Do you decorate the outside of your house?!

userno53627 · 14/11/2021 16:16

Exactly that really. Do you decorate the outside of your house for Christmas?

When I was growing, it felt like hardly anyone did. Maybe one or two and they would be famous for it and you'd drive around to have a look. It seems to have become increasingly popular which is great - dc love the lights.

Last year most houses on our street decorated outside and a fair few in the village. Some have gone all out and others more subtle.

I felt a right Scrooge because we've never really bothered with the outside - only indoors.

Am I really a Scrooge?

I just don't have the patience to sort it out - or the money!

Where do people store outside lights all winter in small houses with bit garage?

You could get a projector. Easy to set up, not expensive a d easy to store.

MagentaRocks · 14/11/2021 16:18

I don’t even decorate inside let alone outside.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 14/11/2021 16:19

We just have a wreath on the front door, which is what we did when I was growing up too.

headlock · 14/11/2021 16:19

I have a curtain of twinkly lights I put in the living room. They're really pretty.

toconclude · 14/11/2021 16:20

No. It's not Scroogelike, it's personal taste, and people trying to pressure others can get to fuck

Sparklingbrook · 14/11/2021 16:20

Nothing outside, minimal inside.

I don't really get doing the outside as you can't actually see it when you're at home. Grin

SnarkyBag · 14/11/2021 16:20

We have a large Leylandi that we put lights on and that’s it. Takes about 3 sets of lights but they just get stored in a plastic box in the loft

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 14/11/2021 16:21

Christ no. Tacky, expensive and environmentally unfriendly.

Jabvribt · 14/11/2021 16:21

We put lights on the porch but DH isn’t keen on the outside and I’m not good with ladders. Plus it’d take us an age to get round to taking them down

MajorCarolDanvers · 14/11/2021 16:22

Yes

I have a few light projectors and some outdoor lights I drape around some bushes.

It's pretty easy and takes me no more than 15 minutes to set it up.

Bluntness100 · 14/11/2021 16:23

No, a wreath on the front door and that’s it.

Mandalayblonde · 14/11/2021 16:23

Christ No. Tacky as Hell.

CaptaNoctem · 14/11/2021 16:25

No. It always looks tacky to me.

I would hate to live opposite some of the houses around here in December.

Dropcloth · 14/11/2021 16:26

We put some lights on a tree in the front garden and a wreath on the door.

Alsonification · 14/11/2021 16:28

I used to hang icicle lights from the gutters but I’m older now & not in the mood for swinging off ladders however I still love the house to be decorated. Instead the last few years I’ve put fairy lights around the front door & on the wreath that’s on the door & then I have a curtain of lights for each of the front windows upstairs & downstairs. Makes the whole house look decorated but without me having to go outside.

girlmom21 · 14/11/2021 16:29

We don't decorate outside. You can't see it when you're in the house, we're not on a busy road and most of our neighbours don't celebrate Christmas so it'd be a complete waste of time and money even if we could be arsed.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 14/11/2021 16:30

Absolutely not.

There are some houses round here with fairy lights in trees which can look lovely. But projector things, flashy signs and the rest of it? Over my dead body.

Oblomov21 · 14/11/2021 16:32

We have one set of flashing lights and blue lights outside. And a big wreath.

I like it, makes me happy.

mummabear20202022 · 14/11/2021 16:32

I always joke that I'd have my house lit up like in Deck The Halls if I could!

It is each to their own, and I don't actually decorate the outside of my house, however there's something about it that brings me genuine happiness when I see a house with lights on the outside, takes me right back to my childhood.

Angel2702 · 14/11/2021 16:33

We do the windows from inside as well don’t have outside plug. We have battery lights on the fence and wreath. TBH I don’t really like any of it, it more for the kids. I can’t wait to retire the light up reindeer lights etc and have something more to my own taste.

dementedpixie · 14/11/2021 16:33

We have silhouette lights that we attach to the windows so you can see them from outside and then icicle lights along the gutter. Also have a small potted tree that I move to the front door and it has cherry lights on it

JaceLancs · 14/11/2021 16:34

Wreath on the door
We have a small fir tree in a pot near door all year round it’s sheltered enough that I just stick some battery lights on it

Woeismethischristmas · 14/11/2021 16:35

I have a couple of projector lights which are really effective.

SnarkyBag · 14/11/2021 16:35

To be honest people who put up flashing lights should be shot! They’re such an assault on the eyes and brain!

JurgensCakeBaby · 14/11/2021 16:37

We have a wreath and a small potted Christmas tree that we've been growing since DS was given it as a tiny sapling that sits in a pot by the open porch with some white lights on it, we sometimes have a small string of white lights around the edge of the porch roof (old open Edwardian one tiled with wooden struts). My neighbours across the road give Blackpool a run for their money, to the extent we've had to get blackout liners for our bedroom curtains and a blackout blind for DS' room
