Does the second lateral flow test look positive?

boobood · 05/12/2021 16:24

Sorry I know this isn't AIBU but posting here for traffic.

DH tested positive via PCR on Friday. Did lateral flow on both DD's today. Top one is husbands positive lateral flow (did it more to check the lateral flow tests worked as been doing them for months and never had a positive result before). Checked both DD's lateral flows and they appeared negative. Just glanced now and it appears one of them is positive (the middle test)?? Did the test about an hour ago. Is the result invalid due to the length of time taking the test or do you think it's positive?

DD currently has no symptoms do you think I should do a PCR on her? She is extremely clinically vulnerable but it's an absolute nightmare getting her to take a test.

Thanks

Do another lateral flow test

CeratopsofthePharoahs · 05/12/2021 17:18

My DH did a couple of LFTs that had a very faint line. PCR came back negative both times. We figured it may have been a small amount of cross contamination as ds2 had tested strongly positive. Still isolated until the PCR result came back.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 05/12/2021 17:20

I wouldnt bother with another LFT. Id go straight for a PCR and then you'd, a) know for certain, and, b) dont have to go through the bother of testing her again if the second LFT is +ve (if getting her tested is a real challenge).

GlamourSpider · 05/12/2021 17:22

Yep, middle test looks like my LFT which was faint - I had a positive PCR the next day.

boobood · 05/12/2021 17:42

I believe that a PCR test isn't required even though DH tested positive unless someone in the house has symptoms. I PCR tested my other DD this morning as she had a bit of a temperature but haven't had results back. I have got a PCR test booked for ecv DD for tomorrow so I will know either way. It's going to be an absolute nightmare but obviously needs to be done.

It looks like either the dye has stopped moving or the test strip is in the wrong place. The line is lower down than any I've ever seen. Definitely disregard it and do another

toomuchlaundry · 05/12/2021 18:02

If you are a contact (especially a household contact) don't they suggest you do a PCR about 2 days later. I know that is what my friends have done if someone else in the family has tested positive

Iggly · 05/12/2021 18:04

Everyone who is a close contact should be getting a PCR.

It may be worth waiting a day or so because the PCR may be done too early.

Do you have nose only LFTs? They’re easier to manage obviously!

hopeishere · 05/12/2021 18:07

Second one might be positive. My son has SN so hates the throat test so we just do the nose. Could your DD cope with that.

I know how stressful it is. DH is CEEV and our DS got covid. We all luckily escaped.

EightNine2019 · 05/12/2021 18:10

When I got covid, my first lateral flow test was just like that one, took more than half an hour to show a very faint positive. I did another lateral flow the next day, and that was positive straight away, (and also had positive PCR)

boobood · 05/12/2021 18:11

The lateral flow that I did was a nose one, so much more manageable for DD although still took me nearly 3 hours of coaxing and in the end having to pretty much force the swab up her nose. Obviously it makes me feel terrible as a parent but I don't know what the alternative is. I have booked her a PCR so will obviously have to do my best with it tomorrow, but not sure how much of a sample I will be able to get (she is almost as big as me).

Hopefully any positive would now show as DH tested positive on Friday.

Blossomandbee · 05/12/2021 18:15

I would take it as a void as the line is in the wrong place. I would repeat it if you can

Bigoldhag · 05/12/2021 18:17

Nhs website recommends getting one regardless of symptoms. The rules where I am (UK, but devolved nation) would require you to get one.

Seriously, you’re in the same house with a positive person, get a PCR for goodness sake.

toomuchlaundry · 05/12/2021 18:20

Even the PCRs can be done with just nasal swabs if going to be really problematic to do the throat swab.

my8thMNusername · 05/12/2021 18:23

2-3 weeks ago I had a positive line come up after the 30 mins. 3 subsequent negative PCRs over the following week and now I can confirm it definitely wasn't covid so don't panic yet!

boobood · 05/12/2021 18:23

Me and my other DD both have had a PCR as recommended (but not mandated) by the NHS. It's a very traumatic experience for my DD to have a test (particularly a back of the throat one) so I have chosen to lateral flow each day with her instead. It's now always as easy as 'get a PCR test for goodness sake!'

OP posts:
boobood · 05/12/2021 18:23

@my8thMNusername thank you! Gives me hope that it is a false positive

OP posts:
boobood · 05/12/2021 18:24

Obviously have now booked a PCR for my DD to confirm whether the test is accurate or not

my8thMNusername · 05/12/2021 18:25

How old is your DD? Just swab her nose - when we did actually have covid over a year ago I barely swabbed my DD's nose and pcr showed positive. I don't do her throat anymore.

NeverHomeAlone · 05/12/2021 18:29

Yes it's positive.

A similar thing happened to us. DS took a late flow test which initially looked negative. I assumed no covid. Walked past the test 10 mins later (within 30 mins of it being taken) and there was a very faint line.

Had him PCR tested asap and it came back positive. As it turned out we all caught covid from him.

boobood · 05/12/2021 18:29

DD is 11, just under the age of being jabbed. I think I am only going to be able to swab her nose, I don't honestly think she is going to let me do the back of her throat, and she is almost as big as me and just as strong. Glad to hear that the result still
showed up. Thanks so much for reassuring me.

*lateral

whattodo2019 · 05/12/2021 18:32

Yes but do another one to be certain

tallduckandhandsome · 05/12/2021 18:37

Why would you leave it for an hour?

You’re supposed to check it between 15-30 minutes.
