AIBU Kids eating in new car?

loonyluna12 · 06/11/2021 17:32

So… we bought a new, expensive car recently. My husband chose it , I was always happy with a second hand thing for school runs etc. He’s just freaked out because the kids have been eating in the car. ( we agreed they wouldn’t but they are always so hungry after school) I clean it once a week myself and chuck it through a car wash too. It’s looked after! He’s just said that he’s going to take the car away now because I broke our agreement. I have now been consigned to his really dirty and muddy work car as punishment. AIBU or is he ?

God I'd be a bit fed up too! Can't they wait till they got home? And don't put it through the car wash, it trashes the paint work.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 06/11/2021 17:34

It’s a family resource, so the family are entitled to use it. People who get prissy and precious about cars make no sense.

This. I’ve never let anyone eat in my car. The children can wait until they get home surely?
TurnUpTurnip · 06/11/2021 17:36

My kids were never allowed to eat in my sisters car, she would have been furious if I let them 😂 you did agree and have gone back on it so I can see why he’s annoyed

Bluebellbike · 06/11/2021 17:38

YABU. You said you were happy with the old second hand thing for school runs etc.

SickAndTiredAgain · 06/11/2021 17:38

He’s just said that he’s going to take the car away now because I broke our agreement.

Even if you agree that they shouldn’t eat in the car, this is petty punishing of OP for not meeting his standards.

Shouldbedoing · 06/11/2021 17:39

What are they eating in the car? Doner kebabs with all the fillngs? Croissants? Sherbert dip dabs are terrible on the upholstery

loonyluna12 · 06/11/2021 17:39

Btw the car is clean because I make sure it is, any remnants are cleaned up instantly! I just think it’s more important to allow hungry kids to have a snack. It’s a half hour drive home.

But you said you were happy with a second hand car, which is now what you've got.

He chose the new expensive car, which is now what he has.

Isn't that win/win ?

Clymene · 06/11/2021 17:40

How long is the school run?

Moonshine11 · 06/11/2021 17:40

What were they eating?

You came to an agreement as you broke it. Kids can wait till home to eat.

trumpisagit · 06/11/2021 17:40

My kids are a bit older but I think YABU to let them eat in the car.
I would let them eat between the school gate and car if necessary. Perhaps park a bit further away to enable this to happen.
DS2 was always starving coming out of school so I understand that part.

jagoda · 06/11/2021 17:41

He sounds like a knob. Who put him in charge of everything?

pinkblood · 06/11/2021 17:41

I don't let my kids eat in the car. Can't they eat something before they get into the car if they are that hungry but surely they can wait 30mins until home.

GoodnessGraciousMeOMy · 06/11/2021 17:42

I mean it's just easier for you to take the crap car isn't it? Just clean the crap car and let him look after the expensive one. He will chill out when the novelty wears off.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 06/11/2021 17:43

No eating in our cars either

Strangevipers · 06/11/2021 17:43

If they are going to eat in the car and make any sort of mess then use the dirty car not the new one. Teach the children to take pride I. Things they are lucky enough to have

Hercisback · 06/11/2021 17:43

That's one hell of a school run every day. Park 15 mins walk away and get them to eat while walking.

Sally872 · 06/11/2021 17:44

You agreed so I can see why he is annoyed. But as you clean up instantly I can't see why he cares. Also I am wondering how he knows? Are you always cleaning it up?

If the new, expensive car is getting untidy then he has a good point.

RedskyThisNight · 06/11/2021 17:45

Agree with others that children eating in cars is a disaster waiting to happen.
Surely they can wait until they get home to eat something (don't understand the new fangled thing to provide snacks constantly) or cna just have something before they get in the car?

carsonsmummy14 · 06/11/2021 17:45

Half hour to wait for food really isn't a long time, even for children.

Now you've been consigned to "the really dirty and muddy car" (that you were originally happy to have anyway) you can stick that through the car wash and look after it as well as you did with the new one can't you?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/11/2021 17:46

It’s daft to be so precious about a car. I wouldn’t stop my children having something to eat just in case there were a few crumbs.

You were silly to agree to it though! If he insisted on the pristine new car he should have been told in no uncertain terms you weren’t going to support him being precious about it.

Thank god I have my own car just for me and the kids!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/11/2021 17:47

Also he really doesn’t get to give you punishments or tell you you can’t use family items

I would not put up with that!

DietCokeChipsAndMayo · 06/11/2021 17:48

Jesus Christ it’s a car! A lump of metal on wheels, who cares if there’s a few crumbs in it?!
He’s being ridiculous

babyinthacorner1 · 06/11/2021 17:49

I think YABU on a safety basis. We won’t let our kids eat in the car due to the risk of choking. My Dnephew choked in the car once and we only realised because there were 2 adults in the car. If my DSis had been on her own, he would be dead.
