To not want to eat in Wetherspoons?

Popped out with BIL and OH today, I absolutely despise Wetherspoons but they love a bargain and aren't too fussy.

I'm not a snob in anyway shape or form I just can't stand it. I eventually went with them and sat in there and waited until they finished.

I just hate the old dirty pubs and how fast the rancid food comes out 🤢 the alcoholics that have been sat there since the moment they opened the doors on the morning.

I'd much rather go to one of our local independent cafes and have a nice lunch and I know it's not coming out of the microwave. I know it's not the same price bracket but you know what I mean.

They always laugh and joke and call me a snob and say I think I'm better than everyone else. But I'm really not and I don't think that.

Agree ,horrid chain.Stick to local independents ,
Wetherspoons is the pits
You are not a snob
spend where your cash makes a difference
We avoid big chains like the plague ,,,.....

Mybalconyiscracking · 29/10/2021 18:54

Our Spoons is full of young people having a good time because the food and booze are cheap and plentiful.
Nought wrong with that!

HangingOver · 29/10/2021 18:55

I used to go there all the time in my twenties. You can get banjaxed for under a tenner (although drinking Old Rosie is pretty much the fastest way of getting the police to come around without using the telephone).

Bobbins36 · 29/10/2021 18:56

I hear you. It’s vile. Beige food and the guy who owns it is a prize knob. Not getting my cash.

EnidFrighten · 29/10/2021 19:01

I agree with you. However, some are worse than others, it depends a lot on the building and how well lit and cleaned they are. The for is rank though.

I guess they serve a purpose for lots of people who wouldn't otherwise have anywhere to go or who would be unable to afford anywhere else.

I only go in them if I need to shit!

Againstmachine · 29/10/2021 19:02

Who is the guy who owns it as there isn't just one person, Tim Martin doesn't own wetherspoons his share holding is 22%

Thatswhatmamasaid · 29/10/2021 19:05

I'm 100% with you OP.

saraclara · 29/10/2021 19:05

I swear that half the posters who are ranting about how awful Wetherspoons is, have never actually visited one (much less eaten in one).

To be fair I was snobby about them until I actually started being dragged along to a few.
The food is no worse than anywhere else that charges similar prices. And the kitchens are probably far cleaner than other places. They're super strict about H&S and hygiene.

RampantIvy · 29/10/2021 19:09

And if you go to any village pub out in the country anywhere it will always have the regular old stalwarts who've been keeping the pub going

Grin That more or less describes our local village pub to a T.

I wouldn’t choose to eat there but I’d join people if they wanted to go there. I’d be happy with scampi and chips or a pizza.

Same here.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 29/10/2021 19:13

I hate Wetherspoons. Soul destroying places.

Often in nice buildings but inside they're like massive barns, no atmosphere aside from that served up by the hideous swirly carpets and packs of 50-something men in short sleeved shirts (that their wives bought them in the Next sale) roaming about looking to chat up a tasty bit of skirt.

liveforsummer · 29/10/2021 19:16

Where the hell did you go? All the Wetherspoons I've been to are not like this, or are you exaggerating a tad to get your point across?

I used to work in a few and the description is not wrong - however surely we can all manage a panini or wrap rather than sit there protesting when accompanying people .
StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 29/10/2021 19:17

Oh, Enid!

bizboz · 29/10/2021 19:18

Glad to hear there are many others who won't go into one because of that twat Tim Martin and his hypocritical views.

Hertsgirl10 · 29/10/2021 19:20

In my local one they refused me & the kids entry for not having id 😂 was only going in cos it was closest to the park we was in to eat food. Actually turned us away like we was trying to get into the Ivy. Still can’t get over that.

Michellelovesizzy · 29/10/2021 19:21

The steak is actually really nice.... the pizza isn’t bad either but the wine is a bit crap comes out of tap😂

The fact he has any shares puts me off adding to their profit. But mainly it’s because they are hellholes.
marktayloruk · 29/10/2021 19:30

I like Wetherspoons. If you don't leave it at that

Againstmachine · 29/10/2021 19:31

But many other pub chains are based in Caymen islands, they sound like good people.

Tzimi · 29/10/2021 19:39

Weatherspoons supports brexit, and for that reason alone, I can't stand their pubs.

Ilikegherkins · 29/10/2021 19:42

I really don’t like them but love the beautiful buildings they have brought back to life.

These buildings have been saved by Wetherspoons.

whynotwhatknot · 29/10/2021 19:53

The one in our town is voted as one of the worst in the country it is a shithole full of alkies and it smells

but ive been in some beautiful ones elsewhere and the food isnt bad-if the pizza is microwaved id love to know how it taste so fresh

I am resolutely not a snob, but I would also not eat in Spoons, mainly because of the views of the proprietors. but also because their staff are badly paid and bullied.

Local cafes and even some other chains are definitely more my thing.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHaands · 29/10/2021 20:17

I like Spoons and with the right company, the atmosphere is great. Have had many fantastic works nights out at various Spoons and DH and I are not above walking into town and treating ourselves to a steak and a few wonderfully affordable drinks sometimes.

If we wanted to go somewhere classier and more expensive then we would.

IMO (and to reiterate) it’s the company ther makes the atmosphere

Lostonthefell · 29/10/2021 20:18

Well I vote for Wetherspoons here. Some of the locations certainly prop up local high streets in a commercial sense and I love the way they keep listed buildings in modern beneficial use. The food is the food. The service is the service and the loos are always clean in my experience. As far as pub grub is concerned you can definitely do worse!! They always e non alcoholic choices and veggie food so why not…

danblack87 · 29/10/2021 20:23

Definitely coming across snobbish and scared to death your parents will walk in and catch you. Give other people the courtesy of not believing they are all piss heads at 11 am in the morning. Some have been on night shift and need a breakfast/ the elderly like to meet there for tea/coffee at a reasonable price and a good old chin wag .. sure you will get some people who will be in drinking early (So what? Maybe they do not have such a great life as you have, are lonely, have lost someone??? Do not but so judgemental and PLeeeeeeeeeeeeAAASE, you are just that 'type' by the sounds that you always just 'the book by it's cover#. You hate it that much, just don't go (wld love to hear what BIL and OH say once they are home .... oh, to be a fly on the wall. Sad.
