To say mash is overrated?

I'm just not keen on mashed potatoes! DH doesn't like flavour and just likes it mashed into oblivion with a dollop of his fake butter spread, or cheese (depending on the meal, we generally just have cheesy mash with sausages and beans).

The best mash I've ever had was the garlic one at Toby Carvery, it was SO good but sadly I've still not managed to recreate it at home. Recently I've started cooking new potatoes just for myself when everyone else is having mash. They're so much nicer and I can actually chew them, unlike mash...

However, whenever I see a post about roast dinners on Facebook, a LOT of people say that mash is the best part of a roast dinner. How?!

AIBU to say mash is overrated?

Mash in a roast dinner? Madness. Roast potatoes surely?

Mash is nice as comfort food, with sausages and gravy.

Lime37 · 20/10/2021 22:44

Mash is the potato of the gods and bodger

KeeG8181 · 20/10/2021 22:44

It clags in my mouth and makes me gag if I eat too much of it, I'm with you OP!

Carolwithane · 20/10/2021 22:46

Not if made properly with lots of butter, a little milk and salt. Delicious Smile

WitchyNameChange · 20/10/2021 22:46

Hate mash. I only make it for the DC.

Everyone I know has mash as a roast dinner staple! Roast potatoes go on there too.

Mashed potato needs plenty of seasoning, masses of butter and some milk. Not a bit of fake spread. His type of mash sounds horrible. Really good mash is the food of gods. I would probably choose it as my last ever meal and die happy.

StrangeAddiction · 20/10/2021 22:46

No the wonder it's crap if you're using fake butter!
Lurpak, milk and salt and mash into perfection!
If a Sunday dinner doesn't have mash and yorkies the dinner is ruined!

Wisewordswouldhelp · 20/10/2021 22:47

Mashed potato must be done with plenty of real butter and salt, splash of milk and alot of mashing until lovely and smooth!

Mash is vile, weird texture and taste that doesn’t match. I’m not particularly keen on potatoes in general though much to my mothers horror. The only potato I like is chips if that counts as a potato or a roast potato as long as it’s is crispy and soaked in animal fat.

PersonaNonGarter · 20/10/2021 22:48

Mash is over. It’s so twentieth century.

ImUninsultable · 20/10/2021 22:49

We usually have parmentier potatoes or dauphinoise because that's the only 2 types of potatoes my kids will eat. So I never get to have mash. If they have dinner with their dad, which is very rare, I sometimes make myself a bowl of mashed potatoes with gravy and its amazing! Love them.

SickAndTiredAgain · 20/10/2021 22:49

I never used to like mashed potato as a child, it wasn’t until I grew up that I learnt that what my mum did (which was just mash boiled potatoes and serve them like that, nothing mixed in) was not considered a normal way to have them. No wonder I thought they were dry.
Now I’m still not a massive fan, but do like it sometimes.

AdaColeman · 20/10/2021 22:50

Mash has no place in a roast dinner.

It should be made with real butter or good olive oil, not fake butter spread. Have you tried colcannon OP, you might like that?

BurntO · 20/10/2021 22:50

Mash is amazing. Cook , drain, let steam for 10 mins and mix in butter, milk, garlic powder and mixed herbs and mash to death. Drool!!

BlueberrySugar · 20/10/2021 22:51

Yes, I hate it. Makes me gag thinking about it.

The people who put it on a roast are the same people who put sweet corn on their roast Grin.

TheBeesKnee · 20/10/2021 22:51

The way your husband makes it sound minging. I use butter, blue milk, and a dollop of crème fraiche roughly mixed in at the end. It's important not to overcook the potatoes!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 20/10/2021 22:51

Love mash. I used to make it with a massive dollop of Sour cream mixed in. delicious. Now I can't have that much dairy, it's salt, flora and a bit of soy milk. Works well.

BurntO · 20/10/2021 22:52

Wait, worth noting I wouldn’t ONLY have mash with a roast….I’d make at least two types of potato Grin

Kljnmw3459 · 20/10/2021 22:52

I don't mind mash but for some reason my DC hate it.

AnitaMani · 20/10/2021 22:54

YABU

Riced, not mashed, fuck tonne of unsalted butter, salt and white pepper.

I’m not sure if this is some kind of stealth boast Grin. Who the fuck could be bothered making parmentiers or daphinoise all the time, or do you just pick something ready made from Tesco? Anyway I wouldn’t pander to such posh pickiness.
Pleasedonteliminate · 20/10/2021 22:54

Put in a few scallions, bacon and cheese - now thats good mash

Youcancallmeval · 20/10/2021 22:54

If I wanted a day off school as a child I used to imagine eating it and would instantly vomit. Vile stuff.
