And it was pretty much the most horrible thing I’ve had in forever.
Sage-y brown sludge
Bleurgh

I am veggie since forever and have had my fair share of disaster-geddon veggie dishes. Tell me your worst?

Tried not retried!

ItIsMyName · 26/11/2021 13:49

A conference at Southampton Uni, lunch was a baked onion with a pinch of breadcrumbs on top!

Sparklfairy · 26/11/2021 13:53

Does anyone else think that Richmond veggie sausages taste good because real Richmond sausages have hardly any meat in them anyway so there's no taste difference Grin

longtompot · 26/11/2021 13:59
@Sparklfairy vegan cheese is all a bit awful.. Best I've had is a cheese sauce I make frequently; 5-6tbsp Nutritional Yeast, 200ml oat cream, 1-2tspn vegan bouillon, stir well over a low heat.. lovely!

The Greggs vegan sausage rolls have a well deserved place in my life, it's just the festive bake that I find gross!
I shall have to give that a try! My ed is dairy free due to allergies and loves cheese, it's the one thing she really misses, and it can be a bit hit and miss making a good cheese sauce.

I think for people who have to avoid certain foods for allergy reasons, trying to find something similar to a much missed food is tricky and when you find something not quite as bad as previous ones you've tried it can be a wonderful thing. But they still don't have the right taste and/or texture. As a dairy eater I do find some of them unpalatable but that said, Vitalite creamy block cheese is amazing melted in a sauce or a toastie and the Applewood one is the same. Eaten cold, not quite so much.

Yep.

I don't really like fake bacon/meat/cheese. I prefer to make something else. IMO the best unprocessed food item that resembles meat is king oyster mushrooms. Texture-wise they are a bit more chewy than anything else. Sliced, marinaded in teriyaki sauce then fried and served with stir fried vegatebles they are delicious.

I think a lot of non meat eaters don't get that it isn't just taste, but texture that meat eaters miss. I have made seitan before, but I'm not wild about it.

Beeinalily · 26/11/2021 14:34

Oh no! I'll have to stick to their Belgian buns (in a Christmassy box, of course.). Oh dear, what a shame. 😁😁😁😁

Sparklfairy · 26/11/2021 14:47

So true. I've tried all sorts of meat free mince, and they can taste fairly similar when in a bolognese, but the texture is often spongy or like polystyrene.

I also think they miss a trick on the marketing front. They try so hard to pitch "meat replacements" as "just like bacon" or whatever which inevitably draws comparisons. Yet as an example I like Linda McCartney mozzarella burgers (not so much the other ones of hers). It has neither the same taste or texture of a "burger" but its nice in its own right iyswim.

RampantIvy · 26/11/2021 15:42

Yes, I like the mozzarella burgers as well. I'm not vegetarian BTW, I just like everything Grin

BackBackBack · 26/11/2021 18:14

I like the vegan festive bake. But vegan cheese is rank - I haven't found a single good one yet.

AlCalavicci · 26/11/2021 18:37

I was stuck at Reading train station for a hour in the freezing cold and was really hungry , so I bought a coffee and a vegan sausage roll vegan and pasty from The Pasty Shop the sausage roll was not bad at all but coffee was tasteless and the pasty was revolting and it cost me about £9 ,
£9 for a sausage roll Sad

Voord · 26/11/2021 19:18

I’m not vegetarian or vegan but I think their vegan sausage rolls aren’t bad.

senorafridgidaire · 26/11/2021 19:23

I love their vegan steak bakes and sausage rolls but I was in there the other day and the festive bakes looked awful, really flat and anaemic. I think I'll definitely give them a miss now!

Noworneverever · 26/11/2021 19:25

I just had one of those this morning for first time. It's was alright, not amazing but not awful. Just something you would buy when theyve got no sausage rolls on.

OldTinHat · 26/11/2021 19:26

Jack fruit. Anything jack fruit. 🤢

Movinghouseatlast · 26/11/2021 19:28

Vegan feta cheese. Oh my Christ it's awful.

MushMonster · 26/11/2021 19:32

Oh dear, I have not tried yet, not sure what to do now!

EerieSilence · 26/11/2021 19:33

I think that vegan cheese is one of the vilest things I've ever tried. Bluergh. Plastic melted with fat.
Another thing were the vegan dips. Those that are supposed to be blue-cheese substitute were the worst. I couldn't eat them and had to get the proper ones.
I have no problem eating vegetarian food most days but vegan substitutes are awful.

Riskyrice · 26/11/2021 19:37

I had one of their festive vegan slices yesterday as they had no vegan sausage rolls, I agree it was gross. Anonymous sludge and really really salty (and I'm a total salt fiend, so for me to find it too salty means it must have tonnes!)

Aggy35 · 26/11/2021 19:39

I love all of the greggs vegan stuff! If anything I think the sausage roll for example is better than the normal one as its flakes and less greasy

Topseyt · 26/11/2021 19:43

I really like their vegan sausage rolls. Even my meat loving mother enjoys them sometimes too.

I've occasionally wondered whether or not to try the vegan slices, but they don't get such a good write-up so maybe I will stick with what I know for now.

Voord · 26/11/2021 19:44

Vegan cheese is uniformly awful. If you’re vegan you just have to accept that it’s off the menu.

musicviking1 · 26/11/2021 19:48

I don't like any of the food in Greggs, the steak slice and sausage rolls are always lukewarm. I like my food hot.

user848827672 · 26/11/2021 19:49

I am glad they have a vegan option and more places do these days, not everyone likes a sausage roll

musicviking1 · 26/11/2021 19:50

I mean steak bake* Grin

Her657844 · 26/11/2021 19:50

There grosse and so salty
