AIBU Kids eating in new car?

loonyluna12 · 06/11/2021 17:32

So… we bought a new, expensive car recently. My husband chose it , I was always happy with a second hand thing for school runs etc. He’s just freaked out because the kids have been eating in the car. ( we agreed they wouldn’t but they are always so hungry after school) I clean it once a week myself and chuck it through a car wash too. It’s looked after! He’s just said that he’s going to take the car away now because I broke our agreement. I have now been consigned to his really dirty and muddy work car as punishment. AIBU or is he ?

My car is a strict food free zone, I also don’t take it anywhere near a car wash as I don’t want it scratched.

Why spends thousands of pounds on something unless you’re going to look after it.

MrsWooster · 06/11/2021 17:51

You did agree to the no food rule which is a ridiculous rule IMO but my problem would be with the petty, Mr Mannering-esque reaction from your husband. Does he often talk to you like a disobedient office junior?

DixonD · 06/11/2021 17:53

@DietCokeChipsAndMayo

Jesus Christ it’s a car! A lump of metal on wheels, who cares if there’s a few crumbs in it?! He’s being ridiculous
And so is everyone else on this thread that agree with him.

Life’s too short to be an asshole.

nannybeach · 06/11/2021 17:53

My DGs have spilt drinks, sauce,DGD put chewing gum in the door pockets
They leave a load of crap behind them,so I've banned them from eating and drinking in the car

cultkid · 06/11/2021 17:54

Urgh my dad is like this

It's meant to serve a purpose

My kids have eaten sicked in and weed in all our Audi's etc

I'm not precious and our cars do not smell new

Currently got a 5 month old car that is very grubby inside 😌 but the kids are happy af!

coogee · 06/11/2021 17:54

Judging from the responses to this thread, quite a few people do care.

SpookyPumpkinPants · 06/11/2021 17:55

Who does he think he is 'taking it away'. Sounds like your Dad not your husband.

Fuck that for a game of soldiers!!!

I'd have rather the kids didn't eat in my car, but after school activities meant it was a necessity, or it was far too long between lunch & dinner for them.

Hoover & a damp cloth occasionally & it makes no difference!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 06/11/2021 17:56

Was the car bought with his money or family money? If it was bought using his own money I can see his point, but otherwise I would say he is being controlling to dictate what you can and can’t do in a car you have as much right to use as him (and are using for the school run so a task you are doing for the benefit of him as much as you, assuming the kids are his) and he is certainly being unreasonable to dictate which car you can use as if you are a naughty school child. It doesn’t sound like he is treating you as an equal in this partnership.

myheartskippedabeat · 06/11/2021 17:56

Eating in cars is always a grebby habit

They are not going to starve to death in 30 minutes

I'd be annoyed too

manywildhorses · 06/11/2021 17:56

They can wait half an hour surely. If not, give them an apple, mess free. What are they eating to make such a mess? It’ll take a while to get them out of the habit of it but I’d hate crumbs and mess in the car too. The only time out dc eat in the car is if we’re driving to a holiday in the U.K. so YABU for not making them wait.

zoemum2006 · 06/11/2021 17:57

I wouldn’t have agreed to not letting the kids eat in the car.

I also don’t like driving expensive/ precious cars. I love something with an imperfection so I can relax.

I’d drive his crappy car but tell him to stop making material things more important than people/ relationships.

I mean that’s how I think too, always have. But understand too that it’s expensive so am keeping it clean and tidy and don’t really see the problem.

You went back on your agreement, so now you can chuck the muddy car through the car wash and happily let your kids feed their faces in the second hand car that you said you’d be content with. 🤷🏻‍♀️

notso · 06/11/2021 18:05

In one of the nurseries I worked in there was a little boy who's Dad used to drive to collect him at 6:00 when the nursery shut. They would wait in the porch until 6:30 for the Mum to finish work as the Dad wouldn't have a child seat on the leather seats of his car.

GrumpyPanda · 06/11/2021 18:06

@GoodnessGraciousMeOMy

I mean it's just easier for you to take the crap car isn't it? Just clean the crap car and let him look after the expensive one. He will chill out when the novelty wears off.
Why on earth should she clean a car he has messed up? If he wants to swap, least he can do is get it into pristine condition first.

Aside from that, who in their right mind buys a brand new car that's going to lose a good part of its value within the first year or two? Hebis beingVVU, and OP has been VVU to simply give in to him on this, it doesn't sound like a collective decision.

Perfect solution! You get second hand car, he gets new car!
KeyWorker · 06/11/2021 18:12

I never let my DD eat in the car, but that’s because I’d be worried about choking and not being able to get to her. Can’t the kids just wait until you get home for a snack?

In fairness that sounds like you have anxiety issues. Ok, you wouldn't give kids hard sweets, but if you've got a long journey a drink, packet of Pom bears, raspberries or any age appropriate snack.

No way on a long journey would I stop every time a snack was needed, so no need on the trip home for school.

Xmasbaby11 · 06/11/2021 18:16

It wouldn't be a big deal to me if it's just crumbs. Can you choose a different, less messy snack and ask the kids to be more careful?

Hankunamatata · 06/11/2021 18:17

You agreed they wouldn't eat in the car then let them eat in the car yabu

Mine are not allowed to eat or drink in the car and its an old banger.

And actually the DH is not concerned about that, so not relevant.
godmum56 · 06/11/2021 18:18

a car is not a car until it smells of chips

On long journeys, not even water?

It's odd then that cars come with cup
Holders? Why?

You are so wrong....... it's crisps!! 😂

The point is he hasn’t even looked in the car to see if it’s a mess(it’s not!). It’s the fact that he saw a piece of snack rubbish that id put in the bin when I came in from the car. I am happy to drive the shit car but agree with another post that it definitely has to be properly cleaned first. It’s disgusting and smells.
