To not have wanted to pay for the wrong fuel.

Coronachristmas21 · 11/12/2021 11:11

Today I went to fill up my car. Went into pay (non pay at the pump) and asked to pay for number 4. She asks 'you mean number 3' and I said 'no number 4' and pointed to my car at number 4.

She then tells me a guy has just paid for number 4 and points to the guy getting into car at number 3 next to my car. She said that I will have to pay for his even though he'd bought food etc with his his fuel too. Turns out it was only £5 more than mine so not the end of the world, but I didn't feel right paying for the wrong fuel and dp is currently off with covid and on SSP so money is extremely tight. I'm double jabbed and negative and needed fuel after using so much going to and from test centres all week!

She calls red car owner at number 3 back at tannoy. He doesn't hear and calls for a member of staff to go grab him but no one did. He wasn't rushing off thankfully so I went to grab him. The man was very apologetic and paid the difference, so non issue after all.

So it ended up a non issue. But if the red car had driven off faster then he did the staff would have wanted me to for his. Like I said it was only £5 more but what if he had a massive car and filled up with £100 worth of fuel? Make me pay then?!

I'm not sure who was it at fault. Whether the guy thought he was pump number 4 even though the numbers are very clear or whatever the staff did it wrong.

Either way aibu to not want to pay for another pumps fuel?

I still would have done the same say if guys fuel was less and he paid more for mine. I would have paid him the difference!

@AdobeWanKenobi

OP you'd never win here. If you didn't mention you'd been vaccinated and were negative, the obtuse of MN would have asked why you were out and about with a Covid positive DH and because you mentioned the usual suspects will ask why you mentioned it.

It's amusing in it's stupidity really.

Except even the positive DH wasn't in any way relevant to the story 🤷🏼‍♀️
WomanStanleyWoman · 11/12/2021 12:36

It’s their mistake and they’re trying to make you pay for it. Fuck that.

It reminds me of the time a barman snatched a note from me without noticing I was giving him coins too. He knocked them into the drip tray as he was grabbing the note and then had the nerve to say ‘You’ll have to give me that again; otherwise it’ll come out of my tips’! Wanker.

Samedaysame · 11/12/2021 12:39

Could give a few unscrupulous people an idea how to get a tank full of fuel for quite a lot less....

MzHz · 11/12/2021 12:41

I drove off having paid the wrong pump, turned round, went back and gave the woman the £10 in cash difference

I didn't think of that... tbf initially I thought it was the guy who had said the wrong number but with the pumps and numbers quite clearly outside, I think it may of been the staff member who charged him for the wrong fuel. Plus we don't know how much the person next to us putting in so not worth the risk imo. He was the other side of the pump I was using - so he couldn't see what I was putting in!

Absolutely YANBU. It was either his or their mistake not yours. I'd have demanded the manager.

Coronachristmas21 · 11/12/2021 12:44

@Teeturtle I'm an over explainer by nature. Test centre is 10-15 miles away. Been a few times with the kids and myself so had used a lot of fuel. Was nearly on fumes - probably shouldn't have mentioned it. But like I said - over explainer! After a shit week I just didn't want any fuss in the petrol station 😅

I accidentally once paid for the wrong pump and it was less than mine. I realised days later went back and paid the difference. It was sainsbury's and they was amazed I had gone back.

Surely legally it's the shops issue to resolve? I think the person serving was making it up as they went as too lazy to call a manager

Does this help with your comprehension?

dp is currently off with covid and on SSP so money is extremely tight

That from the OP, explaining why she would have struggled to pay the extra money. Very relevant.

ancientgran · 11/12/2021 12:58

I pay at the pump which is fast and convenient but I hadn't realised it could also mean I wasn't expected to pay for someone else's fuel. I wouldn't be happy to pay for someone else's fuel and in fact I wouldn't. What are they going to do? I don't think the police would expect me to pay.

Tal45 · 11/12/2021 12:59

@Sparklfairy

Wow she was pulling a fast one! She made a mistake and tried to use you to cover her arse.
Exactly this! If she insisted you pay then you should have told her you're not paying someone else's bill and suggest she call the police.
MajorCarolDanvers · 11/12/2021 13:02

YANBU

Absolutely the fuck up of the petrol station. You should only have had to pay for what you bought.

