Cold Pizza in lunchbox?

PizzaInLunchbox · 26/10/2021 13:31

Odd or fine?

My 7yo is saying it’s her favourite (not warm or hot cold) and she wants it for lunch at school.

I’d obviously cook the pizza the night before let it cool right down. Would be just cheese and tomato as she doesn’t like any other kind of pizza.

WIBU to put a cold slice of pizza in her lunchbox instead of sandwiches? I’d also include a small biscuit (like a penguin), cucumber and/or carrot sticks, an apple or banana, and then some cocktail sausages or similar.

Just pondering for next week when shes back.

It’s fine, but would pizza swirls/pinwheels travel better and seem more like a lunchbox meal? They’re very easy to make and are nice cold the next day, all the same ingredients pretty much

JetRocket · 26/10/2021 15:58

I’ve always taken cold pizzas to work for my lunch. I make them myself sometimes.

It’s essentially just bread, sauce and cheese nutritionally it’s not vastly different to a sandwich it’s only the way we view it which is different.

I’d probably try my luck ditching the chocolate biscuit and put it in with a yogurt or fruit as she might well buy the pizza being her ‘treat’ but no biggie if not, nothing wrong with a biscuit Grin

I couldn't put it better myself Halloween Grin

'I’m all for pizza whatever time of the day it’s fancied! But I also don’t see the MN jokes/sarcasm about hummus- in loss of cultures it a staple food, like in Greek countries, Israel etc. One of my parents is Israeli so my kids wouldn’t think twice about eating hummus- it’s not even that healthy really!!!'
You could say that about anything you're brought up eating. Although i would say exactly the same.about sprouts too ! You are allowed to dislike something and view it as being unpopular with the dc in your circle.

Cookingbynumbers · 26/10/2021 15:59

Ds has it every Monday as a school cooked lunch so it’s totally fine.
With a piece of cake too usually.
His school wouldn’t be keen on the choc bar but swop that for a small cake bar or similar and it sounds fine to me.

ShrinkingViolet9 · 26/10/2021 15:59

This drives me absolutely potty. You're right schools will approve of the yogurt or cereal bar more than a chocolate biscuit but the only real difference between them is the cost! Cereal bars and commercial flavoured yogurts are no better (or worse) than a chocolate biscuit IMO, but they are a lot more expensive per portion. A fantastic marketing job done on, it seems, the whole country, including those who should know better.

I've heard of schools where children who take a packed lunch aren't permitted to have a Penguin or Club type chocolate biscuit in their lunch box, but their fellow classmates who have a cooked lunched are served chocolate stodge and custard and similar puddings for dessert. Madness.

Tianatiers · 26/10/2021 16:04

This is all my DD will eat. If I put sandwiches in her lunchbox she doesn’t touch them. I do feel bad but then I think it’s probably not much different to a cheese and tomato sandwich as a pp said.

ElftonWednesday · 26/10/2021 16:05

Perhaps they could have the pizza cut into soldiers to dip into houmous.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 26/10/2021 16:06

@ShrinkingViolet9

Yes this is pretty common!!

At my school the kids can get a pan au choc for breakfast, a pizza for lunch with a cake every single sodding day!

SevenZebrasDancing · 26/10/2021 16:08

@HereWeGoAgains

Crudités is something else that always get brought up on MN as the solution to all dietary dilemmas.

Although in real life I never hear them called that and my kids don’t eat them anyway.

Please don't start criticising the crudites. It's about the only thing i can get into my food refusing DS1 that still makes me feel rather less like the shit parent I know myself to be.

(he eats processed shit including pizza and cucumber and carrots. Sometimes I even blog it).

Wroxie · 26/10/2021 16:09

Would you send a cheese and tomato sandwich if that's what she wanted? I imagine you wold, without a second thought. So there is your answer.

cansu · 26/10/2021 16:11

FGS I work in a school that does not obsess over kids' lunches thank god. Yes, it is absolutely fine to have some pizza. We have kids with all kinds of lunches including some who bring soup, pasta, sandwiches, crackers, chocolate biscuits, crisps and even god forbid chocolate. The lunchbox police need to be more concerned about the kids who do not get enough food. The number of kids who don't eat their so called 'healthy' lunches would I think surprise people. It is as usual often more about showing that you are a 'good' parent. The obsession with hummous and carrots is ridiculous.

i agree. I put in an apple every single day for my Dcs. I call it the 'stunt apple'. It;s the apple that is for the visual consumption of the lunchbox police rather than for the actual consumption of the DCs. On fridays i take the stunt apple out of their rucksacks and cook it down with sugar and cinnamon for DH's Saturday morning porridge.

(This is a true story).

AliceMcK · 26/10/2021 16:17

I regularly give mine pizza. Sometimes it’s leftovers from night before sometimes I make it especially that morning for lunch. I also give my youngest naan bread for breakfast, if it’s what she wants and I know she will eat it I don’t see any difference between sticking bread in a toaster or naan bread in the oven for 5 mins.

talkingtoclarry · 26/10/2021 16:19

For those saying pizza is not an appropriate school lunch, my DS has it as part of his school dinners each and every Tuesday.
Pasta Monday
Pizza Tuesday
Roast Wednesday
Curry Thursday
Fish and chips Friday
Along with cake/ice cream/jelly on offer each day.

Personally I only eat cold pizza when hungover but if your daughter wants it, I don’t see the problem.

00100001 · 26/10/2021 16:20

There literally one person saying that...

BadNomad · 26/10/2021 16:25

I can't believe you give your child lunch.

MilduraS · 26/10/2021 16:27

Where was this idea when I was a child? I used to hate sandwiches in packed lunches but would have happily eaten cold pizza.

FanFckingTastic · 26/10/2021 16:28

Cold Pizza is absolutely fine, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

My kids tend to have leftovers for their lunch pretty frequently. As well as the usual sandwiches and fruit, they've also had the odd slice of cold pizza, some leftover veggie pasta, some leftover stew in a thermos flask (oooo, with some yummy dumplings in there, very naughty!) Just for the nutrition pearl-clutchers on here, they also get crudities too, but I have to say that they much prefer the cold pizza....

teatime9999 · 26/10/2021 16:28

I don't see what the difference would be between pizza and a cheese/tomato sandwich, nutritionally. Why not? Especially fine if you're including fruits and vegetables.

Horizons83 · 26/10/2021 16:30

Sounds lovely! If you are worried about judgy lunch monitors then make it into a Stromboli!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stromboli_(food)

God I really want one now.. need to stop reading the thread about things to bring back from New York.

Sparklfairy · 26/10/2021 16:30

Is pizza really 'junk'? Let's face it, it's glorified cheese on toast...

stingofthebutterfly · 26/10/2021 16:34

@Kentuckycarby

Pizza is an ocassional treat not a school lunch

Is it?

I guarantee you there's pizza on the school lunch menu once a week. School lunch companies therefore determine it to be school lunch. End of discussion Grin
statetrooperstacey · 26/10/2021 16:34

No problem with it , my kids take samosas, deep fried,🤷‍♀️and as one of them has to eat his lunch walking around outside it’s much easier and tastier than a squashed sandwich. He also can’t fit a proper lunchbox in his bag as he has too much stuff to carry all day, no lockers.

mumwon · 26/10/2021 16:38

For one of my dc (difficult eater) I use to give cold homemade left over pilau with yogurt & cucumber & carrot sticks
& I don't see the difference between cold pizza & cheese Cornish Pasty as a choice
