Does the second lateral flow test look positive?

boobood · 05/12/2021 16:24

Sorry I know this isn't AIBU but posting here for traffic.

DH tested positive via PCR on Friday. Did lateral flow on both DD's today. Top one is husbands positive lateral flow (did it more to check the lateral flow tests worked as been doing them for months and never had a positive result before). Checked both DD's lateral flows and they appeared negative. Just glanced now and it appears one of them is positive (the middle test)?? Did the test about an hour ago. Is the result invalid due to the length of time taking the test or do you think it's positive?

DD currently has no symptoms do you think I should do a PCR on her? She is extremely clinically vulnerable but it's an absolute nightmare getting her to take a test.

Thanks

Middle one looks positive, or like its starting to be. I'd get her retested if you can.

gobbynorthernbird · 05/12/2021 16:27

It certainly looks positive. Can you do another LFT and see how that looks after 30 mins?

Franklin12 · 05/12/2021 16:27

Yes, I think there is a faint line on the second test.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/12/2021 16:27

We’ve never had a positive LFT and never had a second line at any time after they were taken.

There is definitely a second line on the middle test but if it was an hour after it was taken I’m not sure of the significance. I guess to be sure you ought to get that person a PCR.

ExplodingCarrots · 05/12/2021 16:28

Middle one is positive . Even though the time is over I'd still her a PCR. I know it's a nightmare with kids . We had 20 minute stand off with DD at the test centre the other day. She's positive too.

Bessica1970 · 05/12/2021 16:28

Difficult to tell if it’s a positive line or a trailing liquid line.
Is it a different person from the top test?
You could do it again for more clarification, but if you’re all the same household you all need PCRs anyway.

Bessica1970 · 05/12/2021 16:30

Sorry didn’t see that the top one was your husband.
Regardless you should all have a PCR now.

boobood · 05/12/2021 16:31

Yes it's a different person from the top test.
Top test is husband who is definitely covid positive- confirmed with PCR.

Middle test is DD- no symptoms but ecv.

Bottom test is other DD- who actually has a bit of a temp. She has had a PCR but waiting for the result.

When I first did the middle test, it was completely negative. No sign at all of a second line. Left them on the coffee table and just checked and now appears to have a line. Going to have to get her PCR tested. So worried and stressed

Do it again, you are meant to check 15/30 minutes depending on the type of test. I have looked at a test which were negative at the right time and then there has been a line a few hours later not always inline with the T, so assume it is something to do with the dye

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/12/2021 16:32

Hope you can get a PCR for her tonight so you’re not left wondering for too long.

simpledeer · 05/12/2021 16:32

Middle is positive and yes, don't you have to have PCR now if DH positive?

dementedpixie · 05/12/2021 16:32

The 'line' isn't in the right place and looks more like colour run

Chemenger · 05/12/2021 16:33

You’re not meant to read them after a certain time, I think it’s 30 minutes. The result at the test time is the result. I would repeat it and follow the instructions about when to read the result.

PasDevantLesElephants · 05/12/2021 16:33

I've had tests which have a slight line after an hour or two, but never Covid as far as I'm aware. If the line doesn't show up within 1/2 an hour, I thinks it's invalid but I'd keep a close eye on her as it's in the house!

polkadotpjs · 05/12/2021 16:34

I think it's a smudge as the line is in a different place but I'd definitely retest and do a PCR

Sparklybanana · 05/12/2021 16:35

The middle one is not positive - its a tide mark where all the dye has collected. There is a little mark where the test line is so I would be cautious and retest in a couple of days.

Smurf123 · 05/12/2021 16:36

Surely you have to do a pcr on her anyway because of husbands positive? (You do here in ni asap and day 2 and 8) So no point doing another lft just go do the pcr.

Chemenger · 05/12/2021 16:37

Just checked the instructions on ours and it says “Do not read the result after 30 minutes.” (their emphasis) twice, once under the heading “Important”.

Kippersfortea · 05/12/2021 16:38

First positive, second hard to tell (retest), third negative

Clarkey86 · 05/12/2021 16:57

I agree with this. The lines are always in exactly the same place as your husbands and the middle one is too low - it’s just where it’s been flooded and the dye has run/pooled.

Can you do another LTF and put less liquid in?

InTheLabyrinth · 05/12/2021 17:05

I'd say the line is in the wrong place on the middle one. Given it was also clear at 30 miss, I don't think you can rely on it.
Since testing her is a nightmare I'd PCR tomorrow or Tuesday but treat as positive until that comes back.

freddiethegreat · 05/12/2021 17:09

I think that’s the dye pooling. This is mine today, done out of curiosity. I was stronger than your husband’s last Mon, confirmed by PCR. This is today & whilst you might need to zoom in to see it, there is just about a very faint line - at the same place as on your husband’s (& on all other +ve ones I have seen, including my own).

The line is in the wrong place.

I find it helpful to just throw away after 30m. If no line at that point, it’s negative.

Incidentally had our first ever positive lft today. DS2 has no symptoms but the line came up almost immediately.

This^ the line isn’t in the right place. Do another lateral flow and check after correct amount of time has lapsed.
Bigoldhag · 05/12/2021 17:17

If you’re all in the house shouldn’t you all be having PCRs anyway?
