For wanting the blinds shut when it's dark outside?

HumunaHey · 10/11/2021 19:08

I have a real bug bear with my DH. When it gets dark, he'll often switch the living room lights on but leave the blinds open.

I hate it. I feel really exposed with the way people can see us lit up like Christmas trees but we can't really see out as it's pitch black. I also don't like any Tom, Dick or Harry on the street seeing what we have in our house.

It gets brought up alot and DH will close the blinds when I ask and even occasionally without me asking, but he thinks I'm wierd for "passionately" (his description) for wanting them shut when it's dark out. Am I?

YANBU, our living room lamp comes on on a timer, and I hate that everyone can see into our house. It just doesn’t occur to DH to draw the curtains.

pinklillie · 10/11/2021 22:26

It's like sleeping with the covers off! You just feel totally exposed.

My husband also thinks I'm an oddball for asking him to close the curtains when the lights are on.

Went to my friends one night for drinks and a catch up and I said do you want me to close the curtains and she said no why would I. I spent the evening sipping my wine feeling like I was being watched by the neighbours across the road I just couldn't relax!

Konstantine8364 · 10/11/2021 22:58

I honestly think nobody is right or wrong here, if you want the blinds/curtains shut then close them. But some people just don't see it as an issue. I genuinely couldn't care less if people outside can see me watching TV! From a security perspective I've got a shit TV, so it's probably better they can see there's nothing worth nicking 🤣 I also like open windows, open doors, open plan rooms. I hate feeling cooped up or trapped in.

DroopyClematis · 10/11/2021 23:00

Just shut your blinds?!!!

Thatsplentyjack · 10/11/2021 23:02

Mine does the same. So do the kids but they don't even put the lamps on, they put the horrible big ceiling light on that give a terrible light.

Thatsplentyjack · 10/11/2021 23:03

Although I do love it when other people leave their blinds open at night, so when I'm out in the dark with the dog I can have a wee nosey inside their houses 🤣

MurielSpriggs · 10/11/2021 23:51

I'm with your darling husband here. Although it does depend on what you get up to on your sofa Grin We're never doing anything more exciting than passed out watching TV, very disappointing for voyeurs.

CoffeeRunner · 10/11/2021 23:56

YANBU. I hate it. If we have lights on at the front of the house then the blinds need to be closed.

The exception is the lounge at the back of the house as we are not overlooked.

Tenfifteen · 11/11/2021 00:02

Voted the wrong way by accident Shock yanbu YaDEFINITELYnbu! I really really hard this and constantly have to remind DH!

Houseofvelour · 11/11/2021 00:08

YANBU!! As soon as it gets a bit dark, my shutters close and the light comes on! 😂 I'm not letting any random people see me walking around with no bra on.

JennyDune · 11/11/2021 00:10

You're completely right OP.

I have net curtains throughout the house for day time. And at night, I ALWAYS shut the curtains before turning the lights on at night.

sandgrown · 11/11/2021 00:16

Heating is so expensive at the moment and most heat is lost through windows so it makes sense to close them. Ex used to drive me mad as he never closed them . Since I left and he has to pay his own bills the curtains are closed every night !

ThePlumVan · 11/11/2021 00:33

YADNBU !

I hate the blinds open at night, even with the lights off. I will go home specifically to close blinds if it’s darked when I’m out. I literally HATE IT.

Equally, I hate my blinds still closed in the mornings too, so get up and ‘set the room’ before taking tea back to bed.

It’s exhausting Blush

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/11/2021 00:50

If your lights are on and curtains open then I will look and yes I will judge!

Your massive telly stuck high enough to give you neck ache? Eurghh...how chavvy.

Your "Signature" wall decor? Your Greige paint?... naff love.

Your husband in his pants? LMAO because he clearly hasnt considered that the world can see him!

Dont close your curtains like I do, I get no entertainment that way :o

madisonbridges · 11/11/2021 01:01

In my mum's village there are a quite a few houses that don't close the curtains. I LOVE taking the dog out for a walk round and a quick side-eye - don't like being too obviously nosy. But Christmas is coming up and I really enjoy the decorated houses.
So although I love your DH for leaving the curtains open, I think you're right, op, and you should definitely close them.

immersivereader · 11/11/2021 01:57

Not unusual at all

TheTempest · 11/11/2021 02:39

It took me years but I have finally trained everyone who lives in my house that evening means lights on, curtains closed. And mornings mean curtains open. It’s sad but it genuinely gives me joy when I get home and see someone has already done it! Grin

1forAll74 · 11/11/2021 02:53

I live off road, and not overlooked by anyone at all, front or back, but dark nights and lights on, and curtains or blinds closed, mean feeling cosy in your home, and in my case. stopping any draughts in my old cottage, with crap windows.

HumunaHey · 11/11/2021 11:10

Glad to see I am not BU.

I'll confess I can't resist a nose into people's houses when walking past too. Part of the reasons I like my blinds tightly closed when it gets dark!
