To not want to eat in Wetherspoons?

giveitarestplease · 27/10/2021 23:13

Popped out with BIL and OH today, I absolutely despise Wetherspoons but they love a bargain and aren't too fussy.

I'm not a snob in anyway shape or form I just can't stand it. I eventually went with them and sat in there and waited until they finished.

I just hate the old dirty pubs and how fast the rancid food comes out 🤢 the alcoholics that have been sat there since the moment they opened the doors on the morning.

I'd much rather go to one of our local independent cafes and have a nice lunch and I know it's not coming out of the microwave. I know it's not the same price bracket but you know what I mean.

They always laugh and joke and call me a snob and say I think I'm better than everyone else. But I'm really not and I don't think that.

YANBU, you couldn't pay me to eat in a Wetherspoons. I used to work in one.

malificent7 · 28/10/2021 06:05

I went to spoons for breakfast with a friend at 9.30. Yup...there were old mwn drinking pints.
It is chesp and cheerful...shame he voted brexit.

GremlinDolphin4 · 28/10/2021 06:07

I agree with you. Doesn’t make you a snob.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 28/10/2021 06:09
@FluffyBooBoo name changed for obvious reasons, but I work in that pub

And no, I haven't seen the morning alcoholics in the few years I've worked there either
Pop down to the one in Leith, you'll see them there 😂 They give the place a bit of character!

Soubriquet · 28/10/2021 06:18

I love their breakfasts. But I haven’t stepped foot in there since it emerged on how they treated their staff during lock down

Simonjt · 28/10/2021 06:18

Our spoons is lovely, the pizza is very good as well.

I used to work in a michelin star restaurant and many ‘posh’, ones all restaurants use microwaves, so I’m not sure why posters are pretending this doesn’t happen. Do people really think that chicken breast is pan fried and then oven roast to order?!

lmpeachment · 28/10/2021 06:22

You sound like a snob because you have come on here to tell us, and validate your comments/thoughts to your Dh et al.
You could have gone to a small cafe and sat by yourself.

AuntieMarys · 28/10/2021 06:25

I never go in Spoons( and have the Neverspoons app)
However I would take a Spoons over a Sam Smiths pub.

Nomorefuckstogive · 28/10/2021 06:27

Our local Weatherspoon’s is nice - clean and pleasant, but I wouldn’t choose to eat there, because the food is processed. If yours is grimy, full of hard drinkers, why would you? You don’t sound like a snob, you just have different tastes to your OH and BIL. Don’t worry about it and tell them it’s your choice next time.

Purplepeopleeaterz · 28/10/2021 06:31

Completely agree based on the Weatherspoons in our town though can't speak for others elsewhere, its mainly frequented by the hardened drinkers who are queueing to get in every morning and the atmosphere inside was quite uncomfortable on the few occasions I have been. The food was edible at best but not somewhere I would ever choose to go back too.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/10/2021 06:34

My mother is the biggest food snob i know. However, whenever they fly off to one of their cruises, they always stop at Wetherspoons at the airport for two reasons...

 1. its quick, convenient and consistent
 2. they do safe gluten free food (usually by substituting items,) so my dad won't be ill on the plane.

It was the first place we found that produced a separate gluten free menu.

Offmyfence · 28/10/2021 06:35

@sparepantsandtoothbrush

while telling his staff at the start of lockdown to “go get a job in Tesco” if they weren’t happy about not being paid through covid (until he was forced to)

I can't believe people are still spouting this bullshit

Did it not happen then?

I'm with you OP, I've tried Weatherspoons food, it was rank.

Wouldn't drink in their now, wouldn't want to live a brexiteers pocket.

Keladrythesaviour · 28/10/2021 06:42

I used to go as a teen and occasionally after as an adult for drinks gatherings etc. Now I won't give that company a penny of my money. Nothing to do with snobbiness, plenty to do with ethics.

FlippinFedUp21 · 28/10/2021 06:46

I haven't been to Wetherspoons since I ordered a burger there and when it was placed on the table a tiny insect crawling all over the bun Confused

FlippinFedUp21 · 28/10/2021 06:48

(This was pre-Brexit btw - so there is now more than one reason I won't set foot in a Wethers)

Zebradanio · 28/10/2021 06:53

Did it not happen then?

Possibly not quite like this no, seeing as Tim Martin forced the papers who did this to issue an apology and take back their comments, which he then put out in his own Wetherspoons publication to set the record straight.

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 28/10/2021 06:56

Wetherspoons all depends which one you go to. I wouldn’t go to certain ones, but others close to where I live are great. Some definitely have people on the ale at 9.30, others don’t.
If you have a decent one near you it’s a great place to take the kids really as there isn’t a wait for food and it’s not really much more than going to McDonald’s, and you can have a drink too.

But like with literally everything in the world, you do you.

Worried234 · 28/10/2021 07:00

@giveitarestplease

I did speak up but they want to eat there so I sit with them. I'm not a snob I'm far from it infact! I just don't enjoy the atmosphere or the food. Think my mum and dad would die a bit inside if they seen me eating in there 🤣

whiteroseredrose · 28/10/2021 07:00

Ours varies according to time of day.

In one of my jobs lots of people met in Spoons for breakfast before work and I was pleasantly surprised. Fresh food and not a drunk in sight.

Saturday night it's full of sixth formers because it is cheap!

It's not dirty nor was the food bad.

Fangdango · 28/10/2021 07:01

Just to clarify on Brexit - I don't care how he voted or what he says on the news etc. I objected to the pro Brexit manifesto on pub doors and tables, the posters, the replacing all foreign beer with British stunt and the pro Brexit beer mats. I voted remain but would have had a problem with similar for thar side too.

Wife2b · 28/10/2021 07:01

You come across so snobby OP, you say you’re not but the things you’re saying come across as otherwise.

Some Wetherspoons are old and run down with the local alcoholics who are there from dawn til dusk (though I’ve only encountered one).

My local has log burners that you can sit around. Very cosy on a cold night. It’s cheap and cheerful food. I’d recommend you try the pizza Wink

To not want to eat in Wetherspoons?
GnomeDePlume · 28/10/2021 07:02

The 'spoons is the only decent pub in my town so it's where we go if we fancy a pub meal. The alternatives make 'spoons look like fine dining.

In general I like the atmosphere. No music means we can talk and it doesn't get taken over by any single group.

Lots of places treat their staff pretty poorly. If I only thought about that there are few places I would be able to spend my money.

MsTSwift · 28/10/2021 07:05

I went into one in error looking for a takeaway coffee before a long journey. It was full of elderly men with no teeth drinking alcohol for breakfast so left immediately minus coffee.

skodadoda · 28/10/2021 07:10

@TimeForTeaAndG

I'm with you. Though I also now don't frequent Wethersoons because Tim whatshisname is a dickhead who doesn't deserve my hard earned cash.
Agreed
HelloDulling · 28/10/2021 07:14

Completely agree, OP. The one nearest me has the same all-day drinkers sat outside smoking every day from the moment they open. Not the sort of environment I would enjoy.
