To ask how you budget for nieces and nephews?

Christmas related but applies to birthdays from here on too I suppose.

How do you do it in your families when you have 3 kids (for example) and your siblings have 1 child.?

Do you spend £20 on their kid, totalling £20, and they spend £20 on each of yours, totalling £60? Or do they spend £6.67 on each of yours?

The numbers are just an example of course, just wondering your opinion on the matter

We don’t buy for nieces and nephews. Only for god children. Same applies for my siblings and dh’s siblings. No one has an issue with it and it has worked well for 22 years!

MeltedButter · 24/11/2021 18:34

I wouldn't be so calculated about it. I'd just buy them what I thought they would like.

I'd stick to my budget but that would be set by how much I can afford not by the comparisons to my own children.

Kpo58 · 24/11/2021 18:35

I usually set a budget of £10 per child. Sometimes I use the Argos 2 for £15 offer to get items over the £10 budget as sometimes thier items can be over £12 if you bought them on their own.

tootootaataa · 24/11/2021 18:35

We don't buy for them, and they for ours. We all decided we would rather save the money to have days out together.

icelollycraving · 24/11/2021 18:37

I spend about £20ish each. Sometimes a bit more.
One sister spends less on other family as they have two. I think that’s a bit mean spirited. That said, she never buys them what they want anyway.

Trisolaris · 24/11/2021 18:37

I don’t consider children as extensions as their parents. All my family members get around £20 spent on them including children no matter how many per family.

I don't have any children, and budget around £20 per niece/nephew/godchild.

Horst · 24/11/2021 18:39

Don’t budget as such if they want a hot wheels thing that’s £25 cool if it’s a bubble machine at £10 it’s £10. £50 for a special birthday maybe or if it’s going towards a big present kinda thing.

Notdoingthis · 24/11/2021 18:42

I have 11 nieces and nephews. I try to stick to £10-£15 each but they spend too much back. It's impossible to keep up with.
The splitting it per child is bizarre. Would you spend less on an older person as they have received more over the course of their lives?

YoComoManzanas · 24/11/2021 18:45

All family members get about £25-30 spent on them. Sometimes more sometimes less if I can get a bargain. However, my adult nephews no longer get a present and probably not even a card because they have never sent us anything or acknowledged our previous gifts.

IggyAce · 24/11/2021 18:46

I’ve got 2 dcs and my db 3 I spend £15 per child & my brother similar on mine.

ShortColdandGrey · 24/11/2021 18:48

I have 6 nieces and 5 nephews. They all get £15/20 spent on them, but I look for bargains so I don't always spend that much. I don't care if they have more kids than me. We do treat boxes for the adults so only spending money on the bairns.

cookiemonster2468 · 24/11/2021 18:49

It doesn't have to be equal.

There are several kids in my family and I probably spend £10-15 on each, but that's an average depending on what they'll like.

They don't spend anything on me and that's fine.

MsSquiz · 24/11/2021 18:50

We have 3 nephews/nieces on DH's side and have a rough budget for each of them for birthdays & Christmas, I think SIL spends more on dd than we do on their individual kids, but that's her choice.

I have 1 nephew on my side and we agreed a budget of around £30 for each child, for birthday and Christmas

I guess it all depends on what you can afford to spend

Cherrytart23 · 24/11/2021 18:52

I Spend about 30 on each of my nephews (2). My ds spends a bit more than that on my 2 but that's because she wants to and she knows I don't have as big of budget as her. None of the dc have ever noticed the price difference.

3cats4poniesandababy · 24/11/2021 19:01

I only have 3 so maybe a bit different from if I had loads.

We all do something they will like between £15 and £40. I dont spend more because my budget it £x.

Currently they are varying ages and spilt across different sides of the family. Might change in future if our financial situation changes or they suddenly have another 10 kids.

CorpusCallosum · 24/11/2021 19:08

Before DB and SIL had kids I'd budget £100 for their Xmas presents. Now they have 2 kids I spend about £100 between the whole family.

No tit for tat on gift giving between us, just whatever the budget happens to be gets split between them all.

Nearlytheretrees · 24/11/2021 19:19

Me and dsis spend roughly the same on each child, she has 3 and I have 2

Truthlikeness · 24/11/2021 19:26

I have 2 nephews and no kids myself. I spend about £50 on them each for birthday and xmas. I get their parents xmas and birthday presents too - I'd feel bad if I didn't. Obviously I'm spending far more than they are, but I have a pretty small family, so it's not a problem for me.

RobinPenguins · 24/11/2021 19:28

I’m the one with one DC vs their more, and I spend roughly the same amount each on a gift for their children as I would if there was one - the £20 each in your example.

Justcashnosweets · 24/11/2021 19:31

We try and spend between £10-£15 on each child, as we have 12 niece's and nephews to buy for. We have 1 child but our siblings with more children always spend a bit more on ours. Its worked for us for years.

Georgieporgie29 · 24/11/2021 19:32

I spend £25-30 on each child no matter how many they have

Member589500 · 24/11/2021 19:33

You’re not trying to be ‘fair’ with your spend for that family group. You’re treating each small person as a person.
That’s m the way we do it.
So if one family has 3 children and one has one then yes the family with 3 gets more.

JustLyra · 24/11/2021 19:36

We spend around £30 on DH’s nieces and nephews. They spend around £15 each on ours, but we have 6 and they don’t.

We spend more on one of my nephews as he lives with us (well when not at Uni), but we’re NC with my family so nothing on the rest. Did try sending gifts the first year but they were sent back smashed up.
