'm not even sure what petrol station it is. It's changed hands recently and newly opened and I didn't think to look 🤯

AdobeWanKenobi · 11/12/2021 12:14

OP you'd never win here. If you didn't mention you'd been vaccinated and were negative, the obtuse of MN would have asked why you were out and about with a Covid positive DH and because you mentioned the usual suspects will ask why you mentioned it.

It's amusing in it's stupidity really.

luverlybubberly · 11/12/2021 12:16

Yanbu
I would not really at for more than I wanted.

nannybeach · 11/12/2021 12:19

Had this in Sainsbury's. Gave pump number she told me I had already paid, so technically I could have just driven off. Then turned out some bloke had paid giving my pump number,they managed to chase him. What ensued was an absolute nightmare, I was needing to be somewhere,no one had a clue how to process the mistake

Peas252 · 11/12/2021 12:23

I'm not sure how you would have paid for his food, as that would have been added on to pump 4s total?

repottingthescabious · 11/12/2021 12:25

@Sparklfairy

Wow she was pulling a fast one! She made a mistake and tried to use you to cover her arse.
yep!
Chocolatewheatos · 11/12/2021 12:25

Ugh god. Is "I'm double jabbed" the new "I'm a critical worker"?

No you shouldn't have paid for his fuel. If he didn't come back you pay how much your fuel costs. The difference is her problem.

GiantHaystacks2021 · 11/12/2021 12:25

It was her fault but she wanted you to pay for it.
Cheeky cow.

gsaoej · 11/12/2021 12:30

Straight up thieving from the petrol station!

If they couldn't catch the man, they should have charged you for yours and then written off the £5 difference! Maybe you should have told the cashier that if it was so little, that she could give you the £5 from her own purse. See how little it was then!

pigsDOfly · 11/12/2021 12:32

Don't worry about the double jabbed bit OP.

Those of us who can read a post in a sensible way and take the relevant details from it understand why you waffled a bit Grin and won't nit pick.

Just ignore the posters who feel the need to ignore the gist of the post and nit pick.

Of course you shouldn't have paid for someone else's fuel.

Teeturtle · 11/12/2021 12:33

I don’t even understand why this is an issue. I am not paying for somebody’s else’s petrol, end of discussion. They can call the police on me if they like.

I am utterly baffled as to what this has to do with being double jabbed and why you have been driving to and from test centres all week. DH had booster yesterday, me last week, two local drives didn’t impact our petrol situation and even if it did, it still doesn’t mean we have it pay for somebody else’s petrol. This post is nonsensical.
