Hi everyone

Over 50 and still not eligible according to the NHS booking system for a booster jab. My issue is the press / govt are saying that over 50s are eligible to book now and they are campaigning to increase the so called ''slow uptake' - however Ive been trying to book a booster jab for the past few weeks as an eligible person but to no avail. I feel what is in the press and what the govt is espousing is not what is happening in reality. Can I ask what mumsnetters experiences are of this please? thanks

Did you have your 2nd dose >6m ago as per the criteria?
My mum had hers and flu jab together at the local GPs about a month ago. My dad is just coming upto 6m but hasn't heard anything yet.

MonkeyPuddle · 22/10/2021 19:19

Has it been six months since your second dose? Might be worth seeing if your GP surgery are running clinics.

You will be sent a text when you are eligble to book from 6 months after your second jab. Its not a blanket all over 50s can book now.
whatswithtodaytoday · 22/10/2021 19:21

It needs to be 6 months (and a week, I think) from your second jab. My 74 year old dad only just became eligible yesterday.

mynameiscalypso · 22/10/2021 19:22

My council have set up some hubs where you can book yourself a slot for a booster or just walk in and get one - you don't need to wait to be contacted. I agree it's been a shitshow though.

NotAnotherPushyMum · 22/10/2021 19:22

Go to a walk in clinic, our CCG has an update on their social media pages every day with the details of where they are. They’re asking for everyone eligible to go, not in any particular order.

Yiayoula · 22/10/2021 19:23

Apparently you don’t become eligible until 189 days after the date of your second jab, so that may be why the NHS website isn’t allowing you to book online yet.

DahliaMacNamara · 22/10/2021 19:24

My last check about an hour ago suggested you try to book online if you're over 50 and haven't been contacted 6 months and one week after your second jab. DH is waiting to book his. No doubt by then it will say something different.

bloodywhitecat · 22/10/2021 19:24

I am over 50 and had mine last weekend, I booked as soon as I got the text telling me I was eligible.

YukoandHiro · 22/10/2021 19:24

op is right. My parents are both post 6 months. They've tried online and on 119. It told them to call their GP. GP surgery says go back to 119. It's an endless loop

julieca · 22/10/2021 19:26

Walk-in clinics depend on where you live. Not everywhere has one nearby.
This is just like the initial ecv vaccination to me when everyone on here was saying everyone vulnerable had had at least one dose, and my DP was struggling to get it.

julieca · 22/10/2021 19:27

@bloodywhitecat

My DP is ecv and cant get one and over fifty. There seem to be massive regional variations.
VanGoghsDog · 22/10/2021 19:28

Most over 50's won't be post 6m until end Nov at the earliest, surely?

Mine isn't due til end Dec.

lljkk · 22/10/2021 19:29

Most people in England age 50-55 (my age band) should start hitting 6m starting late November, I think? Because govt was recommending 2nd dose after 8 weeks from mid May, and my age group started getting our 1st doses in mid March iirc.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 22/10/2021 19:29

Hi OP. Practice nurse here. Our surgery is actively calling those eligable and booking them in. Although over 50's are eligable, we need to make our way through the elderly and very vulnerable first. Its annoying its clearly being managed differently in different areas of the country.

scully29 · 22/10/2021 19:31

The government are only saying this stuff because they are putting the blame for the high numbers of covid on the people not getting the vaccine, rather than their lack of guidance (including their nonsense that friends don't need to wear masks!). They are continually full of lies. My Dad is in his 70s and just got his so I expect over 50s will be soon.

RB68 · 22/10/2021 19:32

53 and my 6 mths is up 1st Nov but I was pretty quick booking in. DH is 23rd Nov. We have hubs set up and was invited for flu 29th Oct so phoned GP re booster and she said lots of people fall into the not quite yet category - I can't decide get it all over with or go seperately.... I had a reaction to Jab 1 but not to 2 although sore arm - and usually get sore arm from flujab so am assuming will have two sore arms if go for both together.

JaninaDuszejko · 22/10/2021 19:32

6 months ago was April, the only person I know who had her second jab back then was my 85yo MIL, she's already had her booster. I'd only had my first jab then and there are walk in clinics in my town so in December when it's been 6 months since my second jab I'll go and get my booster.

rubydoobydoo · 22/10/2021 19:32

I'm not 59 yet (had my jabs through work) but got a text inviting me to book 6 months to the day after my first dose. I would have been able to get it at the local centre without the text, they didn't initially realise I had already booked and tried to book me another one!

rubydoobydoo · 22/10/2021 19:33

Should say I'm not 50! My 2nd jab was April 2nd.

happyinherts · 22/10/2021 19:33

Elderly friend (age 74) in Cambs had booster last week.

Neighbour (60s) Herts has booster arranged for Monday. Both contacted through GP and both exactly at the six month mark from Jab No 2.

RuthW · 22/10/2021 19:34

They are available but only if it's been more than 6 months. I should know as I've booked enough of them!

daisypond · 22/10/2021 19:34

It’s six months after the second dose. Over-50s aren’t ready yet generally. But we can go to a walk-in clinic as soon as the six months are done. No need to wait for a text or to book in.

TheFallenMadonna · 22/10/2021 19:35

It'll be the 6 month thing. I booked mine today. 50, and had my second jab in April.

TheFallenMadonna · 22/10/2021 19:35

I haven't had an invitation to book, just went to the booking website.
