In thinking that Muriel's Wedding is the most heartbreaking film

Watching it tonight. It's so bloody sad.
But equally funny.
Her poor mum.
She's a beautifully written character, very flawed, and Toni Collette plays her perfectly.

“Nicole’s having an affair with Chuck. Muriel saw them fucking in the laundry on your wedding day. Stick your drink up your arse Tanya, I would rather swallow razor blades than drink with you. Oh, and by the way. I’m not alone. I’m with Muriel”…..one of my favourite film scenes of all time! But yes, her poor Mum and the dreadful father!!! And bloody Deirdre, who didn’t want him when the mum was gone and she would have to look after the kids!!!!

MareofBeasttown · 09/11/2021 08:55

Wonderful film and has aged so much better than so many romcoms where the heroine is treated like dirt by the hero because that's " romantic".

Wagsandclaws · 09/11/2021 09:01

One of my favourite films, Toni Colette was my favourite actress from then on, so glad she got into mainstream movies even though for the most part she doesn't play 'mainstream' roles.

Dd ( 29) and myself still say ..: oh your terrible Muriel!

IhateBoswell · 09/11/2021 09:04

One of my favourites, I couldn't wait for my daughter to be old enough to watch it.
She did, but found it more sad than enjoyable (in fact it came up as a suggestion the other day and she said "aww it's proper sad that film isn't it?") 😬

shylatte · 09/11/2021 09:08

I wouldn't have described Muriel as deeply flawed, more resultant of a highly dysfunctional family.

Floogal · 09/11/2021 09:12

One of my favourite bits is at the end, one of the bitchy girls screaming "I'm beautiful!!!". Then her face is contorted by anger and hate, making her look ugly.

Aprilx · 09/11/2021 09:17

I don’t think it is a bad film in terms of artistic merit, but I think it is miserable and depressing. Definitely nothing funny about it at all.

Thewiseoneincognito · 09/11/2021 09:27

It’s a classic that’s for sure. I haven’t watched it since my teens but I remember the tragedy of her mum and how much the ABBA music clashes with the overall tone of the story.

I wonder how popular it is with the under 25s?

YourFinestPantaloons · 09/11/2021 09:28

@WomanStanleyWoman

‘Well, yes she did, but then I sucked her husband’s cock, and that’s when I realised we all make mistakes!’

GrinGrinGrin

And a bit more controversial- "Chook's been accused of raping a Japanese tourist, which is ridiculous, he hates the Japanese" Shock
justswaying · 09/11/2021 09:29

Haven't watched it since I was about 14 but I've been inspired to have a lazy morning rewatching in bed Grin

Mariel Van Arkle was not half the person Muriel Heslop was!

And you're right. It is heartbreaking and Bill is a hideous husband and father who drives his wife to suicide and completely messes up his kids. It's a dark film illustrating some of the worst of human behaviour.

MissyB1 · 09/11/2021 09:34

@Redshoeblueshoe

In our house we regularly used to say You're terrible Muriel Grin
Dh and I say this all the time to each other!! Grin
MarieIVanArkleStinks · 09/11/2021 09:39

That's aside from the reason why 'Chook' is in the correction centre and the wholly unreasonable demands Rhonda makes of Muriel: despite her own tragic situation she wants her friend to effectively devote her life to caring for her and actually has the face to be put out when Muriel is loathe to take on such a huge responsibility. Both situations make Tania and her crew of 'mean girls' look like Mary Poppins by comparison.

Oh yes! And ABBA have just brought out a new album. I'm about to OD on nostalgia ...

GrandTheftWalrus · 09/11/2021 09:41

I haven't seen this film in years. I love it

Where is it available to watch?

3scape · 09/11/2021 09:42

I love movies that show the delusion / false front of modern life particularly when they're tearing all the ideas down. Muriel, the character is indeed terrible though. But isn't that the point of the film? Everyone is a fuck up

Spidey66 · 09/11/2021 09:42

One of my very favourite films.

It's on Amazon Prime at the moment.
GrandTheftWalrus · 09/11/2021 09:50

Excellent thanks. I know what I'm watching after dexter lol

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 09/11/2021 09:53

I love that film and Toni Collette is a legend. Yes, the mum breaks your heart although when you see the burned garden it is hard not to laugh.

I kind of see Rhonda's point - Muriel was happy to be attached at the hip while Rhonda was a healthy and fun woman, but the minute it changes Muriel bolts.
Needhelp101 · 09/11/2021 19:36

@PutThatDownNow

'my life is as good as Dancing Queen'

I may have used I Do, I Do, I Do as my wedding music.

It's the way Rhonda just scoffs "As if!" after Muriel says that :))

Oh yes, her poor mother! It's so sad. And the poor nice chap who likes her and sits at the back of her wedding looking heartbroken.. aw. It such a good film.

Mustardfan · 09/11/2021 20:03

I love everything that I’ve seen Toni Collete in, I think she’s an amazingly versatile actress.

Japingjaponica · 09/11/2021 20:04

I love that film..I also love Toni Collett in 'About a Boy'.

And I especially love how she appears in films with her own wrinkles.
Her not having a rubber face makes her more of a star in my opinion.

Floogal · 13/11/2021 21:19

Muriel's wedding discussion has reminded me of Tim. A bitter sweet romance with Australian humour. Mel Gibson plays a man with learning issues who begins a relationship with an older woman.
