I’ve got thrush. Never had it before, it’s fucking awful. To start with, it was just so itchy I wanted to cry. Now I’m using canisten and it burns. I literally had a panic attack tonight and had to wash it off. Is it supposed to hurt when I put the gel on? How do I get rid of the thrush if the cure feels like putting salt in a wound. Do I just need to man up and get on with it? Or does this sound like somethings not right? I called the doctor when it started because I’ve never had thrush so wasn’t sure this is what it is. But they won’t see me. Said to use over the counter medication, but what if it’s not thrush? How long do I wait, with my fanny burning off? Argh!

Take the oral tablet instead

dementedpixie · 23/10/2021 22:42

Or the pessary

gamerchick · 23/10/2021 22:43

Get the pessery combo and use the pessery just before you go to bed.

Yes the cream feels a little warm but it passes.

You can get a test OTC that tells you if you have thrush or BV. If you want to check.

If you can't cope. Go to your local GUM clinic and they'll help you.

Wisewordswouldhelp · 23/10/2021 22:43

I was the same you need the oral tablet

Taoneusa · 23/10/2021 22:44

You can use natural yoghurt topically. It’s very cooling and corrects the ph. Issue.

FinishWhatWeStarted · 23/10/2021 22:46

I had raging thrush for weeks, did all the pesseries and tablets. Lost it on day and used a medicine syringe to administer natural yogurt on and around. Cleared it up so fast.

1dathasnoname · 23/10/2021 22:47

I agree with others, definitely get the pessary

hensintheskirting · 23/10/2021 22:48

The cream burned me too... take the tablets, don't buy Cannesten ask the pharmacist and get the unbranded oral tablets. They're about £4 vs £15 for Cannesten. Take one and then 72 hours (I think, check) later take another. If it comes back, go to the dr and get a prescription for the tablets.
I had recurring thrush for about a year and kept it in check with the pills, then one day - it never came back 🤷🏻‍♀️.

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 23/10/2021 22:49

Pessary. And cut out all yeast and sugar for a bit.

0nlyMe · 23/10/2021 22:52

The oral tablet ASAP, cheapest brand will do.
Yoghurt on a sanitary towel.
DO NOT scratch or rub it. It will make it worse and then it’ll definitely hurt/burn when you put the cream on.

giftswap2020 · 23/10/2021 22:56

The only thing I felt an instant relief from, almost a cooling effect, was diluted tee tree oil on a tampon and it then inserted. The relief was indescribable. I hope it helps.

HermioneWeasley · 23/10/2021 22:58

Get a couple of fluconazole tablets

Eat lots of live yoghurt

Take a good probiotic (lamberts are good)

If you can’t bear canisten cream, consider balance activ which is a ph balancer

Peraltiago · 23/10/2021 23:01

My Dr told me a lot of women are allergic to Canesten, after it similarly irritated me. You can get a thrush cream from the GP that has a different active ingredient. Or as PP have said, inserting natural yoghurt really helps and is soothing.

Notonthenewrug · 23/10/2021 23:02

I feel your pain. I get recurring thrush (touchwood not had it for around 4 months). I got it 4 times in 6 weeks!!
The cream can sting if your sore/have any broken skin.
I've always found he pessary more effective and symrpms ease quicker. My last course of treatment involved a pessary every week for 3 months and 3 tablets.

MilduraS · 23/10/2021 23:09

The cream will sting if you've already been itching like crazy. Agree that the pessary helps when it's really bad. I also buy a big tube of clotrimazole cream (generic canesten) that I keep in the house at all times. I use it liberally at the first sign of itching and it's pure relief.

EmilyBennetWitch · 23/10/2021 23:11

Ok thanks! I’ll head to the shops tomorrow for the pessary and the yoghurt! Love the idea of putting it on a pad!

I bought the unbranded oral tablet online; cheaper than buying branded products

MumofSpud · 23/10/2021 23:28

I am suffering too at the moment.
I have been putting the cream in and yes get a little burning - I assume that it is because I am 'tender' due to itchingConfused
I have found I have v specific triggers that I need to avoid:

  • Nutella on white bread (I just have to have this once - it's sadly not worth it!)
  • Pineapple juice (fresh or from concentrate)
  • ALL fruit juice that is made from concentrate - including if used in cocktailsAngry
-and now my new one this week is giant marshmallows I guess it is the processed sugars.
BeenHereForAges · 23/10/2021 23:35

Another vote for cheap brand oral tablet here.

Nonbio46 · 23/10/2021 23:37

I’m lucky that I haven’t had thrush for a long while but I recommend taking probiotics ( I swear by Yakult). Xx

pinksquash13 · 23/10/2021 23:40

I stopped my recurring thrush by chucking all my knickers away. Only buy cotton and replace regularly.

NorthSouthcatlady · 23/10/2021 23:43

Random question: is it definitely thrush and not BV? You can get tester things from the chemist so you can check

I’m a long term thrush sufferer and it’s hell!! Top tips are:
-use the internal tablets. They work better than the oral tablets in my experience
-drink lots of water
-cotton knickers (apart from special occasions)
-watch the alcohol and sweets (especially the alcohol)
-have probiotic drinks daily
-take probiotic tablets daily. They’re are expensive but seem to work

RAFHercules · 23/10/2021 23:45

Biological washing powder and highly scented shower gels set me off.

Bettybantz · 23/10/2021 23:48

Get the tablet, but also if GP won’t see you can you get to a GUM clinic? They might be able to sort you out

EmilyBennetWitch · 23/10/2021 23:54

I’m pretty sure it’s not BV because there’s no smell or discharge, literally just itchy, now sore and swollen and it’s the entire area now :( thanks for the help!
