I’ve got thrush. Never had it before, it’s fucking awful. To start with, it was just so itchy I wanted to cry. Now I’m using canisten and it burns. I literally had a panic attack tonight and had to wash it off. Is it supposed to hurt when I put the gel on? How do I get rid of the thrush if the cure feels like putting salt in a wound. Do I just need to man up and get on with it? Or does this sound like somethings not right? I called the doctor when it started because I’ve never had thrush so wasn’t sure this is what it is. But they won’t see me. Said to use over the counter medication, but what if it’s not thrush? How long do I wait, with my fanny burning off? Argh!

As per PPs, oral tablet only thing that ever works for me! Would just get that asap

BoredAndUnfulfilled · 24/10/2021 10:28

I used to suffer every single month with bouts of thrush. Changed to using FemFresh daily wash in the shower and switched pads from Always to Bodyform - not had an episode since.

justmaybenot · 24/10/2021 10:31

Put baking soda/bread soda in a warm (not very hot bath) and sit in it. Avoid sugar/yeast for a while. And get the OTC tables - while waiting for them, use a pessary

LakieLady · 24/10/2021 10:31

Lactobacillus acidophilus (from health food shop or larger branches of Boots) will help it clear more quickly, as will loose clothes and cotton knickers.

funkylittleboatrace · 24/10/2021 11:08

I agree with you @LakieLady, I take Lactobaillus Acidophilus every day . I use to suffer so badly with thrush , I haven’t had it in months!

LindyLou2020 · 24/10/2021 11:33

Apologies if anyone's already mentioned this, but thrush can also commonly occur during/after a course of antibiotics.
I get frequent UTI's, the only remedy that works for me is antibiotics.
So I always have a stock of Fluconazole, (the tablet for thrush) in!
As a PP has said, generic own brands are cheaper than Canestan, especially if bought online.

ThinWomansBrain · 24/10/2021 18:40

@Chocaholic9 - the lactulose looks interesting - I googled and it describes it as being for constipation - have I got the wrong thing?
NHS Lactulose

& which brand of probiotic would you reccomend?

BigYellowHat · 24/10/2021 18:42

I had it last week and only the pessary helped.

Medicaltextbook · 24/10/2021 19:00

I’m also affected but confused. Did not know what I had after looking my symptoms so spoke to nurse at walk in centre on the phone. She told me I have thrush, to buy Canestan cream and I asked for it at the pharmacy but I think I’ve got the wrong thing. Got it home. It says it will sooth but not treat. Do I need a prescription or something else? Thanks

GrandmasCat · 24/10/2021 19:05

For those who have mentioned they suffer from recurrent thrush, check yourselves (and your partners) for diabetes. Sometimes that may be behind the recurrent issue.

ThinWomansBrain · 24/10/2021 19:18

@Medicaltextbook
Canesten Combi

this is what my GP prescribed recently - it is available OTC, but my GP usually runs tests first. The pessary part of the combo is a really good start to kick off with.

Derrymum123 · 24/10/2021 20:28

I find the combi 2 creams(internal &external) works best for me. I get annoyed at the cost though. £13 a pop.I have seen fluclonazole tablets online at half the price of supermarkets and you can get 3 at once. Maybe get some in just in case. However, it means a wait for delivery, so I usually pay up to get rid quickly. Good luck, I feel sympathy for your pain. It really is horrible.

dottymac · 24/10/2021 20:35

Sorry to jump on with my own question but it is relevant and I can't find answers elsewhere. Recently I had a bubbling sensation down below 🤦 someone said it may be a yeast imbalance. It's gone now but was this thrush? It was the only symptom. What do I take if it comes back because fanny bubbles isn't nearly half as fun as it sounds 😩

VestaTilley · 24/10/2021 20:52

Are you sure it’s thrush? It shouldn’t burn in an agonizing way when you put the cream on. You only need a small amount, not loads.

Make sure you wear cotton knickers, not any with polyester or other man made fibres as they’re not breathable.

Get the Canestan capsule to take as well. It can take a week or two to get better.

Try not to wear tight fitting leggings, tights or jeans too often as they can make it worse. See a GP if it’s bad next week.

EmilyBennetWitch · 24/10/2021 21:36

@dottymac I’m getting the bubbling too! I thought it was something to do with the gel? I convinced myself it was worms at one point 😭

Thank you so much everyone for the help! I never realised this was such a common thing, and now I’m dreading it becoming a recurring thing?

I’ve been to the pharmacy and got the pessary, it says to use at night so waiting for bedtime

One time I got horrendous thrush, couldn't sleep with it. And it was my first herpes outbreak. Awful! But no big deal since. So if it doesn't clear do get your GP to take a look. Hope it clears up soon.

SpindelWhorl · 24/10/2021 21:50

Just to say thank you, useful thread.

PinkArt · 24/10/2021 22:00

A warning from my fanny to yours, the pessary took thrush from horrific itching to feeling like my bits were on fire. Never again! I've had much more success with the oral tablet - no sitting with an ice pack between my legs required.

OooohAhhhh · 24/10/2021 22:00

Pessary and the cream to soothe the outside.
It's the canesten combi.
It takes a few days to get better so I'd carry on with the treatment & cream for the outside.

I have re occurring thrush, and have had it since pregnancy (had it for around 3.5 years now). I used to get it really bad, around twice a week, now I get it around 2/3 times a month. I'm on a 6 month maintenance treatment (pessary every week) to try to get rid of it.
So yeah I feel your pain 😩

WonderfulYou · 24/10/2021 22:03

DO NOT scratch or rub it. It will make it worse and then it’ll definitely hurt/burn when you put the cream on.

I completely agree!

I’ve only had it a couple of times but have put sudocrem on which has managed to soothe it a bit until I can get proper stuff.

This thread has made me remember how awful it is and I might get some cheap stuff just incase.

MyMabel · 24/10/2021 22:05

The last time I had thrush I would day dream about vigorously using a dildo covered in sandpaper.

I feel for you.

WonderfulYou · 24/10/2021 22:05

What do I take if it comes back because fanny bubbles isn't nearly half as fun as it sounds

Sorry this made me smile Smile

I’ve never heard of bubbling before. Is there any pain with it?

dottymac · 24/10/2021 23:31

No pain - just feels like your fud is making bread 😂 it's like bubbles that periodically rise up the front. God, it's brutal to be a woman 🥴

NFLBingo · 24/10/2021 23:39

I have had recurring thrush since my first DD was born, bloody hormones, and had always used the pessariesa and cream combo.
However the most recent occurrence was especially bad and I needed something stronger from the doctor, when I explained what was going on he interestingly said to avoid using the cream for more than a few days as it can cause further irritation, and instead use sudocrem or bepanthen and treat it a bit like you would nappy rash.
I thought it was a bit weird but to be fair to him I used it and symptoms were gone within a few days and I’ve not had it since.
I’ll try the oral tablets and use that for the pain next time to see how it works.
