Light hearted argument with DS(9)

If you were talking about Tuesday 14th December would you say
This Tuesday (Me - vote YANBU)
Next Tuesday (DS - vote YABU)
Thanks!

Next Tuesday... Because it's, well, the next Tuesday Xmas Grin

Chloemol · 08/12/2021 23:40

Next

ShowOfHands · 08/12/2021 23:48

There's never a consensus on next this.

22Giraffes · 08/12/2021 23:53

Your son is right! This for any day left in the current week, and next for any day in the forthcoming week starting from Monday.

MeanderingGently · 09/12/2021 00:00

'This' is this week, 'next' is next week. Next Tuesday is next week as it's already Wednesday this week....

Lalliella · 09/12/2021 00:29

If today was Sunday 12th or Monday 13th I’d say that Tue 14 would be this Tuesday. Before that Tue 14 would be next Tuesday.

wildthingsinthenight · 09/12/2021 00:33

Your son is right

Chely · 09/12/2021 00:43

I did xxx Tuesday (7th)
I'm going to do xxx Tuesday (14th)
I'm going to see xxx next Tuesday (21st)

I state dates most of the time.

Thorilicious · 09/12/2021 07:44

I can't believe I need to tell my son he's right. Thank you all for clarifying!

I've just told him, and he's very happy he's smarter than MummyGrin

Next Tuesday because... it's the NEXT Tuesday we'll have. Next week. Not this week. This Tuesday was a couple of days ago.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 09/12/2021 15:44

What would "next Tuesday" be to you then OP? Tuesday 21st?!

He's definitely right, sorry Grin

madisonbridges · 09/12/2021 15:46

"Next Tuesday" becomes "this Tuesday" on Sunday!

Chocolatewheatos · 09/12/2021 15:47

Tuesday coming.

WilmaJean · 09/12/2021 15:51

Next means nearest (as in in the future) so he is right

RandomLondoner · 09/12/2021 17:15

Next means nearest (as in in the future) so he is right

Not necessarily. It's not clear (or even fixed) what "next" is relative to.

Proof that you are wrong: if I said I was going to see you next Friday, would you think I meant tomorrow?

RandomLondoner · 09/12/2021 17:20

There is no reason to use "next" in relation to the nearest Tuesday, you would just say "I will see you on Tuesday." (Or "I saw him on Tuesday" if referring to the past.)

WilmaJean · 09/12/2021 18:01

The etymology of the word next is from the old English for Nearest.

Saracen · 10/12/2021 01:26

@WilmaJean

The etymology of the word next is from the old English for Nearest.
So if today is Wednesday then "next Tuesday" refers to yesterday? That being the nearest Tuesday Grin
Notjustanymum · 10/12/2021 06:33

I wouldn’t use “this Tuesday”, but next and last (or today, if it’s Tuesday now). I might, however, sometimes use “this coming Tuesday” interchangeably with next, and “Tuesday week”, if today is Sunday and I’m referring to the Tuesday after next.
I think that using “this” for a day that is in the past is misleading…

TinySaltLick · 10/12/2021 06:44

This Tuesday, and Next Tuesday, mean the same thing. The first following Tuesday moving time forwards.

I think the concept referred to by op is 'week Tuesday'. Eg a whole week from today before then considering the Next Tuesday. Although in this instance I would always add additional clarification around date or description of the intervening time period.

As an aside saying This Tuesday to mean the past is completely wrong and not how anyone uses the term. That would be Last Tuesday.

chatw0o0 · 10/12/2021 07:06

If today is Friday, I will talk about just 'Tuesday' or perhaps 'this coming Tuesday'. If I want to talk about Tuesday 21st, I either call it the 21st or will be really annoying and say 'Tuesday after next'.

Have been in too many conversations where people are using this Tue/next Tue/Tue week,/three Tue from now...and so on... I try to use the date when it's not super clear (ie, talking to my partner who never seems to know what bl**dy day it is anyway).

megletthesecond · 10/12/2021 07:09

I'd say next Tuesday. The weekend is in the way first.

sheiselectric · 10/12/2021 07:13

You are correct! Or at least in my eyes you are haha. Most people I know and I say it how you do. I wonder if it depends where you are from...I am from an Irish background and most of the people I work with are too.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 10/12/2021 07:15

It all depends how you see the week, as a rolling 7 day period or as 7 says start Ming on a Monday.

I always use the date to avoid mix ups.
