For wanting the blinds shut when it's dark outside?

HumunaHey · 10/11/2021 19:08

I have a real bug bear with my DH. When it gets dark, he'll often switch the living room lights on but leave the blinds open.

I hate it. I feel really exposed with the way people can see us lit up like Christmas trees but we can't really see out as it's pitch black. I also don't like any Tom, Dick or Harry on the street seeing what we have in our house.

It gets brought up alot and DH will close the blinds when I ask and even occasionally without me asking, but he thinks I'm wierd for "passionately" (his description) for wanting them shut when it's dark out. Am I?

NO!!! You’re definitely not unreasonable - this is one of my absolute bugbears and it’s an argument I have every year with my family - and it’s even worse if they have the big light on, rather than the side lamps. Like you, I hate the feeling of living on a lit goldfish bowl.

I can feel my anger rising just thinking about this Grin

EileenGC · 10/11/2021 19:11

I’d personally close them myself if it bothered me. Or get curtains.

My own bugbear is closed windows and if I ever find them closed, I just open them again. Not worth the argument I have found Grin

Sunstar16 · 10/11/2021 19:12

My DH is the exact same. If I am out and come home every light is on with the blinds open. I joke it's like Blackpool Illuminations.

BurscoughBooths · 10/11/2021 19:13

Why don’t you just shut the blinds or curtains when you go into the room?

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/11/2021 19:14

He switches the lights on, you close the blinds.

Teamwork!

DGFB · 10/11/2021 19:14

Yanbu, of course people love to nosey when they can see inside.
As soon as it’s dark we shut our blinds

cloudyrain · 10/11/2021 19:15

I like to close the blinds before it gets dark at this time of year by 3pm I want to close the house up, turn the heating on (if necessary) and snuggle up on the sofa with a hot mug of tea.

Unfortunately I have to work until 6pm so I get by with shutting the curtains in my den/office and turning on the lights. I am not having the whole street watch me work.

I then do the rest of the house when it is really dark.

My bugbear with DH is that he has to open the blinds fully including pulling them up, even if nobody is going to use the room all day. And then I have to nag him when he is home before me as he will sit with them open

It isn't really about him closing them. I'd close them myself but it's when I'm in the room and he gets up to put the light on then goes to sit down (like the exhibitionist he is!) and I say "close the blinds" and he thinks it's some kind of oddball request.

But if you shut your blinds how can I slow down and peer in to judge your decor as I walk past?

SirChenjins · 10/11/2021 19:17

Rule is (or should be if I ruled the world) that if you switch on the light you pull down the blinds or shut the curtains

fabulouslyglamorousferret · 10/11/2021 19:17

I'm with DH! I hate closed doors, curtains etc ... I'm happy to be illuminated

NigellaSeed · 10/11/2021 19:18

I like to keep them open while it's still not fully dark but need lights on, I don't want to shut the curtains at 4pm.

Plus it's cozy for anyone walking around to see Windows looking all warm and glowing orange.

EileenGC · 10/11/2021 19:20

Yeah if he’s already getting up and you’re not, he could do both. And I say that as someone who doesn’t mind the blinds not closing when it gets dark!

LittleOwl153 · 10/11/2021 19:20

Should have blinds/curtains shut anyway once it gets dark... otherwise it let's the cold or the darks inside....Halloween Envy

usernamenumber636274 · 10/11/2021 19:21

My blinds have to be shut in the dark. I can't deal with them open. I live rurally and it's literally pitch black outside and I hate it! I hate looking out to darkness! I don't like the dark! Wouldn't want people looking in either!

iheartredsquirrels · 10/11/2021 19:22

I'd be more concerned about my home being checked out by unsavoury characters if curtains were open after dark.

Me too. But we back on to woodland so I presume no one is hiding there…. spying on us. 👻

DH is the scaredy cat in this hh🤣and will scurry behind me turning off lights, drawing curtains and so on and he calls me the exhibitionist.

DietCokeChipsAndMayo · 10/11/2021 19:23

We have the opposite problem - DP doesn’t open the blinds in the morning, so it’s light and the world is alive outside and all our bloody blinds are shut and lamps are on! 😤

AmberLynn1536 · 10/11/2021 19:24

I’m with DH as well, I hate closed blinds find it looks a bit depressing, I love how my house looks at night but I’m lucky as I don’t live on a street and have no houses behind or in front of me so no chance of strangers peeping in.

nokidshere · 10/11/2021 19:25

I'm just looking at how dark it is outside and my open blinds lol

Doesn't bother me at all although dh will automatically close them when he walks in the room because 'they' are watching him 🙄

Igmum · 10/11/2021 19:26

Yes, YES draw the curtains. If you turn on the lights, draw the curtains. I cannot BEAR to sit in a pool of light while there is darkness outside it totally freaks me out.

ShirleyPhallus · 10/11/2021 19:26

Urgh, I bet he uses the Big Light too doesn’t he 😷

I agree with you with not wanting to shut curtains by 4pm. It's grim. But shut curtains/blinds in the afternoon beat the feeling of being exposed for me.

You need to explains to him, slowly so he can understand, why people have blinds at windows.

Me too. Love an open window, boyfriend disagrees but he's a nesh sod.
