In thinking that Muriel's Wedding is the most heartbreaking film

Watching it tonight. It's so bloody sad.
But equally funny.
Her poor mum.
She's a beautifully written character, very flawed, and Toni Collette plays her perfectly.

I can only remember the ABBA scene. I need to watch it again.

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 08/11/2021 23:15

It is an absolutely devastating film. Yes, funny but oh god, so sad.

Redshoeblueshoe · 08/11/2021 23:16

Brilliant film.

OverByYer · 08/11/2021 23:17

‘You’re terrible Muriel’ is about as much as I can remember. I loved the film when it came out must rewatch

Redshoeblueshoe · 08/11/2021 23:18

In our house we regularly used to say You're terrible Muriel Grin

We still say, "Deirdrie Chambers! What a coincidence!"

It has some great lines but Muriel's mother is such a heartbreaking character.

Mermaidwaves · 08/11/2021 23:21

I loved her friend Ronda, so ballsy and stands up to the bitchy girl gang. It is a sad film though, I've watched it so many times it's a bit of a classic for me.

burblish · 08/11/2021 23:22

It’s the most heartbreaking gem of a film, and Toni Collette is just amazing in it.

SoniaFouler · 08/11/2021 23:26

I remember it being advertised as a fun, laugh out loud comedy and it definitely was not. I really like it though.

Funnily enough, only yesterday I read that the one who sucked Tanya’s husbands cock (sorry, can’t remember her name!) plays/played Muriel’s mother in the stage version of the film.

SoniaFouler · 08/11/2021 23:28

Oh no, wait I got mixed up. I mean the woman from the bitchy gang who had an affair with Tanya’s husband and Muriel caught them having sex, that’s the one who plays the mother

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 08/11/2021 23:32

The one Tanya lamps at the holiday resort?

The one Tanya lamps at the holiday resort?
Yes! This is where I read it:

Love Muriel’s Wedding so much. Makes me laugh and cry every time.
Brilliantly written and performed.
It’s timeless and a beautiful portrayal of female friendship.

FrankiesKnuckle · 08/11/2021 23:46

One of all time favourites. Desperately sad and heartwarming and funny all at once.

I've not watched in a while, but you've spurred me into watching tomorrow whist I'm off sick and feeling sorry for myself!

Coronawireless · 08/11/2021 23:48

Yes, I remember going to see it in the cinema - thought was going to be a comedy - it was much better than that.

lots33 · 08/11/2021 23:56

Great film. Agree it is desperately sad.

Rhonda is played by a young Rachel Griffiths who was subsequently known fir Six Feet Under and Sarah in Brothers and Sisters.

She also played Hilary Du Pre in Hilary and Jackie, another brilliant but underrated film,

Floogal · 09/11/2021 00:08

Loved it. Agree about Muriel's mum being a tragic character. Her Dad almost seeing the error of his ways at the end and him and Muriel forgive each other. Also seeing what's matters most is her best mate.

Also heard that the guys from ABBA liked the film so much they actually composed all the music to it. So much better than mama mia

Thursa · 09/11/2021 00:14

I thought it was absolutely depressing. I’ve never understood how it could be described as a comedy.

julieca · 09/11/2021 00:15

It is a wonderful film that is generally underrated. I suspect because it is about women with no love interest.

TinaYouFatLard · 09/11/2021 00:16

“I’m not alone - I’m with Muriel”

julieca · 09/11/2021 00:18

@thursa its about a very dysfunctional family with the resultant tragédy. But it is also strangely uplifting.

YourFinestPantaloons · 09/11/2021 00:21

I watched Strictly Ballroom a while ago which is super feel good, and thought I'd watch Muriel's Wedding because for some reason I also remembered it as a feel good film (maybe I just remembered the ABBA music). Hadn't watched it since my teens. My god, I didn't remember it being so ruddy dark!! It's a cult classic but very sad indeed, especially when you understand the nuances.

YourFinestPantaloons · 09/11/2021 00:22

Toni Colette is forever my favourite actress and she's so diverse I almost forget she played Maaaaaariel!

Seenoevil1 · 09/11/2021 00:26

What a film!
Great lines thrown in everywhere eg Muriel pretending to be engaged to Tim: '
'Tim who?'
'Tim Simms' 😃
Her mum played such a tragic part...the part where Muriel doesn't see her at her wedding makes me cry every time!
Yeah 'I'm not alone...I'm with Muriel'...great line. Fabulous film about friendship and family and learning to accept yourself 👏