NewMum0305 · 11/12/2021 13:03

Oh my goodness, what is wrong with people. OP mentioned that her DH is sick with Covid and on SSP, so money is tight - that’s relevant to the post. She then said she was double jabbed to preempt all the poster who would no doubt demand to know why she was out and about at the petrol station with a Covid-positive spouse. It’s really not that complicated!

OP, no way in hell would I have paid for someone else’s petrol. What if you had gone in for £10 worth and he had filled a £80 tank?? I’m glad it got sorted in the end -YADNBU

ChiefStockingStuffer · 11/12/2021 13:18

YANBU

We always fuel when we're down to half a tank. No way would I have paid for someone else's petrol bill ... I can only imagine what that would cost for some of these giant cars putting in a full tank of petrol!

Jaxhog · 11/12/2021 13:24

Whether the petrol station was at fault or the guy or it was just a mistake, YOU were not at fault. So you absolutely should not have been asked to pay for someone else's petrol etc.! Glad you were able to catch the guy but, again, it shouldn't have been up to you to do that.

I wouldn't go back to that petrol station and would write to their HQ and complain.

AgentDavid · 11/12/2021 13:34

@cheeseismydownfall

WTF?!! This is so bizarre!

I thought this post was going to be about how you had accidentally put petrol in your diesel and were pissed off that you had to pay not just for the wrong fuel, but also for the cost of having it drained and then for the cost of yet another tank of the correct fuel. Because this happened to me a couple of years ago (it was a new car and I forgot it was a diesel Blush) and yes it was a bloody expensive and frustrating mistake!

But I cannot believe someone had the cheek yo expect you to pay for someone else's fuel!

This was my first thought, which of course you would have to pay for.

In this situation, though, not a chance!! Your contractual obligation to pay was removed as your pump was paid for, I believe. It would actually have been a nicety to pay for your pump (which I would have offered to do but would have threatened to walk away if they didn't stop asking me to pay for the other pump)

liveforsummer · 11/12/2021 15:44

The fact he had food was irrelevant. That went on to his bill not on to the pump you were left to pay for. I suppose I'd have paid for the amount I'd put on my car and left them to chase the other fiver

BarbaraofSeville · 11/12/2021 16:07

@Wannakisstheteacher

I’m glad you got in that you are double jabbed 😂
It's the only way on MN. If you mention buying anything at all that's nice and non essential, you have to include an acknowlegment of how fortunate you are. If you admit to eating at McDonalds, you have to explain that it's very much a one off and was in extreme circumstances.

Yet strangely, it's fine to talk about buying a large period house in a desirable village or inner London within catchment of the best available school, that 99% of the country could not possibly afford, because that's not privilege, that's essential for work and/or prioritising education, of course.

Back to the OP, this happened to me once, and I do wonder if it happens quite a lot and people don't always notice. I fill cars for work and never take any notice of how much it is because it's not my money and I'm irritated that I have to fill the car every time I use it, so I'd have no idea if I was paying for someone else's fuel who'd bought £20 or so more than I had.

Or with my own car, I typically fill it up when it's empty and pay by card, and don't really notice, so I might pay more attention from now on.

She's a CF and you were absolutely correct not to accept it.
Coronachristmas21 · 11/12/2021 16:32

Thanks all. Been driving for many years and had never experienced a mix ups before. I quite often use pay attention the pump or get Dp to fill up though 😅

This ^^ has literally nothing to do with anything*

Of course it's relevant. The fact OP's is currently on SSP sets the scale of how valuable a fiver is to them right now. Otherwise you'd have plenty of people coming on and saying they wouldn't quibble over just a fiver.

The double jabbed and negative, whilst not relevant to the fuel story, is necessary to pre-empt the self appointed covid police who will come along and chastise OP for going out when her DP has covid.

Is it bollocks relevant.

Are you seriously saying you'd happily pay an extra fiver for your fuel because the garage can't be arsed charging customers for the correct fuel pump?

In fact, why bother trying to keep track at all. They could just spin a wheel when you go in there to choose what pump you pay for.

Suzanne999 · 11/12/2021 17:08

They can only charge you for what you have had.
You can’t go into Tesco and pay for someone’s basket of shopping and expect them to pay for your trolley.
You were in the right, garage staff in the wrong.

^^ definitely tried her luck and won

ClumpyMascara · 12/12/2021 19:06

There’s no way in hell I’d pay more than what I had put in my car. It wasn’t your mistake!
