Do you decorate the outside of your house?!

userno53627 · 14/11/2021 16:16

Exactly that really. Do you decorate the outside of your house for Christmas?

When I was growing, it felt like hardly anyone did. Maybe one or two and they would be famous for it and you'd drive around to have a look. It seems to have become increasingly popular which is great - dc love the lights.

Last year most houses on our street decorated outside and a fair few in the village. Some have gone all out and others more subtle.

I felt a right Scrooge because we've never really bothered with the outside - only indoors.

Am I really a Scrooge?

I just don't have the patience to sort it out - or the money!

Where do people store outside lights all winter in small houses with bit garage?

I have to say I enjoy seeing lights start popping up from 1 December. It feels like quite a primal urge to want to share light at the darkest time of the year.

Yeah, I think so too.

RedHelenB · 14/11/2021 17:23

@Sparklingbrook

Nothing outside, minimal inside.

I don't really get doing the outside as you can't actually see it when you're at home. Grin

But it feels so homely and welcoming coming in from the dark nights.
dudsville · 14/11/2021 17:24

It's endlessly disheartening coming across people diminishing or demeaning other people when they are simply behaving within the law but not to your aesthetic, and I especially dislike people who do this from the safety of their anonymous internet chair. They are without grace and are underserving of respect.

RedHot22 · 14/11/2021 17:24

@nosuchluck25

Hell no it's tacky!
It may look tacky on your house …..
RedHot22 · 14/11/2021 17:25

Many houses don’t need Christmas decorations to look tacky 😂

MintJulia · 14/11/2021 17:26

We live in a rural village with no street lights.

Dec 10th - Jan 10th I put our gable lights on. They're static white icicle lights, pretty inoffensive and a welcome relief from the winter gloom. No-one has ever complained.

And a wreath on the front door. Smile

AuntieMarys · 14/11/2021 17:26

We have tasteful lights 😀

OldTinHat · 14/11/2021 17:27

My house used to look like Blackpool illuminations outside whilst my boys grew up until I moved to a conservation area. I was gutted to learn outside lights are not permitted.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 14/11/2021 17:28

My granny always did, we don't, mostly because of money.

Underthestairsbears · 14/11/2021 17:29

White twinkly lights on the porch, white lights on the inside of the front window and white paper stars and snowflakes thinly strung on the inside of the window so it looks pretty from outside.

Brace yourself for November and December on Mumsnet.

Soon it will be the people who put their trees up too early, and then it will be those who take them down too soon. Then it will be those who do 'elf on the shelf', and if we get some really niche content this year we'll get criticism of those who teach their children to be compulsive liars by introducing the concept of Father Christmas (and don't forget that any child past the age of five who still believes is Displaying A Worrying Lack of Critical Thinking Skills). Then those who buy too much for their children, and those who buy too little - and that's all before we get started on fireworks at New Year.

Merry Christmas!

ParkheadParadise · 14/11/2021 17:31

Yes, we do now because of dd otherwise I wouldn't bother.

We still have half a scarecrow lying in the front garden leftover from the scarecrow competition in our town 😂😂😂 it was Dorothy from the wizard of oz.
Lights, Snowmen, Santa and outside trees will go up after dd's birthday at the beginning of December

GrinGrin I love those ones. Grin

@headlock - a projector?! No consideration for neighbours who don't want strobe lighting or indeed people who have health issues that could be set off by this. Epilepsy, TIAs etc.

I agree. And the use of the word tacky is just so disappointing. Really judgemental and condescending.
Justme10 · 14/11/2021 18:02

A Santa stop here sign in one window and a curtain of lights on another, on the inside. I love walking past houses all lit up and taking my DS to see them as well Grin

I believe Christmas should be tack and the over the top so I want to see all the multi coloured lights and inflatable Santa's 🎅🏻

Justme10 · 14/11/2021 18:04

Tacky*

Chelyanne · 14/11/2021 18:05

Nope, some bugger would steal stuff from outside. I put glow in the dark pebbles out the front and they got taken, ones in back are set in concrete so still there.

Sparklingbrook · 14/11/2021 18:07

I see what you mean but that's once a day generally. Other than that you are in the house and can't see them.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 14/11/2021 18:07

Fresh wreath on the front door, that’s it.

nokidshere · 14/11/2021 18:11

I'm a Scrooge. I don't want to pay for other people to see a nice light display outside when I have my own lovely display indoors. I'm happy to look at other peoples though 😁

Sparklingbrook · 14/11/2021 18:13

I've just been up to close the curtains and I can report that someone in the street has a Christmas tree with lights on outside their house already. Shock

Same hereWink

However... blue flashing lights are NOT tasteful. Ever.

Lachimolala · 14/11/2021 18:19

I put up a wreath on the door, some twinkly waterfall lights in the window and some gold stars in the top window. All from home bargains and cost me less than £30, I keep them in a box under the bed with the rest of the baubles lol.

I never used to bother but I feel very festive now I do, kids enjoy it too.
