The "denazification" baffled me too.

This article may help. Or leave me more baffled.

@borntobequiet

Hello all, long time no see. I’ve kept meaning to catch up on these threads… One thing that puzzles me. How do neo-Nazi Trump supporters square his support of Putin going into Ukraine to “de-Nazify” it with their own, uh, Nazism? Or is that a stupid question? (I suspect it is.)
There are none so blind as those who will not see.

It doesn't need to be rational. It doesn't need to make sense. If Doofus says it's ok OR if it's the opposite of what Biden does then it must be right.

Doofus uber alles as it were.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 27/02/2022 13:30

I feel that Putin must be getting rattled if he has started to feel the need to threaten Sweden and Finland: "If you join NATO you will suffer serious consequences."

Why does he think those two nations have not joined NATO already? Because they have always known that Russia is being led by a paranoid bully (this applies since 1917, name not needed, and also since 1949, name still not needed) who would throw everyone's toys out of the pram if they upset him by telling him they really, really didn't want to be part of his territory. (They did fight a bloody war to avoid it, in the case of Finland, but some people can't take a hint.)

As for "denazification", that's simple. Nazi is a boo-word, especially in Russia where they had a pretty bad time after Stalin stopped being an ally of Hitler's under the Molotov–Ribbentrop Treaty and Hitler invaded them. Best to apply it to your opponents, however inappropriate it may be, before everyone notices how very well it applies to you.

Incidentally, history repeats itself all over the place. The Soviets invaded Poland in 1939, about a fortnight after Hitler did, and their excuse? "Concern for ethnic Ukrainians and Belarusians." Definitely familiar, that. Stalin bit off more than he could chew with Finland, and it cost him the lives of as many as a million soldiers; I hope Ukraine is as impossible a lump for Putin to swallow, though I feel very sorry for the recruits who have been sent to fight in Ukraine without proper training. And indeed for anyone in the Russian army.

Deluded as ever.

www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/trump-cpac-putin_n_621aa6cee4b0d1388f15d68d

'ORLANDO, Fla. ― Former President Donald Trump on Saturday continued to claim that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not have invaded Ukraine had Trump been in the White House ― an assertion that ignores how Trump spent four years advancing policies that matched Putin’s longtime goals.

“It would have been so easy for me to stop this travesty,” Trump said, while continuing to perpetuate his lie that the 2020 election was “stolen” from him. “As everyone understands, this horrific event would not have happened if there wasn’t a rigged election and I was president.”'

Here's a thought.

If I were a Russian, I would know that only the State is realistically able to shut down my access to Twitter. So if my access to Twitter were shut down, I would know that the State must have done it, and it wouldn't be hard to work out that they had done it because they did not want me to see what was being said on Twitter. I would also be able to work out that this meant what was being said on Twitter was not favourable for the State, and I would definitely want to know why it was unfavourable: what had gone wrong with the war in Ukraine that I could not be allowed to know about?

Putin's state has shut down the Russian people's access to Twitter.

prettybird · 27/02/2022 17:24

According to db (his wife is Ukrainian with relatives in both Ukraine and Russia),
Russia doesn't have anything like the 'great wall of China' (ds has just completed his dissertation on the GFW and how "dissidents" still find means to communicate their protests) and it's relatively easy to circumvent internet restrictions via VPN's. If nothing else Russian people wouldn't see this as a restriction, more a challenge and easily overcome.

"Every hacker out there from Anonymous to Godknowswho are out to dismantle Putin's grip on the internet and far beyond, so..."

He's also pointed out that even if Twitter is shut down, many Ukrainians (like his wife) have relatives in Russia with whom they are in contact.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 27/02/2022 18:38

I regard this as thoroughly good.

But then, as if I were a Ukrainian, I am probably closer to a Cossack than to a kulak, and disinclined to respect central power.

Meant to add....the Cult was out in full force yesterday holding signs and flying US and 'Doofus Won' flags from local freeway overpasses.

So instead of trying to calm his 'bestie' down and asking him to deescalate, he's using the invasion to further The Big Lie. An absolutely disgusting specimen of pond scum.

With apologies to real pond scum.

Another timely reminder from Arieh Kovler

Zelensky asked Trump to sell him more Javelin anti-tank missiles. That's when Trump said "I would like you to do us a favour...." and go after Hunter Biden and a mythical Crowdstrike server.

This i a very good thread on Putin's information warfare on both the US and UK

twitter.com/carolecadwalla/status/1498056686548013062?s=21

It covers a lot of what has been discussed on these threads and the Brexit threads over the last few years.

That seems to me to have been (and still to be) a dangerous attempt to upset precedent so that anyone can sue a paper for reporting news they don't like and have a chance of being awarded punitive damages, thus stomping all over newspapers' willingness to print facts about politicians.

www.msnbc.com/white-house/state-of-the-union/live-blog/bidens-first-address-n1289787/ncrd1290554#liveBlogCards

'Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell tore into GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on Twitter after she and fellow Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert heckled Biden while he was speaking about his late son, Beau, and the U.S. service members who have been exposed to toxic burn pits in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.

“No one on her side will condemn her indecency,” Swalwell said of Greene, who faced tepid backlash from Republican leaders for speaking at a white nationalist conference on Friday.

Boebert yelled out as Biden mentioned Beau, an Army veteran who died from brain cancer in 2015. Despite their breach of etiquette, history suggests they are unlikely to face much condemnation from their own party. On the other hand, Greene and Boebert have both staked their careers on brazen provocation, not policy.'

It was horrible, wasn't it @lionheart? I could not believe the disrespect and the pictures that showed them giggling together like two fucking 'mean girls' heckling at a school play.

In some good news, the result of the TX gubernatorial primary is that it's going to be Greg Abbott (R) vs Beto O'Rourke (D) in the Nov midterms. Beto is extremely popular and missed being elected to Ted Cruz's Senate seat by thismuch. The bad news is the TX legislators have voted in some of the worst voting restrictions so far.

What a refreshing and positive change from Melania 'I don't care do u' Trump. Jill is what a real and modern First Lady is all about. Educated and truly involved in good causes, not some glorified clotheshorse who stamps her name on something without knowing what it really means.
