Greggs

Sometimes I fancy a cheese snd onion pastie and loved them when I was a teenager. I got one today and it's tasteless. The pastry is awful. Their bat biscuits weren't as good this year either. We look forward to those every Halloween.

The world's going to hell. It started when Asda stopped putting caster sugar on their jam doughnuts. Then golden Graham's stopped being sold here.

And don't get me started on chocolate.

Still it's good for my weight I suppose.

They need to stop meddling with our food!

Doughnuts used to be my favourite thing, they're terrible now. You used to get the lovely crispy fatty bits on the bottom.
Gregg's cheese pasties always taste faintly of banana to me these days.

WheelieBinPrincess · 09/11/2021 11:57

Lots of veggie stuff I like in the freezer section or in restaurants for that matter has been switched to be completely vegan! I get they can kill two birds with one stone that way but it pisses me off, I don’t want to be vegan- I want cheese 😂

Footprintsinthegrass · 09/11/2021 11:58

I used to love cheese and onion pasties from Greggs but they changed massively about 5 years ago. I bought one last weekend for the first time in a long time and it was really good, could really taste the cheese, I was super impressed

The bat biscuit didn't have enough kick to it though

TurnUpTurnip · 09/11/2021 11:59

People always rave about Greggs (there was a thread on here the other day saying how Gregg’s have the best doughnuts which I don’t agree) but I don’t think it’s nice at all.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 09/11/2021 11:59

Just one question ... are the festive bakes out yet? PLEASE don't let them have changed those Shock

Bumblenums1234 · 09/11/2021 11:59

The only place to get a good cheese abd onion pasty is Devon. No where else does them any where near as well.

Greggs cheese abd onion is grim and slimey

Yayaga · 09/11/2021 12:02

Companies have cut back on sugar etc to make their products more acceptable.

Pretty much all cereals now taste way less interesting than when I was a kid. Bought some nesquik ones the other day out of nostalgia - they tasted of literally nothing. Same with fizzy drinks.

CaptaNoctem · 09/11/2021 12:04

The fizzy drinks are ruined. They all taste of sweetener now.

tipOver · 09/11/2021 12:05

I love their vegan sausage rolls and sausage, bean+cheese bakes. Their chicken club baguettes used to be my absolute favourite thing though... I think I associate it with getting a treat as an always hungry kid when out with my mum, so it might just be nostalgia Grin

@muldersspeedos

I haven't told my DD about Golden Grahams yet, she'll be livid! I might get DH to do it, he's the one who got her onto them...

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 09/11/2021 12:40

We don't have Greggs in the ROI, so we had it for the first time a few weeks ago in Belfast. OMG, the steak bake - it's fabulous! And I love the way the pastry doesn't fling itself merrily all over your clothes.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 09/11/2021 13:53

I really like the cheese & bakes, and the vegan sausage rolls aren't bad.

I also really like their coffee. Went to an indi cafe recently for coffee, paid twice as much as Greggs coffee costs, and it was horrible.

CounsellorTroi · 09/11/2021 13:55

Greggs coffee is not to bad at all. Would choose it over Starbucks any day.

My late Mother made fantastic c and o pies, on holiday on the IOW when we were children she finished up going into the bakehouse of a bakery to show tham how to make them! I've never managed to replicate them. She always used strong Lancashire cheese and raw onion.
JalapenoCheeseOnToast · 09/11/2021 13:59

@WheelieBinPrincess I feel your pain - I still like cheese! So many restaurants I don't go to now because the veggie section is completely vegan and consists of either jackfruit (blergh) or pretend-meat (to look like, taste of and have the texture of meat as much as possible). Bring back the bean burger!

Vates · 09/11/2021 14:36

Sainsbury's used to do a lovely cheesy bean pasty that I adored but haven't been in ages. I hate potato chunks in a pasty and ginsters used to do one where there were no chunks, lovely smooth cheese and onion. Haven't been able to find another like it since.

I haven't been to Greggs in a couple of years now but my Sister bought their Halloween cupcakes and I just agreed when she said they were nice (she had just provided me with lunch so wasn't going to argue). They were not nice. Even the 4 year old ate a bit of icing, bit the cake and said that he'd had enough, lol.

Also in agreement about making options either meat or vegan. No veggie options! I actually love/used to love Halloumi burgers with houmous and various toppings when we went out to eat. And I love cheese.

Costumeidea · 09/11/2021 14:41

I don’t get the Gregg’s love. It all tastes shite to me.

Buy the frozen Greggs ones from Iceland/food warehouse. They are nicer than the ones from the shop. Havent seen festive bakes yet in those shops yet but they did have cajun bakes that I haven't seen before

This a million times over. We should be get getting our tastebuds used to less sweet food and drinks. Sweeteners are disgusting and I've always avoided them. My daughter finds she winds up her friends when she refuses a drink with sweeteners in it.

When I bake, I can easily cut the sugar by 25% and the cakes, biscuits still taste good.

Salt and sugar are flavour enhancers. We just need to get used to food with less sugar and salt.

Try Morrisons - they still have the crispy bits!

@Footprintsinthegrass

Surely the bat biscuit didn't have enough bite? Grin

oohmama · 09/11/2021 14:53

Greggs mince pies are the best! Hands down

Also love a chicken bake 😋

Yes to bean burgers! Who decided to get rid of them?! Down with salty meat substitute lumps!

ChrissyPlummer · 09/11/2021 14:55

@CaptaNoctem Try Soda Folk or Cawston Press. No nasty sweeteners!

They need to stop meddling with our food!
I used to buy loads of lovely wheat free products. There were separate products for those who were dairy free. Everyone was happy. But nowadays lazy manufacturers like to roll everything into one “free from” product. Which is unsuitable for wheat free people like me because I actually need and enjoy dairy. And it’s unsuitable for dairy free people because they don’t want to eat wheat free - because frankly wheat free is fucking disgusting unless you have no choice because you have a medical condition.

I suppose we should be grateful to have any free from food at all. Because lately it’s not trendy any more, vegan is the new thing. So the aisles of free from food are being gradually replaced by vegan. Which is not the same thing at all, and leaves people with medical conditions with nothing to eat!
