To not want to eat in Wetherspoons?

Popped out with BIL and OH today, I absolutely despise Wetherspoons but they love a bargain and aren't too fussy.

I'm not a snob in anyway shape or form I just can't stand it. I eventually went with them and sat in there and waited until they finished.

I just hate the old dirty pubs and how fast the rancid food comes out 🤢 the alcoholics that have been sat there since the moment they opened the doors on the morning.

I'd much rather go to one of our local independent cafes and have a nice lunch and I know it's not coming out of the microwave. I know it's not the same price bracket but you know what I mean.

They always laugh and joke and call me a snob and say I think I'm better than everyone else. But I'm really not and I don't think that.

You may well have been disappointed in the decision to go to Wetherspoons for lunch, but I think you were incredibly rude not accepting the consensus and just going with the flow, finding the least offensive menu item to order, and pretending you were enjoying spending time with your family.

Chatterboxy · 28/10/2021 15:17

I really don’t like weatherspoons at all…. In our local one, you have to wipe your feet on the way out! The food is microwaved rubbish, and as someone else has mentioned, I’d rather spend my money at an independent cafe/venue.

hamsterchump · 28/10/2021 15:22

Saying you're not a snob after every sentence doesn't actually work to cancel out all the snobbish things you say you know. You clearly are a snob and sound like a snob to everyone else but you're in denial I guess.

What a beautiful building PumpkinsandTea, what did it used to be?

FluffyBooBoo · 28/10/2021 15:33

I think people might be surprised at the number of professional kitchens that use microwaves, including ones that cost three times the price of 'spoons.

longwayoff · 28/10/2021 15:34

Lovely building Pumpkins. But. Tim Martin. No.

tickledtiger · 28/10/2021 16:01

The last time I went to a Wetherspoons it was a bit like you describe it op.

I would rather go to a cafe too what’s wrong with having a preference?

Pretty much every gastro pub for a start. Do you really think places are whipping up your pasta or mashed potatoes from scratch for each order?
Lucythewonderdog · 28/10/2021 16:07

I haven't been to Spoons for ages and I now really want their hot chicken wings

Classica · 28/10/2021 16:16

Wetherspoons pubs are the most dismal and depressing places.

YANBU.

Platax · 28/10/2021 16:16

I used to go to Wetherspoons when picking up DD from university in Wales. They did rather splendid Bangers and Mash with Welsh Lamb sausages and minted gravy, I'm now tempted to go back there and order another plateful.

Some is microwaved, plenty isn't. Their breakfasts certainly aren't, nor are their steaks.
FangsForTheMemory · 28/10/2021 16:23

I had fish and chips in a 'Spoons about five years ago. It was a small town and there was nowhere else open. The food was basic but perfectly edible and the staff were lovely.

Tim Wotsit is awful though, and I didn't know this at the time but wouldn't eat there now.

BigYellowHat · 28/10/2021 16:27

I don’t know what you’re talking about. Our two local Wetherspoon’s serve some lovely food!

And yes, you sound like a snob 😂

TwistMyOlive · 28/10/2021 16:43

I love a cosy old pub with a fire place, a little dark, a darts board and little old men nursing a pint or 2 just sitting staring into space

Glugglejug · 28/10/2021 16:55

@sparepantsandtoothbrush I mean, he fucking did. But great job shilling for a gammon worth £££££ there. What on Earth is wrong with you? Wink

LittleGwyneth · 28/10/2021 17:13

I wouldn't eat there unless it was in extremis (I mean, I was really, really, really hungry).

FrankGrillosWrist · 28/10/2021 17:35

You sound like my sister OP, she thinks that if she pays more it ain’t frozen or microwaved. We recently went out & paid £600 for 12 of us, it was full of your kinda people. We’d normally pay around £200 for a much better meal, although in a bit if a scrubby boozer with great atmosphere. I don’t mind a Wethers at all 🍻

Who are the op’s kinda people and how did you assess that the other people in the restaurant fit into this category?

There’s something ironic about posters taking a pop at the op’s perceived snobbishness and then judging other people.

MostlyNormalSometimesOdd · 28/10/2021 18:16

It is perfectly reasonable not to want to go within 100 yards of a Wetherspoons, ghastly pubs owned by a ghastly character and full of ghastly people.

shakingmytambourineatyou · 28/10/2021 18:30

Winter gardens wetherspoons, Harrogate

To not want to eat in Wetherspoons?
Classica · 28/10/2021 18:33

Yes, it's amazing how Wetherspoons take lovely old buildings and turn them into sticky carpeted holes.

Microwaves are just bits of kitchen kit same as the hob or oven. Lots now have hi tech kit, water baths, dehydraters etc.

You want something basic try a burger van by the roadside where you can watch your bacon being griddled with the egg, nice and fresh.

shakingmytambourineatyou · 28/10/2021 18:34

Sorry, pumpkins. Just read 3 pages of posts and had to put this photo up! Then saw your post. My local wetherspoons is not so grand, but it is clean and comfy. If I had to use a pub on my own, it's where I would go.

He really didn't. I know plenty of people who work there, my son and neighbour included. Nobody was sacked.
