This Tuesday or Next Tuesday

Light hearted argument with DS(9)

If you were talking about Tuesday 14th December would you say
This Tuesday (Me - vote YANBU)
Next Tuesday (DS - vote YABU)
Thanks!

I would say ‘this’ for the week the Tuesday is in and ‘next’ if it was in the next week. So Tuesday 14th is next week so next Tuesday. Tuesday 7th was this week. That’s my logic anyway 🤷‍♀️😂

RoRoYoYo · 08/12/2021 22:40

It's next Tuesday as it's the next Tuesday coming. This Tuesday was yesterday. Your DS is right!

Thorilicious · 08/12/2021 22:42

@RoRoYoYo nooooo, he can't be right, I'll never hear the end of it!! Grin

He's right. It's definitely next week

Heruka · 08/12/2021 22:43

Hmm, tricky. Both are kind of correct but I’d probably only use ‘this’ Tuesday when closer to it than 6 days away. So for you would next Tuesday be the 21st? That’s not right!

ForbiddentoForbid · 08/12/2021 22:45

I'd say next Tuesday because it's next week.

Aimee1987 · 08/12/2021 22:45

Another one siding with your son sorry op

BurntO · 08/12/2021 22:45

Next Tuesday is next week. That’s the NEXT Tuesday. This Tuesday has passed.

LadyCatStark · 08/12/2021 22:46

He’s right. You can say this Tuesday on Monday.

butterupbuttercup · 08/12/2021 22:46

I think I would say 'Tuesday next week', if talking about it on a Wednesday.

'This Tuesday' is technically correct, and I would probably say that from Friday onwards... but when you're only just past the Tuesday for the current week, 'this Tuesday' could sound like the Tuesday just gone.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 08/12/2021 22:46

I think either is right!

Sparklfairy · 08/12/2021 22:47

Id say this Tuesday.

Might be a regional thing but we say "this Tuesday coming or the next Tuesday?"

TheOneWithTwoParties · 08/12/2021 22:48

If you said “this Tuesday coming” I’d say you were right. But otherwise it’s next Tuesday. Weirdly my daughter and I had this same disagreement over my saying “next weekend” meaning Sat 18th versus her thinking next weekend was whatever the date is on Saturday.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 08/12/2021 22:49

I would say ‘this’ for this week and ‘next’ for next week, so Tuesday next week is ‘next Tuesday.’ Although I admit it becomes a bit trickier at the weekend, up until Friday I would definitely say ‘next Tuesday’ and from Monday it’s ‘this Tuesday’ but over the weekend both could probably be used!

Honeypickle · 08/12/2021 22:49

Next

Notimeforaname · 08/12/2021 22:50

He's right.

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 08/12/2021 22:50

This Tuesday has been and gone, however the next Tuesday is.. we'll next Tuesday Grin

Wooky8 · 08/12/2021 22:53

I would say "this coming Tuesday" to try to reduce confusion!

StormyCornishSeas · 08/12/2021 22:58

Next Tuesday until like Saturday or Sunday then it can be this Tuesday

The one I don't get is "Tuesday Week"

Forgetaboutme · 08/12/2021 23:02

I once got lines in school for this. The teacher said homework was due 'next tuesday'. I thought that meant not Tuesday coming but the Tuesday after. I wasn't the only one. For that reason i now just clarify the date.

sycamorescrumptious · 08/12/2021 23:02

Just Tuesday surely? Anything else makes it too confusing!

RainbowBabyForChristmasPlease · 08/12/2021 23:02

Next Tuesday

Kite22 · 08/12/2021 23:09

Next, as it is next week and seems like a long way away.
"This" implies something that is "here", sort of in front of you.

Of course if it were a crucial meeting or appointment then I would clarify by adding the date, but general conversation it would be fairly apparent due to context anyway, more often than not.

ClareBlue · 08/12/2021 23:09

Since missing a meeting at work due to confusion on this I always say date after in a work situation.
I agree that it depends on where you are in the week.

WheekestLink · 08/12/2021 23:12

I was with you @Thorilicious but upon reading these responses I have come to realise that I have been wrong my whole life. It actually goes some (not all the) way to explaining why people look at my with confusion when I speak.
