Cold Pizza in lunchbox?

302 replies

PizzaInLunchbox · 26/10/2021 13:31

Odd or fine?

My 7yo is saying it’s her favourite (not warm or hot cold) and she wants it for lunch at school.

I’d obviously cook the pizza the night before let it cool right down. Would be just cheese and tomato as she doesn’t like any other kind of pizza.

WIBU to put a cold slice of pizza in her lunchbox instead of sandwiches? I’d also include a small biscuit (like a penguin), cucumber and/or carrot sticks, an apple or banana, and then some cocktail sausages or similar.

Just pondering for next week when shes back.

Absolutely fine, pizza is the food of the gods- your DD is a genius!

daisypond · 26/10/2021 16:39

It’s fine.
I don’t see why pizza has to be demonised as a “treat food”. It’s just food - bread, cheese, tomato and other toppings. Completely normal, like a sandwich or a wrap. Probably better for you than a yoghurt stuffed full of sugar and thickeners..

withlotsoflove · 26/10/2021 16:49

@vajingleberry

Of course we have treats at the weekend but she prefers a salad to anything else and considers cucumber to be a treat!

Are you really, really sure that this is true?

If she considers cucumber to be a treat then what in Gods name are you feeding her the rest of the time?

Houmous probably! 😂
HereWeGoAgains · 26/10/2021 16:55

I couldn’t think of anything less of a treat than cucumber. Maybe celery.

DampSquidGames · 26/10/2021 16:58

Is it any worse than a white bread cheese sandwich?

It all depends what you do with the cucumber.

@raffle

Not much different to a cheese and tomato sandwich in most respects
I’m neither for or against the pizza but the difference between a cheese and tomato sandwich and a slice of pizza is that pizza sauce tends to contain sugar but people don’t generally sprinkle sugar on their sliced tomatoes. Of course it depends what bread you use…

Off the top of my head: a wholemeal wrap with shit and hummus; waterboarding; a strip search by the Lunchbox Police.
ShowMeHow · 26/10/2021 17:07

Cold pizza, pasta bolognese, quiche and even chicken nuggets and hotdogs (good sausages mind) make it to school lunchboxes here lol at least ds then eats something at lunchtime. I believe this is better than school menu though.

But the amount of sugar in tomato sauce is tiny like a teaspoon per can of tomatoes, if you use it at all. Plus cooked tomatoes contain lycopene, which I have no idea what it is but is a Good Thing apparently.

Plus of course a lot of bread has sugar in it, but if I'm making pizza I only use flour, yeast, oil, salt and water in the dough.

Big thumbs up to cold pizza. When my kids were little we made pizza every Saturday for supper, and Monday packed lunch was always cold pizza. We now occasionally order pizza in and a couple of slices get put in lunchboxes.

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 26/10/2021 17:10

I love some of the replies!

When I were a lass at secondary school in the 90s my lunch consisted of a can of coke, a snickers and about 5 fags! Grin

hotmeatymilk · 26/10/2021 17:20

A cheese and tomato sandwich?
You mean a HIGH-FAT PROCESSED DAIRY and STEALTH FRUIT sugar-spiking bread BOMB

KirstenBlest · 26/10/2021 17:27

You can make your own bread and cheese and grow your own tomatoes

Silvercatowner · 26/10/2021 17:29

wholewheat hummus

What on earth is wholewheat hummus??

hotelharibo · 26/10/2021 17:29

@Brieandcamembert

Not great having pizza sausage and chocolate as a lunch. Very nutritionally poor even with a couple of veg sticks thrown in.

How about wholewheat hummus and veg wraps or cream cheese / chicken sandwiches. No sausage chocolate or pizza but maybe a yoghurt and fruit with a wrap or sandwich?

Pizza is an ocassional treat not a school lunch.

Seriously Hmm

Oh... it was a joke. Sorry. Coeliac here and panicking...
Peppaismyrolemodel · 26/10/2021 17:30

@melonhead

This will sound odd but I think it depends on how you cut it as to how the lunch box police will view it!!

Triangles = lazy mum leftovers

Squares = Italian lunch!

Grin So true
hotelharibo · 26/10/2021 17:31

Mine love pizza in their lunchbox.

Mine is homemade but that's due to allergies

MummySharkDoodoododoo · 26/10/2021 17:34

I do this a lot for one of mine. He tends to have things in his lunch such as pizza, chicken nuggets, pasta etc - all cold.
He is Autistic and it's kind of the best options out of the things he will willingly eat.

lunkitsmum · 26/10/2021 17:35

I’ve definitely done it (though not with sausage and much to my kids annoyance chocolate isn’t allowed in our school in packed lunch box)it’s always on the schools cooked dinner menu once a week for my primary aged kids and daily for secondary aged so they can’t think it’s that bad!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 26/10/2021 17:37

Stunt apple 😂 definitely remember those days!

We love houmous in our house & cold pizza too.
Though have never combined but on the back of this thread did a find a recipe for a houmous & veggie pizza

StaplesCorner · 26/10/2021 17:40

Aw OP this is like catnip for some MNetters as you can now see - you literally sent out invites to criticise your parenting! Schoolboy error. 😂

StaplesCorner · 26/10/2021 17:42

I missed the sadness and dust post - I’d say dust is only an occasional treat though. No wonder we have an obesity crisis, think of the NHS and so on. So just the slice of sadness then. Hth

Cuck00soup · 26/10/2021 17:44

I’ve just realised that I sometimes take a whole stunt salad to work. And then buy a toasted at the cafe next door.

Imagine how much salt there must be in a ham & cheese toastie. Made with white bread.
