In thinking that Muriel's Wedding is the most heartbreaking film

Watching it tonight. It's so bloody sad.
But equally funny.
Her poor mum.
She's a beautifully written character, very flawed, and Toni Collette plays her perfectly.

It’s devastating, and brilliant. It’s a movie about deep trauma. The performance of Jeanie Drynan as Betty breaks my heart every single time. Clementine Ford has an Instagram highlight where she analyses it, which is well worth a read. In fact I might go re-read it now.

YourFinestPantaloons · 09/11/2021 00:34

I also cry when she ignores her mum and you can see the heartbreak in her face. And her awful dad leaves and tells his wife that she's the reason he hasn't done better in his political career (not all the dodgy dealings then Hmm). I think anyone who has ever felt depressed or worthless can really relate to the film.

She should've stayed with the sex on legs husband though GrinGrin

Wonderful film!

And muriels sexy South African swimmer husband is married to Fay Ripley in real life!

@Floogal

Loved it. Agree about Muriel's mum being a tragic character. Her Dad almost seeing the error of his ways at the end and him and Muriel forgive each other. Also seeing what's matters most is her best mate.

Also heard that the guys from ABBA liked the film so much they actually composed all the music to it. So much better than mama mia

Not quite - they didn’t compose the songs for the film but the story behind how the director fought for the right to use their music is brilliant:

YABU. It's beautifully acted I grant you. They guy playing her Dad in particular is wonderful. You know he's a total sleazebag, but the movie seems to tail off about 2/3rds of the way through. Almost as if they couldn't really think of a good ending but had to get something out there to shoot. Been better if they had shoved the script in a drawer for a while and come back later and had another go.

milkyaqua · 09/11/2021 00:53

It is certainly the only film I have ever seen where Toni Collette was likable.

smoko · 09/11/2021 01:23

Iconic Aussie movie, a real tear jerker & the older I get the deeper the plot feels. It’s classified as a black comedy, but for me it’s more a coming of age & redemption type movie. Muriel made some immature, selfish choices & learns to take responsibility.

Sad, funny & surprising all the way through. Made me love ABBA for life.

You can’t fight progress!

Chisandbiscuits · 09/11/2021 01:23

I absolutely hated this film and have never understood why it was so beloved. So much sadness and so many of the characters were loathsome. It made my skin crawl when I watched it at the cinema.

Catflapkitkat · 09/11/2021 02:17

I found it sad too. I remember seeing it at the cinema and wiping away a tear or two

sunkisses100 · 09/11/2021 02:30

Love Muriel's wedding, funny & sad at the same time. Went to see it on my first date with my now husband & knew we had a similar sense of humour when we both loved it, (discussed in great detail in Pizza Hut afterwards, ahhh I love the 90s!)

ThereWeAreThen79 · 09/11/2021 02:46

My favourite line from this film is one where they are having that Chinese meal with Japanese business men.
'Bill, you have done a lot for the people of this town...
Who told you that?
You did.'

I’M BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

groovergirl · 09/11/2021 02:52

Australian here. My mum and I love this film; I think we both understand the heart of darkness behind the sunshiny illusion. Director P.J. Hogan based it on his own family, including his older sister who stole money and ran off to Sydney, as Muriel does.

Jeanie Drynan (Betty Heslop) is the most awesome actor and we, her fans, keep waiting for her to re-surface. Maybe it's her choice to lie low, but she deserves a major role in something huge. Perhaps Hollywood could tap her, as it did Jacki Weaver, another brilliant Australian actor who can ably play those mature roles -- with a natural face!

PutThatDownNow · 09/11/2021 03:34

'my life is as good as Dancing Queen'

I may have used I Do, I Do, I Do as my wedding music.

Yamayo · 09/11/2021 08:07

I re-watched it with my teen the other week (hadn't seen it since cinema) and still as moving as remembered.
It was lovely watching it through her eye. She initially thought Muriel should have stayed with the fit swimmer (Grin) but in the end decided that friendship was more important than boys. Grin

Yamayo · 09/11/2021 08:07

Eyes even. Not just one eye.

I liked the way he turned out to be quite a nice bloke in the end.

Yes it’s a really sad film. Have loved Toni Collette ever since I saw her in it,

BruiserWoods · 09/11/2021 08:17

Yeh, like east is east i found it so funny the first watch and so sad the second.

MrsJamin · 09/11/2021 08:21

I've watched Muriel's Wedding countless times. I think it is very much about friendship - Rhonda and Muriel have such a lovely bond. I just love the dynamic between them and the bitchy girls who just end up all hating each other. It just really reminded me of school where I was like Muriel and knew so many bitchy girls who looked down their noses at me.

WomanStanleyWoman · 09/11/2021 08:27

‘Well, yes she did, but then I sucked her husband’s cock, and that’s when I realised we all make mistakes!’

AllyBama · 09/11/2021 08:33

Classic, I love this movie.

‘Stick your drink up your arse Tanya, I’d rather swallow razor blades than drink with you. Oh, and I’m not alone, I’m with Muriel’

Ultimate mike drop.

Neapolitanicecream · 09/11/2021 08:37

I have found it inspirational as also someone who is not conventional beautiful!!! Also relate to the girls cocktail season as being told I don’t fit the image of the group!!! Sadly very relatable

Hobbesmanc · 09/11/2021 08:42
