For wanting the blinds shut when it's dark outside?

HumunaHey · 10/11/2021 19:08

I have a real bug bear with my DH. When it gets dark, he'll often switch the living room lights on but leave the blinds open.

I hate it. I feel really exposed with the way people can see us lit up like Christmas trees but we can't really see out as it's pitch black. I also don't like any Tom, Dick or Harry on the street seeing what we have in our house.

It gets brought up alot and DH will close the blinds when I ask and even occasionally without me asking, but he thinks I'm wierd for "passionately" (his description) for wanting them shut when it's dark out. Am I?

I like them closed once it's dark but equally I hate closed curtains in the day. Drives me loopy when my teens have theirs closed in daylight lol.

@ShirleyPhallus

Urgh, I bet he uses the Big Light too doesn’t he 😷
😂 He used to! I've driven that filthy behaviour out of him! Still no luck with the blinds though.

Not weird at all op. I can't stand the blinds being open when it's dark outside either

StoneofDestiny · 10/11/2021 19:45

I'm with you OP - close the blinds if lights are on. Can't imagine wanting to be on display to all.
We've got big shutter blinds - huge slats - we can have them down and half tilted so we see out, nobody can see in.

mydogisthebest · 10/11/2021 19:52

I close the blinds in the bathroom and on the landing and the curtains in the bedroom as it gets dark.

I don't close the living room curtains as I just prefer them open even with lights on. I don't even put the light on in the bedroom so not sure why I feel the need to close the curtains

DanceAllDay · 10/11/2021 20:06

We have frosting half way up out front windows and wooden skates blinds at a tilt, so when it gets dark it doesn’t matter as nobody can see in.

I hate people being nosey and looking in, but I know my head automatically looks in at houses with lights on and I try not to!!

Crisispoint21 · 10/11/2021 20:15

I'm the non curtain drawing one in our house, it drives DH mad!

FadedRed · 10/11/2021 20:21

We have the same remote control to close the blinds and switch on whichever lights you want on. T’is magic, don’t even have to leave my chair.

Poppinjay · 10/11/2021 20:23

I used to be fascinated when my parents lived in the Netherlands that people there never seemed to close their curtains in the evenings. You could see who was watching the same TV channels in the surrounding apartment blocks as their rooms flickered in unison.

I hate being on display even though I'm sure no-one is interested enough to look in, so always close the blinds when the lights go on.

gamerchick · 10/11/2021 20:26

Or just send him outside and see what he can see with them open.

LifesABotch · 10/11/2021 20:27

YANBU! Massive bug bear of mine too!

BruceAndNosh · 10/11/2021 20:30

My DH is the same. However I have foiled him by fitting a Smart blind that is programmed to close at sunset and open at 9am. Regardless of Big Light status.

bigbluebus · 10/11/2021 20:36

There's a house on the corner of our street where the owners used to have all the lights on downstairs but all the curtains open so when you went past in the dark you could see right in. We nicknamed them the Lighthouse Family. They then moved and new people arrived. They put in a planning application to build an extension on the rear of the house as the "headlights shine into their windows on the front and disturb them". Cue me ranting - just get blackout blinds and shut the bloody curtains!

Alwaysoffendedneveroffensive · 10/11/2021 20:37

I'm sitting with the big light on and the blinds open.

It doesn't bother me all that much.

Blinds and curtains closed makes me feel a bit enclosed.

TuftyMarmoset · 10/11/2021 20:38

Tell him the light pollution is disturbing local wildlife

ConstanceGracy · 10/11/2021 20:41

I’m with you!
When we moved into our new house we didn’t have shutters in yet so even in the day time you’d see so many people have a good old nosey as they walked past, they weren’t even shy about it!

femfemlicious · 10/11/2021 20:42

I love lookong into peoples open windows😁

ConstanceGracy · 10/11/2021 20:43

Just to say we are actually an ‘anti big light’ family.
It’s lamps all the way here for us, the big light is too harsh

FiveShelties · 10/11/2021 20:45

Drives me mad when I am out walking the dog at night and people have their blinds/curtains closed.

Spoils all my fun.Grin

Missymisenthrope · 10/11/2021 21:03

My dear departed DH used to do this but would then walk about the bedroom naked after a shower or lie on the sofa in his pants, blinds open, room lit up like a Christmas tree. It used to make me apoplectic with rage, and I would rant and rave that children could see/somebody might think he’s doing to on purpose and report him to the police (quite rightly) etc. He could never see the big deal and would look at me like I was barmy as I whizzed around closing the blinds. He was so convinced people couldn’t really see in but of course they could! 🙄 I can laugh now but at the time I was furious with him. I promise you it wasn’t me that killed him!

JaninaDuszejko · 10/11/2021 21:05

I clearly have lived in houses without double glazing for too long. (Big thick lined) curtains get shut as soon as the sun starts setting. Nothing to do with people looking it, just don't want the heat escaping. Even with our current house which does have double glazing we've really noticed a difference in warmth when we get proper curtains fitted in a room.

Poshjock · 10/11/2021 21:16

Oh I can't bear it either. Not so much that people can see in, but that I can't see out. So someone could be standing in the street watching me and I'd not know - that proper gives me the creeps.

When I was little my mum used to take me for an evening walk in the winter (with the dog as the excuse) and told me it was because people didn't close their blinds til later and she got to nosy in at their decor. I think this may also have something to do with my aversion to it. I can genuinely believe that everyone walking past is looking in.

ilovepixie · 10/11/2021 21:37

Our living room curtains stay open as we live 3 stories up and no one can see in. The bedrooms at the back of the apartment get the blinds closed and curtains pulled at night as we overlook a hotel at the back.

DwangelaForever · 10/11/2021 21:43

I hate it when the blinds are open but it's dark outside. Similarly I HATE HATE HATE when it's light outside and the curtains/blinds are closed and the lights are on! I'm a psycho every morning opening my curtains 🤣

NeverDropYourMooncup · 10/11/2021 22:13

@Nesbo

But if you shut your blinds how can I slow down and peer in to judge your decor as I walk past?
It used to be the highlight of my winter rail commute for years, nosing into the backs of houses along the track - so much life going on, oblivious to a bored and tired commuter seeing that they had a lovely kitchen and a crappy living room, a perfectly set dining table ready for dinner, the exercise bikes in conservatories, amazing Christmas trees, small children on the move at 6am - so no, OP, YANBU.
