To tell you that I just tied a Greggs vegan bake

And it was pretty much the most horrible thing I’ve had in forever.
Sage-y brown sludge
Bleurgh

I am veggie since forever and have had my fair share of disaster-geddon veggie dishes. Tell me your worst?

Oh Forgot to add it was a ‘festive’ bake

What do you think you're being unreasonable about?

Rockbird · 26/11/2021 13:06

I don't mind them and my veggie teenager is very fond of them. Hey ho.

Sparklfairy · 26/11/2021 13:06

I'm not veggie or vegan but want to reduce meat and dairy. I bought vegan Applewood smoked cheese because I love the "real" stuff.

Christ, it was vile, and I'm the least fussy person ever. It was like chewing plastic. I then read on the packet that it suggests melting it, basically admitting its inedible in its solid state Grin

Arethechildreninbedyet · 26/11/2021 13:08

I have to disagree I think they’re brilliant!

My meat eating husband even chooses the vegan steak bakes over the meat ones and he’s the pickiest bastard you ever met.

I also think the difference between the sausage rolls and the normal ones is negligible.

TurnUpTurnip · 26/11/2021 13:08

I tried their cheese and bean one and I couldn’t eat it it was vile (the vegan one) I’m not vegan but I don’t eat pork so thought I would try it I took one bite and that was all!

I’ve been veggie/vegan for ten years.

Vegan cheese is an experience to say the least. It’s a difference between night and day, the only substitute I’ve found that’s somewhat alright is the follow your heart brand but you’d need to remortgage to replace gram for gram!

KarmaViolet · 26/11/2021 13:09

Absolute worst (and I'll eat most things) was a Wicked Kitchen caesar wrap. It had the consistency of a used condom. Hideous.

RampantIvy · 26/11/2021 13:10

@Sparklfairy I think that cheese is the most difficult thing to replicate. Pretty much all vegan "cheese" I have tried is vile, especially the coconut based ones. The best ones are made with cashew nuts, which is no good if you have a nut allergy.

FluffEverywhere · 26/11/2021 13:11

Totally agree with you! It's horrible! I'm vegan and have also tried my fair share of slightly dodgy dishes, but I had high hopes!

Whingasaurus · 26/11/2021 13:11

I've had the vegan sausage roll it was lovely as it the vegan patty in Subway I was looking forward to the festive bake now not so much

Sparklfairy · 26/11/2021 13:14

@RampantIvy @Arethechildreninbedyet I'm glad I'm not alone! Interestingly I bought Huel Hot and Savoury for lazy healthy lunches, which happen to be vegan. They do a "mac and cheeze" and I've no idea what they put in it but the "cheese" is indistinguishable from the real deal!

FluffEverywhere · 26/11/2021 13:14

@Sparklfairy vegan cheese is all a bit awful.. Best I've had is a cheese sauce I make frequently; 5-6tbsp Nutritional Yeast, 200ml oat cream, 1-2tspn vegan bouillon, stir well over a low heat.. lovely!

The Greggs vegan sausage rolls have a well deserved place in my life, it's just the festive bake that I find gross!

I wretch at the thought of vegan Mac and cheese.

You are not alone!

youllneedthisfish · 26/11/2021 13:20

Oh I actually like the vegan sausage rolls

Once had a vegan pizza. The ‘mozzarella’ was like snot and the ‘grated Parmesan’ was like toenails

What do you think you're being unreasonable about

Oh Lockheart. Aren’t you getting tired of policing the boards like this?

ComtesseDeSpair · 26/11/2021 13:28

I think there are some things which just can’t be veganised. Vegan cheese is just awful. I bought some vegan cream cheese from Holland & Barrett a couple of years ago and it was like eating solidified vegetable oil. Which I suppose is what it was.

I’m a big fan of Richmond vegetarian sausages though and would pick them 100% over any meat sausages.

OlympicProcrastinator · 26/11/2021 13:29

Subway vegan cheese is nice. I’m not vegan and I like it. That being said, lots of vegans said they hated so what do I know?

RampantIvy · 26/11/2021 13:30

Richmond vegetarian sausages are pretty good IMO. They just taste like cheap sausages. DD is vegetarian and we eat them when she is home.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 26/11/2021 13:31

A vegan burger. When I got home it was a bun, no sauce of any kind or vegan spread, with a giant plain cooked slimy mushroom inside and no seasoning.
When I complained they said I could have another one for free hahahaha.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 26/11/2021 13:35

Their vegan sausage rolls are lovely but I wonder if it's because their meat sausage rolls are so mushy that it's hard to tell the difference between them?

iglpgl · 26/11/2021 13:38

But what did you tie it to? Grin

Keyboardkaterina · 26/11/2021 13:41

I really like Applewood! I haven’t had real cheese for years then accidentally had some in something and thought I was going to be sick. It tasted so sour, like something going off. I agree there are some revolting vegan cheeses out there, but I’ll take them over something that came out of a cows udder and quite possibly contains pus.

Sparklingbrook · 26/11/2021 13:44

Have you retried their pretend bacon? It’s horrible. They’ve even made it look like it’s got loads of rind on. 🤢 I agree about the sausages through they’re nice enough.
