Do you decorate the outside of your house?!

userno53627 · 14/11/2021 16:16

Exactly that really. Do you decorate the outside of your house for Christmas?

When I was growing, it felt like hardly anyone did. Maybe one or two and they would be famous for it and you'd drive around to have a look. It seems to have become increasingly popular which is great - dc love the lights.

Last year most houses on our street decorated outside and a fair few in the village. Some have gone all out and others more subtle.

I felt a right Scrooge because we've never really bothered with the outside - only indoors.

Am I really a Scrooge?

I just don't have the patience to sort it out - or the money!

Where do people store outside lights all winter in small houses with bit garage?

@MagentaRocks

I don’t even decorate inside let alone outside.

We either put a wreath or ribbon on our front door and DH wraps strings of lights around a silver birch and a small yew tree in the front garden. But that's it.

BiddyPop · 15/11/2021 10:09

The ribbons are lengths of wide plaid ribbon wrapped around the door, top to bottom and around the middle, with a bow tied on where the 2 meet - so it looks like a present - but it is 2 separate lengths and a completely separate bow, not all 1 piece.

Zenithbear · 15/11/2021 10:18

We put lights on the two large fir trees at either side of the end of the driveway.
Total pita but it looks amazing.

Pyewackect · 15/11/2021 10:22

Wreath on the door and some ancient lights around the front entrance.

Xmasfairy86 · 15/11/2021 10:26

@ThanksItHasPockets

We have very few lights visible from the street except for Swedish candle bridges on the windowsills but frankly some of the miseries on these and other Christmas threads make me want to buy a 6ft inflatable illuminated Christmas T-Rex and put it up outside in the hope that one of them lives near me.
I asked my DH if we could get him 🤣 sadly he said no….. something to do with no where to put him 🤷🏽‍♀️
LolaSmiles · 15/11/2021 10:34

We don't do anything outside other than a wreath.

Most houses near me have nothing, a small set of lights on their front garden tree, or a small neutral set on the front of the house.

On my way to work I see some awful displays and would hate to live opposite because there every colour lights, huge inflatable snowmen/Santas, coloured LED shapes everywhere and projector lights. It looks like assorted festive crap has been tipped on the house and garden.

There's a couple of people in a nearby town who do a really nice display to raise money for charity each year. They turn them on for a couple of hours a night and are very nicely done.

I have warm glow led lights everywhere outside mine. Nothing bright white and nothing flashing 'cause I worry about people with epilepsy and other seizure disorders.

lunarlandscape · 15/11/2021 15:15

We just had a (huge) door wreath until last year. But after lockdown being so miserable, I got some beautiful icicle lights and now we have those too. Not overboard but a bit more cheerful to come home to on a frosty evening.

lunarlandscape · 15/11/2021 15:17

@CliveAntichrist - love those star lights over the porch and the warm icicle lights.

wendywoopywoo222 · 15/11/2021 15:19

I'm another that doesn't even decorate inside.

RedHot22 · 15/11/2021 15:56

Those of you who don’t decorate inside.

Why not?

RupertTheCat · 15/11/2021 15:59

Yes but I grew up in a country where everyone does so it seems normal to me.

Heidib00 · 15/11/2021 16:57

@dementedpixie I absolutely love your lights, they’re what I’ve been imagining at the front of my house as they look so delicate. Can I be cheeky and ask what to search for please? I tried various things and didn’t find any

TulipsTwoLips · 15/11/2021 17:05

More plastic tat, more electricity consumed. One of the town councillors round here is encouraging it. I really feel for our eco groups if that’s what they’re up against

Which ones? The window ones? Or the icicles on the gutter?

Heidib00 · 15/11/2021 17:10

@dementedpixie the icicles. When I searched I was only finding like straight strands of individual large, solid light up icicles. I think it’s a user error on my part 😂 thanks. I shall go check Amazon instead of google.

dementedpixie · 15/11/2021 17:17

Look for icicle string lights

weegiemum · 15/11/2021 17:22

Don't need to as over-the-road do enough for the whole street! Flashing icicles and coloured lights round the roof, flashing lights on the porch and fence round the garden, then in the garden a light up Santa, 4 Christmas trees and 3 light up polar bears. Plus a flashing blue and white star and 2 flashing merry Christmas signs on the fence. It's migraine inducing. And now if you live in my street I've given it away!

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 15/11/2021 17:24

We have a wreath on the door and lights (warm white on the static setting) on the picket fence and in the plant pots (run on rechargeable batteries).

All very tasteful Wink

Indoors is more like an elf threw up Grin

Your 29 word post through your phone or laptop did more damage to the environment than a string of LED Xmas lights would do in a week.
